Recently had dealings with some newer players in my College's TCG Club, and I noticed that sometimes new players say some things that are just downright hilarious.
- Lent out an EDH to someone who just started playing a month ago, a bit into the match he calls me over, says "why the hell do you play this card? It's so bad" he points to Phyrexian Arena. There was no facepalm big enough
-Had an argument with a newer player about Ponder vs Preordain, he claimed that preordain was absolutely useless when compared to Ponder because "It's looking at three instead of two".
So anybody else ever have an experience like these?
when one of my friends was just starting out, he insisted on running less than 20 lands when he had many 5CMC+ creatures in his deck with no way of cheating them into play.
one of my friends said that planeswalkers are too expensive and have no real point to them, even though I told him that they can do some nuts things when used right
that's really all I can think of, but many people I know have been playing much longer than I have
I met a kid who built an "ite" deck and liked to explain it. It was Black/White, with all the non-land cards ending in "ite" sounds. (ex. Child of Night, Mire's Blight, White Knight, Black Knight, etc...) That one made me laugh, but I was surprised to see how many cards he actually came up with.

Jace bounce was a -1. He could do it 3 times before he would die. Liliana can only do it once before having to do her +1. Overall very disappointed with her unless we get Madness.
Crap, you're right, she's not as good as one of the single most overpowered cards ever printed. Unplayable!
Some players tried to tell me that "T: add G to your mana pool." and similar abilities meant to search your library for the corresponding(is that the right word?) basic land and put it into play. I told them they were wrong, and explained how it works, and they told me I was just dumb and didn't know the rules. I had been playing for ten years. They had been playing for less than 2. so, the next day, I came to lunchtime gaing with a deck that was 1 Orochi Leafcaller and all the Forests I owned (It was around 500)
I made them sit through each search and shuffle while I grabbed a few hundred, then they whined about being late to class, and conceded to me They understood the rule after that.
and then they tried to say there was no legend rule, so they could play 4 copies of Silvos =.=

newer players can come up with some interesting deck ideas now that you mentioned it.
back when coldsnap was relatively new, some kid who must have been around ten decided he wanted to make a deck built around the auroch cards in that set such as bull aurochs and aurochs herd and whatever else there was. The funniest part was that he thought he could win every tournament at the store once he was finished the deck
I know a kid right now playing Mono-Red and who is darn sure that Slash Panther is the greatest card ever printed, and that most cards in RDW are pure jank He's a good kid though

New Player: So do artifact creatures get summoning sickness?
Me: Yes, they're creatures
New Player: But artifacts dont get summoning sickness
Me: But creatures do, and they are creatures

-_____-. I despise this argument, and they usually never let you win. They INSIST they're right, every. time.
But...artifacts do have summoning sickness. As do lands. But only creatures suffer I'll effects. If a land or artifact becomes animated, then it will suffer I'll effects.

How was your demonstration supposed to clarify the rule to them?
But...artifacts do have summoning sickness. As do lands. But only creatures suffer I'll effects. If a land or artifact becomes animated, then it will suffer I'll effects.
first off, "i'll effects" doesn't make any sense.
second, i'm pretty sure your wrong, because summoning sickness says it can't use tap abilities either, which isn't the case for lands or artifacts that aren't creatures.

Unless a permanent has been under your control since your last upkeep began, it is sick from being yanked from its home plane. Whether it is land, enchantment, creature, artifact, or planeswalker, you are the groggy child asking mommy for "five more minutes". Illness prevents you from using a t or q ability and from attacking with a CREATURE. Explain it that way. Only the creature really suffers from mommy pulling the covers off and throwing the light switch on.

You're really proficient at correcting grammar and usage, good sir.
As to the nature of this thread, at an extended tournament 2 years ago, I was playing Martyr-Proc against a Thopter-Depths combo deck. He proceeded to play his Sword of the Meek on turn two followed by Thopter Foundry turn three. He tapped his available land, place his sword in the graveyard and said "Make a thopter. Go infinite". I calmly raised my hand, called judge (I needed a witness) and cast Extirpate on the dead sword. Judge RIGHT THERE, the kid takes the sword out of his yard and says, "Well it's not there after I get my thopter, so I have my 'mondo' life and tokens."
I would have let him just mull that over, but the judge picked up why I called him over, explained that there was no infinite loop without infinite mana, the sword playset gets exiled and he gets a warning for manipulation of zones - potential fraud :/ (unintended as I just wanted someone else to see how awesome this net-decker's leet speeching was.)

I know back when I first started I thought you could put mana in your mana pool to use for later turns and I thought Madness meant you could just discard it for no reason and play it for the Madness cost.
I've seen this one a few times (even "guilty" of it myself back in ye old days) from players who only got half the message on how the stack and co worked.
"So you use your Prodigal pyromancer's ability on me? In response I tap him with Gideon's lawkeeper so he can't use it!"
Yup folks, since the ability activated last happens first, it can be used to "counter" other abilities. Which has led to more than one pinger staredown.
2/2 flying...... oh wow thats so powerfulll
5 casting cost....... 2/2 flying for 5 casting cost hmm..........
echo........ 2/2 flying for 5 + echo ....... lol..........
protection from black...... so what?
return a creature in play........ ok well thats the only thing that make that card decent....
so to resume.... 5 casting cost + echo for having a 2/2 flying creature pro black who ressurect something.....
i prefer having something else
The above I can understand because if you don't know about all of the cards and interactions in the game you might not realize how good an easily recurrable unconditional reanimator is awesome.
I've seen newbies tap their creatures to block. This has some logic to it so I guess I can't fault them too much. I mean if noone ever explained to you everything and you just knew creatures tapped to attack...
I had some friends who thought that whenever you blocked with a creature you had to tap it.
One thing they can never get down straight is that lands are colorless (minus Dryad Arbor which is an extreme case) and everything but lands are spells.
But all-in-all they do well for what we generally play which is Commander with Planechase w/ 2 active planes at a time. It can get a bit confusing.

I was starting out playing my brother, whose favorite card was rimescale apprentice (no longer sure of the name... it's been a while). So I would attack and he'd tap my attacker. I ended up making an exalted deck and played him with that when I got a great idea: if I attack with two creatures and he taps one, then the other one is attacking alone, so it gets the bonus!
Then a few years later I became a rules adviser. Funny how things work.

It's kind of another moment when we throw our hands up and go "DAMMIT universe, why you gotta always make me look bad in front of everyone?".
Some new standard player saw a friend's Aether Vial and said "My Quicksilver Amulet is way better than Aether Vial!"
Now maybe it's just me that had to sit for a second and say "what the f**k", but...
Last night at FNM we had a huge crowd come out for DKA/INN/INN drafting, and we always get a lot of little kids, but they usually know most of the rules. My friend Josh (who's like 50) points one kid in our pod out and claims that he will be a wild card. The kid's kinda weird lookin'... Not doing anything wild. During our first pack, though, someone says, "Hey look there's two Gravetiller Worms in this pack, isn't that rare?" and I was like " I don't think that's possible..." it was like pick 7... Josh goes "alright whoever cheated, don't do it again." and the little wild card says "I'll cheat if I want to." [/palm]
LOL I had a guy at his house play an Equinox deck. He played it then he would cast Armageddon and thought all his lands were protected buy all mine were destroyed. He would not relent until the next time we played at the LGS and there was a judge there.
