I'm debating whether or not to spend my money on the real product from my nearest store and play there when I'm able or they're having a tournament, or here, online.
I would say online since you can play anything you want and the cards are generally around half the price of paper versions. Also you can redeem them once you get a complete set if you decide you want some paper cards to play with for casual or something.

This question IMO seems to always hinge on 1) How easy is it for you to get to the LGS, 2) How progressive is the LGS on running tournaments et.
I can't even commit to making the pre-release this weekend, and regular friday nights from 7-> whenever doesn't work for me.
I prefer Paper, but my circumstances dictate I play online.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Depends if you want to a limited amount every week, bi-weekly, month, etc. Goto MTGOTraders.Com and look up the cards there to see the difference. I personally play for free.

This is a great answer. If you have a LGS close by that is nice and has a good group of guys I think playing in person is much more fun if you have to pick one. MTGO will however make you a much better player faster and is cheaper.

For your consideration, having a real Jace, the Mind Sculptor will always be worth more than having a digital one. Look at any of the Alpha/Beta cards. Those all have appreciated in value. A digital card is just a digital card. But I will concede that Magic Online is great for drafting at any time (and provides the hope of redeeming a paper set).

Actually that was not true until 2 weeks ago. Jace was much higher online for a few months even.

I love to play paper, but my playgroup doesn't gather often enough (I'm the only one that's really about Magic :embarrass:) and let's not get started on me going to a LGS.
Online, I get to play almost every day, at any time I want, and I have decks that would devastate my casual IRL playgroup, but online I get to choose whether to play a rather broken deck, or a goofy one, and I can win or lose with both. I guess I'm more on the Online camp.
A paper card can lose value due to being played, digital cards will always keep their quality. You have to take good care of your paper cards for them to keep their value.
i just proxy my jaces, i dont need to use them until it's tourney time, they would be used limitedly...i cant justify myself having a "digital" jace, it just sounds silly to me

winning isnt everything, it's the only thing
Caw-Blade by Me!

