Tried to search for this deck but couldn't find it. A Imperial Painter deck just finished 2nd in a 49 player event in Hadley, Mass. The deck is beginning to see some play in many different metas and would probably be played more if it was not for the expensive co$t of Imperial Recruiter
I have tested this version (-1 Imperial Recruiter, +1 Magus of the Moon) and is very satisfied with the results, I will probably use this deck in legacy nationals. Not sure about the sideboard yet but think it will be something like this
I consider this deck to be very, very significant. And I think Atogatog has it right that the biggest thing holding it back is going to be the availability of cards. Remember that in Vintage, they are all scrambling for recruiters as well. We really need to discuss it. Does anyone have any practical experience with it to share?
I agree... Hell, I'd probably play it if Recruiters weren't $80 1/1s that only worked in a couple of decks
Atogatog, why did you cut a Recruiter? Budget issue?
If not, I think I'd cut 1 Jaya first. She's only good once you have a Painter in play and hard to cast turn 1 anyway because of the 1RR cost... so you can tutor her up when you need her. Besides, I'd want 4 Magus to be able to cast it t1 more.
Budget issue.. well not excactly, but close. Just couldn't find one. Have searched this site, motl and alot of cardshops online but it is not easy to find the last one. When I do my list is going +1 Imperial Recruiter, -1 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage. Can't wait to play this in a big tournament, unfortunatly they come very rare at my place. Playtesting is going well.

Alfiriel: True, but it is still a different deck and not Imperial Painter.
I am playtesting this alot and just had a very nice opening hand: Painter's Servant, Grindstone, Chrome Mox, Active Volcano, City of Traitors, Simian Spirit Guide and Red Elemental Blast.
Turn 1 Me: City of Traitors, Tap City, Painter's Servant, Chrome Mox (remove Active Volcano)
Turn 1 Him: Karakas, Tap Karakas, Æther Vial
Turn 2 Me: Draw Ancient Tomb (not that it matters), Tap Mox, Grindstone, Tap City, Remove SSG, Activate Grindstone. Win (with Ancient Tomb and REB still in hand).
Was very cool to see how the optimal hand works. And after about 20 games with this deck I feel that muligan is very important in some situations, this deck is not very consistent so it helps to get the right cards in the opening hand. Turn 1 Painter's Servant with SSG / Mox and REB / Pyroblast / Active Volcano in hand is good. So is turn 1 Magus of the Moon. Just my 2 cents.

Playing against any other deck, I think the right play is to tap the city, then play the Ancient Tomb, tap it and use that 4 mana to play and activate Grindstone so that you have Red Elemental Blast mana. Then again, you were playing against a tapped out Death & Taxes player, so he probably didn't have any tricks, but still, it's better to be on the safe side, no?

Why wouldn't you play a build that had a search mechanism for the other part of the combo, such as Enlightened Tutor, blue cantrips, etc.? The deck is more than a little weak without the combo.
Also, you seem to pack it to Goblins hardcore. You're slower than them, your mana base seems fragile, Blood Moon doesn't do ****, and you have no answer to Incinerator.
(M:tG) It's a hobby which costs money. You can't play golf without the right clubs and a membership for the golf court, you can't play paintball with a cardboard armor and a sling, you can't go to the movies without paying for a ticket and you can't play Magic without owning the cards. Simple as that.
Should we have two threads, then? I think the blue version still warrants discussion outside of DC.
I think so. This is after all Imperial Painter. I think blue based painter decks (i.e. Trinket Painter) have also proven themself to be competive. It's better to have two threads since the decks are totally different and the only cards it have in common are Painter's Servant and Grindstone.
Deck-topic; vs mono-colored-decks. Still winning against D&T even tough they have Swords, Mangara and True Believer before SB. I side in 3 Farie Macabre each time in response to him siding in Gaea's Blessing and it works great. Suicide / MBA is easy, just get out a Painter quick before he's discarded. Against gobbos I'm having more trouble but will probably find out about that matchup later on.

