Hey, so my Uni is organizing a small Commons only tournament. the purpose of this is to get ppl interested in Magic etc. so anyway only Commons form T2 are allowed, and i was thinking of participating just for the fun of it.
So what do you guys think i should build?
i was thinking of the following
- mono-coloured
- abuses the god-auras (Sheild of oversoul, steel of godhead etc)
- packed with removal and efficient creatures
my initial idea was to go mono white because
- it has oblivion ring and unmake
- it has steel of godhead and shield of oversoul (best auras IMO)
I can't believe i forgot about red deck wins. looks like a solid plan and i may consider going with it. Just worries bout life gain critters like aven riftwatcher and pesky auras like shield orf oversoul.
a multi colour deck will be hard to pull of, imo, seeing as how i won't have access to filter lands.
oh and just found out that timeshifted cards are not allowed aswell

Puncture Blast can slow down Shielded creatures a bunch. The Steel might be tougher to combat the life gain, and you'll always have to do a 2 for 1 or more (like in Shard Volley's case), but you can deal with it.
Are you allowed to play cards in their common form? Or do they have to be common in the current set? For example, Mogg Fanatic is a common in Tempest, but an uncommon in Tenth. Just bring all common versions and they are Type 2 legal.
The U/R suite from Eventide would be nice to work off of. Their mimic is unblockable when triggered, Noggle Bandit is already unblockable. The u/r aura gives shroud and there's going to be NO mass removal (what can they do? Hurly Burly?). So it's either bounce the enchantment (which is fine because you get it back) or die a quick death. Bridgebreaker is slow, but you're only chance against mono green beef (Devoted Druid, Farhaven Elf, Llanowar Elf, Boreal Druid, etc. are all common and can accelerate into some very fast Scuzzback Marauder/Runes of the Deus beatings). My best tip for you would be to leave mana open for burn because as you suspect, these auras should play a big role since it's a current set (easy to get) and very effective. Actually, the G/U would be very effcient with their mimic (7/5 Trample, Flying Vigilance is a turn 5 kill), Slippery Bogle (3/3 Vigilance, shroud from opponent, flying is pretty good), Snakeform, and the aura. And that can fit all in Green OR Blue so you could splash any color to go along with it. Honestly I don't think anyone will bring black. He he, so bad lately. Their commons absolutely suck! Watch out for cards like Turn to Mist and such and only enchant ur dudes when you're pretty certain it can't be stopped.

What a coincidence. I'm the one organising it! 'Sup Shift-red, do I know you in real life? Zhen here.
You mean U/W (blUe/White) not B/W (Black/White). However BW aggro or control is actually a good idea. You do have access to some very cheap beats and the removal is even better with Tendrils of Corruption and Terror in your ranks. Also you have decent combat creatures that have wither. Plus Rite of Consumption is good as a form of "Black Burn"...actually Quill-Spike Combo is all Common...
Ooh, this is exciting. I wish my uni's Magic Club held pauper tournies
Anyway, I'm part of a community that plays with only commons on Magic Online. It's called Pauper Deck Challenge (or PDC for short), and there are tournaments running throughout the week for LRW/SHM block, Standard, Classic and October 08 Extended.
If I'm allowed to link you to it, here it is; PDCMagic
The community is very competitive. If you want some ideas for decks, visiting that site and browsing winning decklists is usually good.
In standard, the current metagame looks like;
"Grimdrifter" (B/u Control based on the infinite card advantage engine that is Grim Harvest and Mulldrifter) "Storm Control" (U/r Control that typically finishes with massive empty the warrens storms/Errant Ephemeron) "White Weenie" (Self explanatory. 36 creature.dek. Completely mindless.) "Dominus Deck Wins" (Red deck wins, using the eventide U/R creatures with Clout of the Dominus.) "Dark Evocation" (An aggro-control deck similar to grimdrifter in the sense that it uses harvest with CIP creatures. In addition to this, it uses Momentary Blink because it also happens to be ridiculous.)
I believe that's it. There are other Harvest variants, other U/r Control variants, and G/b rock type decks using Aurochs Herd. What I listed above is what I believe to be top-tier. My personal favourite is Storm Control.
If you're wondering why Teachings and UW control don't work, it's because of White Weenie and Storm Control. They can't handle ridiculous amounts of creatures, and Empty the Warrens shuts down counterspell-based plans. Festercreep is sub-par maindeck because it is blank against the control mirror, and hard to resolve against storm. UW has zero ways to beat swarms aside from racing.
If you're wondering why dedicated discard doesn't work, it's because of Grimdrifter and Dark Evocation. The Grim Harvest+Evoked Mulldrifter loop is WAY too much for discard to handle.
Pretty much, in order to be competitive in this format, you need to either play Grim Harvest or have a solid plan against it.
Anyway, good luck with your tourney!

GB Elves <-man I hate this deck, it has a 50/50 matchup against Tier 1/2 but loses to jank aggro most of the time. UB Faeries <-only reason it's good is because of all those people that's still playing 5CC. WB Tokens <-so boring, there's only 2 ways to play this deck. RB Blightning <-Autopilotting you to victory 0-2 drop.
???B Super Secret Tech <-dude, this thing is nuts! 90/10 against all matchups.
I've been wanting to do this for a while now, since my friends generally do pauper only, or on the rare occasion have the odd junk rare lying around that we pop in, but I used a BW pauper deck my friend built, and it was powerful - Nightsky Mimic became the most hated card there for a while, especially when I would drop an Edge on him, then send him over and Unmake their only potential blocker. 7, face. Made me wish I had a Deathbringer Liege in there :D. His specific build I don't recall, but it was mostly BW hybrid with some pure black and pure white (Terror and O-Ring). Badass removal suite (Unmake, Terror, O-Ring, all 4-of), it was hawt.

EDIT: Tattermunge Duo is a pretty strong 3 drop for mono red, especially with Flame Jab.

I have some EDH cards and rare Magic basic lands (APAC, EURO, ARENA, etc) so message me if you're looking.

Gone (of Dead // Gone) can handle Auras like the Shield, if it should come into play while you can't burn away the creature in response.
