This thread is devoted to discussion of anything related to this year's MtG World Championship in Paris. It's a five-day event that started on Wednesday with six rounds of T2. As I'm writing this, they are done with round 9 (round 3 of Time Spiral drafting)
I just want to know if the Brazilians (Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa and "Mr. Silver" Willy Edel) can keep up the momentum and both make top 8.
I'm excited that Tsuyoshi Fujita might make a Worlds Top 8 (if he wins it, that will certainly make him a lock for next year's Hall of Fame ballot)
Hey, GOOOOOO PV (Paulo Vitor Damo de Rosa). He's a fun dude to play with, at least on magic-league. Sadly if he wins worlds he'll probably drop out of magic-league and go full time modo. Just like Nuijiten. Meh.
BTW, Rich Hoaen, is 5-0 in draft today, proving once again (as if t8ing the last 2 gps didnt) that those criticizing his draft with rich columns are morons.

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
I went through a few of the players draft picks in Draft 2, pod 1, and noticed a lack of Cancels floating around. I knew that some people valued Cancel highly for draft picks, so I wanted to see who was taking them.
Much to my surprise, no one was. Not a single Cancel was cracked in that draft pod. Yet, multiple Voids, Krakens, and other rares/timeshifteds were opened. What are the odds?

Waiting patiently for MTGO Leagues to become a priority again. It's been 4 years .
Drop by my Helpdesk if you have any questions/concerns on the Limited forum.
Excited for M13 Limited? What do you think the format will look like? Head over to the limited forum and let us know what you think.
Yeah, PV is awesome. I didn't like a couple of his draft picks though. He drafted BR Slivers, but not picking Stuffy Doll? Isn't Stuffy Doll the awesomest in Limited? (I think, it was pick3, pack3? I think, he took Grapeshot over it...)
Edit: Checked: It was pack3, pick3. Fujita 1st-picked Errant Ephemeron from that booster. Arita 2nd-picked Amrou Scout. PV 3rd-picked Grapeshot. Ruud.W 4th-picked Spined Sliver. And then Jonathan Rispal (probably shouting "Christmas!!!" in his mind) took Stuffy Doll...
Truthfully, its better in Time Spiral Sealed than in Draft.
If PVddR was drafting Black-Red Slivers, he probably was looking to be aggressive and did not want the five-cost Doll over the two-mana Grapeshot that can serve to finish a game (I am assuming that he is drafting a low-cost aggressive deck that can really take advantage of a lategame Grapeshot)
@RickCorgan: Edel hasn't fallen that far off. He is only one point behind the top 8 right now.
Here is the top 32 as WotC has them now (it has been having trouble staying up today)
1 Japan 78 56.74% <--THAT'S A STUNNER
2 Portugal 72 55.40%
3 Netherlands 72 51.93%
4 Brazil 69 56.94%
5 United States 69 52.85%
6 Israel 66 54.53%
7 Norway 64 52.16%
8 Argentina 63 54.58%
9 Wales 63 52.08%
10 Austria 63 51.31%

As a magic-league regular, I'm also firmly on the Paulo Vitor bandwagon. PV is a great guy, and it'd be great if he won worlds. I also don't think he'd pull a Nuitjen and leave magic-league, as he just goes there to have fun mostly anyways. He's also not stuck up like most pros are, and regularly talks with scrubs like me.

Not to mention, the guy was ranked #1 in Brazil at 14 years old, if I'm not mistaken, leaving then World Champion Romão with #2. That's gotta tell something. I heard the only reason he hasn't broken into the scene earlier is because his mother wouldn't let him travel.
But yeah, he's an all-around nice guy. He conceded an interview to a teammate of mine (and friend of his) a week ago, which went to our local Magic site.
Bracht stalled in an Intentional way. He mulliganed to 4, and boarded his win conditions out, because there were only 7 minutes left for the last game and it was assumed that he figured that he couldn't win in that time.
Personally, I don't see how he could be Disqualified for mulliganing (obviously not alone, but that was one of the reasons given). How do you want to judge, whther his hand really was not that bad? And even then it is his decision , and you can't get punished for blaying badly. I wasn't there, but I don't think that there were enough reasons given which would allow for disqualification. therwise they'd told us them. I can understand that StarWarsKid was upset, becasue he needed only 1 more turn, but that's the way it is.
What I've heard is that Sheldon Menery really pushed for Bracht's disqualification.
They usually don't outline all the details, but note how they always say decisions are taken after investigation. I believe that means they talk to the players in such a way to make them admit what they did wrong (there are plenty of techniques to do this), and then act accordingly.
The ending to the Mihara/PV match was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. When Mihara played that Sleight of Hand then realized it was short, there was seriously like a 5-10 minute silence as he just sat there wondering what he did. I'm also pretty sure Mihara was crying, or at least shaking, and PV was kind of laughing. Then all of a sudden Mihara just plays the Repeal and topdecks the Rite and wins. I've never seen anything like it. :/
While I must congatulate Mihara, one can't deny his incredible luck against both PV and Gabriel Nassif. I'd have preferred to see one of those in the final.
Also, a big congratulations to Netherlands for winning the Team finals against Japan. That last match between Medevoort and Yamamoto is the most intense and exciting limited match I've ever seen. It was unbelievable that Medevoort came out of that match winning, but the Dutchies learned everybody a lesson of skill (and some topdeck luck :p).
I did notice one thing in the top 8 of worlds.... only 3 trickbinds in the 8 decks and each were one-ofs.... Dragonstorm will bite the dust with a well placed one of these followed by a good bounce spell... Plus in extended trickbind would have been great too... that or stifle. oh well....
Congrats to all who played in worlds, and especially our new World Champ Mihara, and the Netherlands for their team win! Plus good luck to all in the following PTQ extended season....

this is mtgs, where occam's razor is so blunt it can't cut jello any more.
I feel that they should handle Worlds like they should handle every major marathon: they should automatically give the championship to a player who comes from the dominant country (Japan for Magic, Kenya for marathons). The Japanese are to Magic as the Kenyans are to marathons, and they make it just as fun (read: NOT) to follow.
I personally think that you are taking the fact that the US used to be so dominate and forgetting it (or throwing it out the window). The US used to be much better than most other countries around the world. We aren't now. What do we need to do? study better and harder. The Japanese can beat us right now partially cause of the Language barrier too.. More Japanese players can read English than the other way around... I could almost garuntee it.
Personally I feel that the US (and everyone else) need to study and playtest more if they want to beat Japan right now. Its just the truth....
(Plus there's just some things that the normal meta isn't setup for... That's part of playtesting too.)
