is it just me or does the Worldwake Symbol looks similar to the Symbol on this "Demon" Face?
Noticed this too, but I couldn't make anything significant of a demon with a Worldwake spoiler on his forehead, so I didn't comment.
Maybe this is consistent with previous blocks in that the "middle set" tends to be darker and more destructive than the first set, e.g. Torment, Darksteel, Conflux.
once again the demons unite the lands? or is that planeswalker one of the original inhabitants coming back to heal the world WITH LEECHES & DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!

i must say the artwork's looking mighty sharp so far. even the pack designs look real good!
I think MtG fans have been saying this with every set release for at least the past five years -- pretty much since Ravnica block. WotC just continues to raise the bar with each subsequent set.
I do find it somewhat funny too, since there was such a backlash from long established players over the changes the game started going through about ten years ago with less art showing up from long-time MtG illustrators. Last night I was sorting my box of Alt-4th and couldn't stop thinking, "Good Lord, the artwork for 90% of these cards back then was absolutely terrible!"
Yeah, it looks to me like he is either trapped or being created by one of those trees in the forest art.
Yay my first post on the MTGS forums
yay for you
on topic sweet packs!!!!!!!!!!
though i have to agree with what others have said U and W aren't getting any love on these packs though maybe it because the PW are all multi colored chandra being RW Nissa we know is GB and heres hoping (as i have stated many times before) our favorite vampire is UB
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.

I will agree with you that many illustrators are better today however ten years ago there was a great variety of illustrations represented. From Phil Foglio, Amy Weber, Drew Tucker. Now days the lose of that variety makes many of the illustrations blend together and they become bland. Also back during the 90's the process of taking an illustration and putting it on cardboard was not as refined, causing many of the illustrations to lose detail.

Bland? They blend together and look like they come from a well established world. It's using the artwork to put flavor to an abstract setting.
The speculation on this thread is full of moments.
We have known the following for weeks, and in some cases, months:
-There are only three planeswalkers in ZEN.
-Nissa is in ZEN.
-There is a returning planeswalker in ZEN.
-Chandra (Flamedancer) is in ZEN.
-Sorin is a planeswalker, and in ZEN.
Vol was never mentioned AT ALL until someone squinted their eyes and decided that art was the Dragonman.
We don't know a good majority of the styleguide and setting of Zendikar. To make any assumptions about why a character looks 'similar' to an existing one, is just silly.
Vol looked like most of the inhabitants of Jund, anyway. Red creatures and races look similar usually.
Nothing big.

I think if they were going to put vol in this set they would not have picked such a crazy picture for him on the pack. look at the other packs. I know i know i know chandra looks crazy but not like a lunatic like this guy with the makeup. I really hope that they give U and W some love and stop with the whole multi color thing.
Probably already pointed out, but the demon looking art has the worldwake symbol on his forehead. Maybe pointing to what may happen in the sets to come?
Either way, the art for sets has become increasingly well done. I can only anticipate how good the rest of the set's art will be.

Can we add to the first post in huge letters that 1.The guy isn't Vol and 2. That the demon does in fact have the worldwake symbol it's head?
These are the two prime conversational strands in this thread and they haven't evolved at all. I went through all 6 pages so far and there are several instances of the same original comment regarding both. I'd like to move on to implications of the worldwake symbol, etc. rather than people stacking "did you notice...?" on top of other people who already said that.
So anyway, storyline people who know more about Zendikar as a plane, etc. implications?
These definitely all look like walkers. Chandra, obviously, Nissa, obviously, our new vampire-looking guy, because he was spoiled as a walker (unless some other card type has loyalty, doubtful). The guy with roid rage looks like sarkhan, has the same clothing as sarkhan, and might look a little darker thanks to his time under Bolas. Also, maybe I'm completely wrong, but when I saw the last demon boy, I thought of garruk. He's posed like garruk, and garruk has that curse on him from vess. What if he looks like that in worldwake (the symbol on his forehead)?
Of course, there are only three walkers in zen, but that doesn't mean others can't appear on different cardtypes. See Banefire , that promo form of the dragon, all those new art jace v. chandra cards, etc.
Note: Two full moons behind this dude. And he is DEFINITELY a vamp.

Actually that one did look like Vol to me. I saw his face before he said Vol and went "Omg, Sarkhan?!"
I agree that wizards is doing a better job a bringing the sets together thematically. That still does not give a greater variety of interpertations of that set. The purpose of an illustration is to tell a story, sometimes that story can be better told through a variety of methods. Photo-realism in John Avons lands (Forest) would be more dynamic if they were off set by Drew Tuckers lands (Plateau). Each bring strong elements that enhance the magic experience. One gives the viewer a finite view and interpetation of the world. The other is open ended giving the viewer more control of the piece.

That's ALSO a Steve Argyle piece. He's entitled it "Vampire Lacerator".