Finished: 2nd Place
I play both online and off, I own a UB control deck with Mind sculptors in it in RL, and have the same deck online as well, as well as Caw Go online, but not in RL.
What I like about playing online is the fact I can play as much as I want, as often as I want.
I can't make FNM because I work nights, so FNM is out for me. I can however go on sat/sun, but they often don't have people playing in RL on those days unless there is a tourney, so that's a wash too.
When I DO play in RL, I have a competitive deck, but if I want to make another deck using Mind Sculptors, I have to resleeve them into the other deck, which is annoying. (i really should get matching sleeves for everything).
But that's one good thing about playing online, you don't have to sleeve decks, and all that time you spend sleeveing decks you want to make changes to or whatnot, is non existent online.
It's also easy as hell to get any card you want online, nearly instantly. I use Cardbot and MTGOTraders bot, I bought the vast majority of my cards off Cardbot, but lately i've been using MTGOTraders bot and bought 4 Mind Sculptors off it. I have no problem going with an established name. Cardbot has also been around a very long time, and they are reputable and reliable. Other than that, I have no desire to do business with any other bots.
Trading online is harder than it is in RL, it's sometimes hard to find trade partners, and when you do, they can be a little unreasonable, depending on the person.
Another thing is, you make a lot of friends online, and you can play your junk decks and competitive decks against each other, and have a lot of fun. You can also join clans, or form your own and start your own playgroup.
I guess overall, I'd say my MTGO experience has been the better experience for me considering i've played a lot more online than I can in RL because of the aforementioned limits (unfortunate . . .)
I'll say this, a lot of people who play online in the Casual Decks room aren't all that rich and they often don't spend big on their decks, now there ARE exceptions, but it's generally a really fun place to play where even if you use junk decks, they will stand a chance of winning against others.
If you play really expensive decks, you'll wanna join the Tourney Rooms, either tourney Practice room or, queue yourself for tourneys, which are going on 24/7.
that's right, 24/7, you can do DRAFTs, Standard Constructed, Extended, or block constructed, all online, 24/7!
Ok, well I wrote a whole novel, sorry, if you've read this far, if you take anything away from what I said, then I hope you realize it really boils down to a personal choice. You can do both, if you have money, you can build a competitive deck in both, ONLY spend on a hardcore competitive deck online if you plan on joining tourneys, otherwise, don't really bother, cause while you'll win games, it's really unsatisfying to play others in Casual Decks when you know they stand no chance against your deck that cost $500-$600. Save those kind of decks for RL, only do that online if you plan on participating in TOURNEYS.
Also, it's cheaper, a LOT cheaper, to buy cards online, you can check the mtgotraders site for prices, OR, Cardbotmtgo.com, which is what I use, regardless of what bot I use, I use Cardbotmtgo.com to look up prices faster, bookmark that site and use it to look up prices faster, even if you don't plan on using their bot, that's just a quick, painless price guide that includes a running total of whatever you're selecting will cost you.
I just recently made the jump to online. The cards are great (afterall, they're Magic), and so is playing with them. Prices are wonderful, as is availability. It's almost too available. Like, so available you'll overspend easily. Or in my case, as long as I went without playing, so available that it's over-whelming and I'm not even sure what to look for.
I think the concept of "investing" in cards and that these cards don't appreciate in value like paper ones is broken. These cards do appreciate in value, just the same. But they don't appreciate as much because generally, they're not as expensive to start with.
What isn't great is the client. People talk about how bad it is, and honestly, I thought they were exaggerating a little. It sucks. Badly. I messed around with version 1 when it released, and that was much better than this. The trading area is a bad joke, and the settings are locked down so badly that you can't even resize the window. So when it wrongly auto-detects my screen size settings and puts the window at a size so that it is under my task bar, the only way to fix it is to move my task bar to the side, which I hate. So I change my layout around to play MTGO, and change it back when I'm done. Really irks me. The cards look hideous. They aren't even trying to make them look right.
WotC knows quite a bit about developing card games - I just wish they could admit they need help with computer software.
Magic Online is a great way to play magic, especially competitively. You can play at whatever hour you want, whatever format you want, and the cards are almost universally cheaper. (Notable exception, Jace the Wallet Sculptor.) You can get "real" rewards, exchange stuff, engage in trading, etc etc.
Unfortunately, you're still playing online with people you don't know and will probably never see again. If you're like me, Magic is an excuse to spend time with friends. I enjoy sitting down at the table, cracking jokes, and interacting with the other person. MODO is more like...Starcraft. Yeah, you're sort of playing with other people. Sort of.
But it's not the same. So if you have friends you like playing Magic with? MODO is mostly a waste, unless you're really serious about playing competitively.
Just my $0.02
Edit: Oh yeah, the learning curve for handling all of the triggered "may" abilities and things is hideously frustrating, and even very experienced players will lose simply because they accidentally clicked the wrong thing. Even LSV complains about that, and he's MODO's poster child.

Correct me if I am wrong, cause I am just learning about magic online...but...
Paper magic = tournaments like SCG and TCG Player = cash payouts, plus you have grand prix, and pro tours.
Online magic - you earn tix, and packs. No grand prix, no pro tours, no 5k tournaments
Right or wrong?
Tickets = Cash, you can just cash out and sell the tickets.
No Online dont have GP's or PT's, you can however qualify for the PT via a magic online PTQ.
Myself i rarely get to play with my paper cards anymore as when i go to tournaments i usually judge them... so MTGO is my chance to actually PLAY some magic
I'm confused... People are mentioning MTGO cards are so much cheaer than paper cards;however, a quick comparison between Cardbotmtgo.com and Trollandtoad.com yields little difference at all...

Am I missing something here? 1 ticket = $1 correct?
Youre not missing anything, except one those prices for online seem a tad high and can most certianly be gotten cheaper. Also cards are cheaper on a whole, but alot of big names cards like Titans and Jace will be about the same.
The cheaper cards come from cards that arent staples as alot of times you can get a $3-4 card for 50 cents online.
What you have to realize is heavily sought after rare cards will maintain most of their value. Cards that are not in tons of decks are less sought after and when your online there are TONS of places all trying to sell them at once. Of you have a huge supply and low demand.
