However I look at it, a MSRP of 75$ is terrible. Either the cards won't be reall worth it, in which case it might actually sells for around MSRP, but it won't interest me in the slightest, or it will contain cards that makes it worthwhile, meaning it will be sold for 200$. In either case, we lose. I wish they'd stick with the previous prices. The first batch of commander decks were nice, contained enough goodies for teh price and were purchasable for a reasonable price in a lot of places initially. For while, a LGS around here was even selling the WUR one for less than MSRP (around 25$)!
Agreed. I also think they could have done this as a 5 color deck with the foils thrown in as a bonus. It would have felt like it could be worth $75 or you wouldn't have minded paying the $150+ if it contained good cards. As it is, it will either flop or sell for double (or more) of the MSRP.

And if it sells for double MSRP it ends up being a flop also, because it means that the product didn't make it directly into the hands of the Consumer as the Manufacturer intended.

Has there been any confirmation as to the distribution of these? I wonder if walmart and targets will carry these, if they do i bet they will be quickly plundered as in my area i routinely see fatpacks busted open on shelves with no packs and graveborn decks with no entombs.

This has yet to be confirmed. The big question is whether or not big-box stores will put these up on shelves at all because of the expensive MSRP.
Derp acknowledged. Clearly, I don't play enough EDH. Now that I know, I question the point of the oversized cards at all.

Just toss a slip of paper in front of a land and call it Azuza or whatever you end up using. There's no point in letting something like that go to waste. "What you're supposed to do" only extends as far as to what you and your playgroup agree on.

Keep in mind, it comes out at the height of Christmas Shopping season.
I doubt Wal-Mart or Target would have any trouble selling these, $75 or not.
The bigger question is, would they be willing to risk putting such an easily shoplifted item on their shelves?
If they can keep them in a locked case, I could definitely see them being sold there.

I think your second point is really what people are referring to. Even if the consumer who actually wants the cards isn't unscrupulous enough to shoplift, I'm sure there will be plenty of people willing to steal these to resell.
Also, as is often pointed out, Walmart doesn't stock those card displays themselves, an outside contractor comes in to do it. I don't know whether Walmart would care to go to the extent to coordinate a locked case with an independent supplier.
Pretty awesome that there's going to be a foil Sylvan Library finally, but I'm slightly disheartened that they apparantely didn't even try to solve the rules nightmare that the card is.
Whether or not I buy this set will be completely predicated on what it contains. Foil Azusa and Mimeoplasm is a good start, but there are still 15 cards left to reveal. I don't get a crap about sleeves, life counters, or especially oversized foils.
That foil Sylvan Library will be mine, though. Need it for the Omnath deck that's slowly being foiled out.
Realistically, I was only ever excited about the regular-sized cards, anyway. Everything else is fluff. I've pre-ordered at the LGS, which at the very most will charge $75. If it winds up sucking (and I feel it won't), I can always cancel my pre-order.

There are 24 cards left to reveal. Azusa is (presumably) oversized-only, while the regular cards spoiled thus far are Command Tower, Mimeoplasm, and Sylvan Library (well, CT hasn't been officially spoiled, but come on).

I'm not sure if you're correct on this point, but it does bring up an interesting question: we don't actually know yet if the cards that are being printed as oversized foils are also being printed as normal sized foils. I assumed that they were, myself, but you seem to have a different perspective on the matter. If so, then there are 18 cards, 10 being printed a second time in oversized format. If not, there are 28 cards total (18 normal sized, 10 oversized with no overlap).

If this set is printed in limited enough quantity to not mess with market values for the singles in it, it'll sell for far more than $75.
If this set is printed in high enough quantity to lower market values for the singles in it, it won't be worth $75.
Kind of a double edged sword.
I think the smart way to go with this would have been make it $35 and print a ton of them.

Well, there's different numbering which would suggest that they are actually independent of one another, but really, your guess is as good as mine. It's definitely possible, but holy crap would that be incredibly lazy.
I Appreciate all of my customers i do my best to make that clear to them, i give them discounts on all kinds of things but that is still all based off of market value of a particular item at any given time and i will be giving them as much of a break that makes sense for the item when an actual value is set by the community, but i see no reason to set it to msrp. It is never as simple as just one line of thought its not just about losing money, and its not just about the value of my customers it is about finding as good of a middle ground as i can. Part of the problem is that i can't even give complete customer appreciation for the product because i already have more customers that want the said product then i will be allotted, so where demand is high and supply is low the price goes up.
So im sorry if that makes you think i should go out of business, but the truth is that it is very hard to be a stable hobby store in the first place so we tend to like making as much as we can we things like this come up.
If you still wish my business to burn to the ground i guess thats your choice.
I didn't say burn to the ground. You'd get insurance money for that. I want an HONEST business to open near you and take all the customers. We have ONE shop in Topeka, with the other nearest being in Lawrence. Best piece about our store, is that it is completely honest, and actually appreciates our business. We get people who come in from Manhattan and Lawrence RATHER THAN their shops, because ours treats customers right. Not only is everything MSRP (barring distributor mark up, which they TELL US ABOUT), there is ALSO a discount card! Yeah, it CAN be difficult maintaining a hobby store. They've struggled in the past. Then they learned some basic economics and marketing. It is 20x better to keep an existing customer than to create a new one. If you are loyal to your customers, they will be loyal back. FTV for above MSRP is NOT loyalty. It is profiteering. Just because you have a monopoly on a product, doesn't mean you should be able to get away with artificially jacking up the price. I spent 2 hours talking to the owner about these practices this saturn's day. His summary was that it is incredibly disloyal and disingenuous to the customers who feed him and his family, as well as those of his employees. Obviously, if you and our LGS were right next door to each other, I'd choose ours. I value honesty and loyalty above your profits.
Everyone in my group has had a single comment about this one. "There had better be a few bombs, like some stuff from 3 kingdoms, or I'm not buying this one." A few bombs, and I'd consider it. HINT: Cards that are already averaging at 2 dollars aren't bombs.
Kaalia/Mimeoplasm/(Karador or Ghave)/Riku/(Zedruu?)/Command Tower/Sylvan Library almost certainly accounts for 7 of the 18 cards, and I wouldn't be shocked if Scavenging Ooze and Edric were two of the others.
From my perspective, only a foil Rolling Earthquake or a Ravages would do it at $75 a pop.

This was brought up in my Commander playgroup today. If this fails to sell to the casual Magic playerbase, as it very well might at $75, will WotC's plans to do Commander decks every year get scuttled?
