It doesn't seem to look like Threaten since she's about to kill someone on her side.
See, that leads me to believe that it is Threaten, or something similar. Red gaining control of a creature until end of turn then making them attack their own side.
On the first art:
It is not fallen angel. The focus is on the action, not the creature. Maybe fallen ideal, but the crown in the old fallen angel art (and the fallen ideal art) has such an established look, and the crown in this art looks nothing like that crown. As has been said many times before, this art just screams red. I could see a threaten style effect, but to me it looks like the angel is specifically killing another creature. Maybe something that makes an opponent's creature deal damage equal to its power to another creature that player controls? Either way, I'm guessing it's a new card.
On the second art:
Do any of you know anything about what a sphinx is actually supposed to be? Magic arts have depicted sphinxes oddly for so long, maybe you've all forgotten, but this is much more like what a sphinx should really look like. Also, to those who say it looks like the little dude is somehow consulting the sphinx, read any story with a sphinx in it. Sphinxes don't give advice, they ask riddles... and then kill you if you don't get it right. I'm also guessing new card. Most likely a creature, but if it's a non-creature spell, I'm calling it "sphinx's riddle" or something similar. Regardless, I absolutely love this art. The perspective may not be perfect, but that's clearly very intentional, and if anything, it only serves to make her look more sphinxlike.

I don't have any idea on what card either of these arts are for. They could very well be new cards.
I really like the sphinx. It's sort of like Maxfield Parrish meets that guy who did the Lord of the Rings movie in the late '70 (Bashko? Bakio? Bachio?). It's almost psychedelic and really unsettling. Completely awesome!

ralph bakshi is who you are referring to!
I like both of these arts. The 'fallen angel' or 'threaten' really reminds me of the old days of magic art. circa Ice Age.
I am excited to draft M10, it seems like it will a riot.
Fallen Angel for the 1st art maybe? Although it does look more like a spell than a creature... Oh well, I would love to see Fallen Angel again!
Oh, and the art on the Sphinx is horrendous... Perception is totally off, it almost looks as if the sphinx was shopped onto the background. Hideous at best. Almost as bad as the hydra art in the other thread..

Currently playing: EDH: Whatever 99 BWG cards I feel like playing from my cube.
Traditionally there would be some defining feature of black in it, like dead wings, extra black colors, or no wings.
My vote goes with the Threaten effect crowd. To be honest, I thought Slave of Bolas although it's probably not that. The thing on top of her head is more like some kind of mind control or something. It wouldn't make sense to be some buff like Unholy Strength because it would be more fitting for a darker creature instead of an angel. Also, it looks like the two might have been on the same side at one point because there's nothing to show that the screwed guy is evil or anything. Some may argue it's something like Maniacal Rage, but why pick an angel for the artwork?
All in all, I'm expecting it to be a sorcery, instant, or possibly an enchantment aura. Basically, it has to be something about betrayal.
(And I'm not saying it IS threaten, because how do you threaten an angel? But we do know that angels are controllable because of Slave of Bolas. Hell, compare the artwork between the two. The new one just has more action involved.)

Started playing since Invasion, stopped at Scourge. Returned briefly during BoK's introduction of ninjas. Finally back into magic during Shadowmoor/Eventide.
Currently Running Bant Control and a homebrew Blightning Echoes for Type 2.
I cannot see the Angel art being a Threaten-like spell, because whatever is threatening the angel into being evil, somehow also gave the angel the dark crown and glowing eyes, and whoever is controlling it isn't even present in the picture. Like the original art, I'd expect the person(s) threatening the victim to actually be present. I would also expect the background to be more in line with the soldier she's beating than the bloody palette selected (If the background were blue or white for example, she'd stick out showing something isn't right, for example).
Judging by the the glow, she's either been possessed by an evil force or she's just evil to begin with. The guy has clearly been beaten, he looks worn down and like he's struggling to get away - just look at his posture. The angle of his legs suggest he's nearly crawling.
While she wouldn't be the typical Fallen Angel what with lacking the black wings, the art tries too hard to make her look evil for it to be used on something like Threaten, IMO. I would have to doubt it's any form of control Magic, because while red might cause rage, she's clearly being driven by magic or has been possessed. The only other color possibility would be blue and blue wouldn't have an effect like that on a creature. Black doesn't do control Magic.
I agree. I don't think this is bad art, but I think it would be bad art for Fallen Angel. It does look a lot like a sorcery, instant, or aura.
The crown on her head is also not the same crown in Fallen Ideal, so why would they add a crown to go back to the original flavor of Fallen Angel, while not using the original crown? That would be like printing a legendary creature who already has an established look with a completely different look, like reprinting Ascendant Evincar (aka. Crovax) as a woman.
I'd say it looks possible at least to me that the Sphinx could be a Serra Sphinx off shoot. I know that would put two serra's in the set but its always a possibility but until we get all the info on this one its all just a guessing game.

Just for the record, I do believe the plural of Sphinx is Sphinx, not Sphinxes or Sphinxen or whatever the hell our dumb human minds can thing of.
Nope, it's definately sphinxes (sometimes sphinges apparently). Thank you google! Anyway, I thought the first one was fallen angel at first, but now i'm pretty sure it's a new card. The second one, well, it's unique, I can give it that. No idea what that will be.

There's something about a homemade avvy that makes you feel proud no matter how much it sucks.
It would be funny then if this turned out to be Ritual of the Machine.;) I don't think it is, but there have been control cards in black. It's just doesn't go along with what they would want to do with a Core set. But as others have said, because of the background it does look more like a Red card. I just think it will be Threaten.

That's the best guess I've seen for the Sphinx.:p Both cards will probably end up being new, but until we know for sure, it's fun to guess.
I believe the former is Fallen Angel - and it's not a crown, it's a burning halo. Still looks dumb as hell, but I think that marks her as damned. That, and I think she is "sacrificing" some dude for a power boost.
And the Sphinx... Jesus, my eyes hurt, that's just ****ing awful, everything is so... weird... I don't even know where to start.

I for one welcome our new Sphinx overlor...lady, overlady.
It's unique, and seems to be the fruit of creativity. I approve. Besides, they made a Lordly sort of thing for another less beloved tribe already, didn't they? Maybe this strange blue cat-woman-bird-thing's ample cleavage shall fuel an unstoppable onslaught of like-minded cat-woman-bird-things. Might even give them flying, eh?

Ah, it all makes sense now. THIS is where they got the idea of Soaring Hope!
Actually, upon closer inspection of the "crown", I realise it looks more like a halo with protrusions occuring upwards from it. So perhaps the main focus might not be on the halo/crown but should be more on the red eyes. Just throwing this out.

There's somthing wrong with that angel. Yeah looks like she's under the influence of a red spell. I wish they wouldn't draw angels as the victims of spells so regularly. I would expect angels from a vorthos point of view to be too powerfull to be affected by many spells.

I like both peices of art. Espeshally the Sphinx. She isn't butt ugly. Her tits are not lopsided. Her forleg is clearly in front of her left breast. She looks like an African Princess, she's beautyful.
Clearly, some of you have no taste. Or are blind. Or both.
I think the angel card is new. To me it looks like it's more then one colour. Red for sure, but possibly black or white. I think's it's too early to discount the posibility of a smidgeon gold and/or hybrid cards in this set.
