So I have been thinking. We last saw Gideon and Jace on Zendikar when the Eldrazi awoke. And I know Gideon planeswalked to Ravnica to get assistance.
So here is my speculation:
I am thinking that Gideon gets the assistance of the Boros Legion and Possibly the broken Simic Combine in creating a Gate/Portal to Zendikar to allow some refugees to come through. This could explain how the legged merfolk ended up on Ravnica and could allow for a few other creatures and important characters to be in Ravnica from a destroyed Zendikar.
This also explains the name Gatecrash as it could either be that the creatures are crashing through, or it could be that the gate has crashed and caused some kind of "bad stuff" to happen.
I like the idea of planeswalkers not abandoning all the poor people in Zendikar who can't planeswalk and who are just doomed, but I don't know if it will happen
As long as the massive end battle leaves Ravnica intact so we can visit it again in a later block, I'm good with it.
Same here. Ravnica is my favorite Plane (and block) and would hate to see it destroyed in any way. But personally I think that the above makes sense from the last time we saw some of the characters, and would explain the merfolk with legs (which to my knowledge have only appeared on Zendikar).
Now I am not saying the Eldrazi will make an appearance but something with the portal causes a catastrophe that gives the conflict this block will have.
I don't know- didn't they just do a pretty thorough job of taking care of really the only two people in the multiverse that had the know-how to construct planar portals or planeswalking airships in what they did with Karn and Venser?
Venser is now dead, and given what Karn just went through and what he's seen in the past of planeswalking airships and planar portals, I really don't think he's going to be in any sort of a rush to do anything that's going to make the phyrexian infestations he already created be able to pick themselves up and become even more mobile and more of a threat to other planes.
Unless one of the planeswalkers heads back to Dominaria, finishes up what Venser had started -per the comics he was nearing completion on a planeswalking airship- it just seems kind of an odd and random thing to pull out of nowhere, especially considering how big a deal they've trying to reinforce being a planeswalker being, though now all they really do is planeswalk- they aren't the nigh-omnipotent eternal titans of magical energy they once were.
You know, even though this is where i want things to go, i wasnt really sure theyd do it... i mean jace seems like the kind of guy who jight not give a **** about Eldrazi... but then they brough in Gideon too? I have to say im a little more hopeful. But the sins are only so deep right now... so maybe theyll finally do something interesting and actually set up for an immediate follow up next block? Maybe on a different plane?
I've been speculating on this story for a long time, much longer than RtR has been public knowledge, and I'm convinced that A) Ravnica is a refuge for the displaced of the multiverse (aka Zendikar refugees, Mirrans, etc.), B) Our planeswalker cast will be trying to build an alliance here to fight the threats of the multiverse (Eldrazi, Phyrexia, etc.), and C) it's all part of Nicol Bolas' plan (personally I think he's trying to gather PWs in one central location so that he can attempt to drain their spark and re-ascend to godhood)
The thing is, WoTC is still in the middle of developing the identity of set-pieces post-mending, so if Rav does become inter-planar sanctuary, I wouldn't expect much to actually get done about it plot wise (It'll be a small footnote.)
We still have to revisit Dominiria (My favorite fantasy plane when set during Timespiral.) and Kamigawa.
Actually, I could see this happening. Nissa shows up seeking help to defeat the Eldrazi. Somehow a portal is created that allows the evacuation of refugees and in Gatecrash something gets through that's not supposed to.
I doubt we'll be returning to Kamigawa any time soon, we did just skip it after all (We got Scars of Mirrodin, then Innistrad, then Return to Ravnica, while the original releases were Mirrodin, Kamigawa, Ravnica), it's going to be a while, plus with Shandalar being referenced here and there that may be another plane that gets "revisited" (I say this since it only was visited in games and books while not actually visited in the paper game).
Also, if Ravnica becomes the "inter-planar sanctuary" or the "hub area" for planeswalkers (the hub thing is kind of already happening given the fact that alot of planeswalkers have gone and hung out on Ravnica), what's the point of Dominaria? After the whole Invasion/Karona thing Dominaria was pretty much just a hub area for the planeswalkers until Time Spiral and after that I'm assuming it went back to being a planeswalker hang out (given that Ajani, Elspeth, and Koth were all there before the events of Scars of Mirrodin).
Dominaria remains the "center of the multiverse" and pretty important on a certain
scale.
In regards to Ravnica becoming a refugee plane for the people of Zendikar, I can
see that. I mean, Ravnica is no longer cut off from the rest of the multiverse, so it
is not out-of-the-question.
- Gideon finally finds a representative of the Consortium on Ravnica
- Gideon explains what the crap is happening on Zendikar
- Enter the first expansion of RtR
- Jace gets wind of this and joins up with Niv to construct a transportation device
and they begin trafficking Zendikar's survivors to Ravnica
- Enter Gatecrash
- The Eldrazi follow the vessel's "mana trail" (that thing all walkers leave behind
during planar travel), which leads them to Ravnica
Is it possible there already *is* a portal open at the start of RtR (or at least GTC)?

Or Nissa could get eaten by Eldrazi. I'd prefer that.
I really like this concept, and it's plausible based on what we currently know about RtR/GTC. My only concern is that it might be too early for the Eldrazi to return; it really hasn't been that long since Zendikar.

Indeed, that's a pretty big strike against them.
However, I'm pretty sure MaRo mentioned them in a somewhat recent article,
specifically mentioning that the next time we see them, they won't be using Annihilator and will have a different ability to showcase their extreme power level.
This *could* mean they already have more Eldrazi clashes planned for the not-too-distant future, but I wouldn't put money on it just yet.

has anyone thought about the possibility that maybe the eldrazi have been to Ravnica before and maybe the Ravnican people just called them Nephilim...just a thought I had while reading this.
And it would stick with the mutli-color theme very nicely!!

That is true, I forgot about him. Since he is the only non Zendikar legged merfolk so far.
Also I don't think the Eldrazi will be making an appearance, just the refugees.
all these merfolk have legs and are not from zendikar:
Maritime Guard, Merfolk Looter, Merfolk Mesmerist, Merfolk Sovereign, Scroll Thief, (and if you want to count them as they have flippers) Wistful Selkie, and Selkie Hedge-Mage
Hopefully Ravnica does not dets demolished by Eldrazi or Phyrexians. I think I had enough of planar wide desruction plots for the meantime.
The Masques Merfolk also have legs. I think that's when it started.
And it would stick with the mutli-color theme very nicely!!
Niv is strong, but he couldn't take on the nephilim (basically the old 'gods'
of Ravnica).
To suggest he could destroy the Eldrazi is a joke.
