Our store owner's second in command said that WotC cut their initial order in half because there won't be enough product to go around at launch time.
Confirm or Deny?
If true, maybe WotC should stop printing all these stupid f'in special sets in order to allocate resources to important things like, I dunno, major expansion sets?
There's always a few week break before they start printing more of a set. At the current time, it seems like there might be more then usual interest then they usually have so far away from release.
'Course, they don't talk about collation and print numbers.
I actually like those, but I agree with you. If they're getting in the way of actual expansion sets in any way shape or form, do away with them completely and immediately!
I was told last week that my regular store will have rationed quantities. But, they also said that, because they buy from multiple distributors, they aren't sure how that is even possible.
Still, a long time in advance and they are being told about distribution limits...
Where are these mythical areas constantly affected by these shortages?
The supply in our area has been "cut short" (less than other previous sets) with M10, Zen and presumably, with WWK.
I'm a competitive player. I like to have access to huge card pools that I own.
Number of cards/packs/product of any kind in the last year I've wanted, but have been unable to get from my store: 0.
This crap is getting old. Someone please explain how "shortages" are reported every damn set now, but almost everyone's demands are being met. (My local store also runs 2 16-24+player drafts every week if not 3.)
There is literally no advantage in having any sort of restriction in the amount of product initially released. Not meeting the initial demands for product directly translates into lost profit. Therefore I think its safe to assume that there are problems at the production level. A delay in production, or moving forward the release date, or technical problems with printing, or some dramatic last minute change in the set, could all lead to a decrease in available product on the release day.

I live in brooklyn, and there are three different stores in new york that i go to. during M10, all three were out and couldn't get more for 2 weeks+. and with zen, there was a week or so when one of them was out and couldn't get more. stores online were totally sold out of m10. not mythical.
that said, i'd be shocked of there was a shortage of worldwake... there's not even that much hype about it yet.
Our store ran out of M10 and Zendikar quite quickly. I saw around 32 boxes go out and that was the end after the first day. We didn't see any more until 2 weeks later. It sucked. Most of us were scrounging at other stores several hundred miles out.

I work at Games of Berkeley, a store in Berkeley, CA. We ran out of M10 for a few weeks and ran out of Zen for about a week. We've jacked up the prices of our packs and drafts to meet demand. I still run 8-12 8 player draft pods a week. We have a huge player base in the area. We go through more than a case a week and right now Wizards is only sending us a case a week.

You appear to be..I"m not even sure what.
I don't know of any areas that DIDN'T experience this problem, frankly. I know that you're hard-pressed to find any decent # of Zendikar packs anywhere in the entire Phoenix Metropolitan area. I know that it was the same for M10. And I know people in cities across the country that have had the same problem.
Maybe you're just lucky?
Whatever the story, the whole thing is ridiculous, and the idea that they're already advising people of this for a set that doesn't even come out for 3 months is astounding.
I don't see how they can't just make more. What, did the world run out of cardboard and ink? I doubt it.
Our shop in Redmond, WA also has had problems with M10 and Zen, like everyone else.
I'm starting to think its a combination of Magic organized play gaining in popularity and Wizards changing production behavior: 4 sets a year + collector sets is new for them, a sudden burst in sales would take all the stock away if they misjudged.
I think a lot of it comes down to Sealed/Draft getting more popular for the "average player". A popular store can go through a case of boxes in a weekend, easily. If every store is doing that well, then that's an issue!!
From what I understand and was told by my local store owner, they're preparing stores to make sure they don't order too much product and have to eat huge chunks of it. Something similar happened when Fallen Empires was printed. Stores wanted as much as possible because everyone seemed to have a huge demand for it, then when sales quickly slowed small stores that had ordered too much lost a huge chunk of money.
Also keep in mind the man behind the curtain. Hasbro doesn't want WotC to spend a bunch of money printing product that may not sell out.

What is this, the world of Atlas Shrugged? Why does WotC purposefully deny themselves profit and their customers product?
This being the third time in a row, I'm absolutely convinced that they're doing it on purpose. some how it seems they've found a way to profit from this. perhaps they see it like this: if players see supplies as limited they're more likely to buy in bulk early on.

It does feel like it's on purpose, but to what end? If people are STILL clamouring for ZEN, then where is the profit? I mean these guys are literally printing money here, it dosen't make sense to stop when everybody still wants the product. People want to draft and play sealed.
Perhaps they way overprinted SOA/CON/ARB, and short-printed M10 and ZEN to force store owners and players to draft Shards block so they sell them.
I dunno, but it's annoying as heck when your area only has 2 places to buy product, and neither one has what you want.
The issue here is that any product that wizards prints, it has to take out a loan for, because it can't shell out that much out of pocket money. It is then almost guaranteed to be able to pay back the loan and turn a profit. However it is really hard to get a loan right now because banks are scared of lending money, even to big corporate borrowers like hasbro. As a resault wizards is limited in how much they can print at a time. There are no 'intentional' shortages, this is just a sucky economy being bad for buisness and that is that.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
I have talked to 5 major distributors of WOTC product. Everyone of them says the same thing stores now are ordering 3-4 times what they ordered this time last year so it is the stores creating the shortage. Plus the large influx of internet stores and such selling product, the huge upsurge in drafting have all created a demand that is far and above what we have ever had for Magic in the last 16 years. WOTC is actually releasing more product per release now then they did with any previouse sets, problem is they can not keep up with the demand of product because of printing times.

Maybe the US dollar tanking is affecting things as well. With pack prices being "fixed," more or less, maybe that affects things up the chain.