Faerie Macabre will only buy you a turn tho, isn't that a bit risky?
Besides, it's a very narrow card. I'd rather use Tormod's crypt (which should be in your side as all-around GY hate anyway) to remove the whole 'yard in response, to deal with Blessings.
The only upside of Faerie Macabre is that it's fetchable with Recruiters but you should probably save them to fetch Painters against decks packing a lot of removal, don't you think?
True, but in this matchup I like it. I have 3xFarie Macabre and 4xTormod's Crypt in the SB. Against D&T I use Faerie because he can be fetched with Recruiter, and can not be countered or disenchanted. But in different matchups like Ichorid, Treshold etc. Tormod's Crypt is my weapon of choice.

Are you sure your sideboard plans are clear?
If you play against Disenchants/Krosan Grips just don't drop your Crypt until you want to use it, and don't pass priority before activating it. So disenchants are really not a problem; and counters are handled by your REBs.
It's hard to drop a crypt in responce to gaea's blessing
Are you sure your sideboard plans are clear?
I really think it takes up slots that could be used for combo or aggro hate, for example... (Trini+Jitte ?)
Maybe as a fetchable 1-of, but multiples are really overkill.
I agree, I guess SB will improve after more games and some tournaments.

point taken loop on gamble vs. imperial reqcuiter but im looking on the practically of the card preference. the reason why we dont see much of these decks well it simply because not everyone has or can afford imperial recruiter. so i've thought of gamble as an alternative but not necesarily a perfect for imperial recruiter (hell i had recuiters of my own id play this deck instead!)
so now against SB i think the trouble here is getting painter in the board. He resolves we have no problem. getting him in board is the challenge and i think tormod's crypt is way better than faerie macabre.

Trinket Painter (I like to call it Paint the Town Red) does deserve it's own thread. I posted one in developing competitive, but it's my untested build, and I'm just starting to get more serious about Legacy after being a very casual player for a long time.
I find it very, very weird that people are discussing wether to include Char-Rumbler, Dragon Whelp and Furnace Whelp in this deck. Gamble makes sense- find the peices without spending the $/time on getting Imperial Recruiters. But then it isn't Imperial Painter anymore, it's, um, Gambling Painter?
Sword of Light and Shadow is an interesting suggestion that either a blue-based or red-based Painter/Stone combo deck could make use of. Doesn't fall off from the protection like Sword of Fire and Ice would, gets back dead painters, gains life, protects from nasty stuff like Vindicate and, ironically, Swords to Plowshares, and turns Imperial Recruiter, Trinket Mage or Painter's Servant itself into some serious beats.
Whenever I get a chance to test Paint the Town Red, I'll almost certainly be running Sword of Light and Shadow (and Tormod's Crypt) in the sideboard. Thanks for the good ideas!

The interesting thing about us legacy players is that we consider Force of Will, Dark Ritual, Blood Moon, Tarmogoyf and Swords to Plowshare to be fair.
i owned this deck hard with a cruddy sliver deck. of course i just swords to plowshares the painter every time for the win
sure you can like everyone else with krosan grip on their hands right?
i've already got a deck less the imperial recruiter and have substituted it for gamble and the deck plays very well.
obviously you dont want to play the painter when you dont have enough mana to combo out (4 mana to cast and activate the grindstone) or to protect it (red elemental blast, pyroblast with simian spirit guide or an open red mana in play) right?
so the swords is really hmm... meh.
i was thinking of replacing the blood moon for main decked trinisphere. or we could have half of the magus of the moon and blood moon to make space for 4 trinispheres in the deck. it could be very hard for us to work out the situation early but as soon as we are ready to go for the kill we can cast pyroblast/REB at EOT and combo out on our turn.

Furnace Whelp maybe? He have 1 less touhgness but he dont have that little 4 pump max restriction.
Great thx to Zaphod from HighLight studio for this GREAT banner.
If you fail your promise Shinjutsei, i will send ninja on you!!
2 is way more vunerable than 3. And how many times do you have 4 red mana?
why sword of light and shadow? wouldn't sword of fire and ice give protection with a painter out?
