I haven't posted here as regularly as I did before 4 years ago because I was going through my university stage. I got that all cleared out now, so I managed some time for painting a few cards. Did just a few quickies last week to remember how to handle acryllics and thought it would be cool to share them here. Nothing groundbraking, most are stupid-simple stuff that I painted for my EDH/Cube/Stack/Collection/Whatever
As you might have realized by now, I like these kind of alters with some part of the art popping out of the frame.
Paint got thicker than I thought it should be
My favourite :)....just don't know where to use it, though...
I might come back to this one some day and add some details. I'm not entirely pleased with this one yet.
Some friends thought this one was the coolest of this batch. I might get back at detailing the leaves somewhere in the distant future.
Squirrels I kinda rushed most squirrels, so I might get back to adding details to this someday.
Looks worst in the picture. Matching yellows still seems to be my weak spot after all this time without painting.
Oldest of the bunch. I think I've altered this one 2 months ago when I got a break from my thesis project. It currently resides in my Sheoldred EDH
@Pendrell.
This is truly epic.
Great work. You're seriously making the case for me to try doing some simple extensions like this for cube or commander.

Thanks so much. Yes, I am using arcylics (mostly Games Workshop paints but I am moving towards professional artist's acrylic that my friend owns. That or Vallejo). I used to paint warhammer, as the paints may give away, so I tend to use the fine detail brush for the last details (if that provides a reference).
Thanks for the support in any case, check by my blog, it's updated more frequently than this
Captain Claw, those lands are amazing. I would love to run something like those in my decks. Are you using acrylics, and how are you finishing them? Man you must be using some nice brushes to get that much detail. I really need to upgrade my brushes and work on my technique, because those are just SAUCY! 2 thumbs up man!

The new art tundra is gorgeous and the daft punk is bad@$%. I loved the urza art duress and that alter just surpasses the original art in so many ways.
I dig that Skullbriar a few posts up as well. Nice work!
Got around to making a Xmas gift for one of my buddies today. I know it's been done before, but this is his favorite general.

Thanks. I have been having trouble getting the strokes to blend together. Someone suggested mixing with more water, but I always seem to make my cards curl up a lot when I water the paint down that much. Usually I end up putting the card under a stack of books to fix it, but I am open to suggestions.
I know that there are a number of ways to deal with it. The main way is to water your paints down, but this only works well if you are using high quality paints. Craft paints, "student" paints, and cheap sets usually aren't going to give you the coverage you need when they are watered down. You can also go with a fluid acrylic which I know a lot of painters use here. They have the same pigment load as heavy body (normal thick paint) per ounce, but they are very runny. I know that I personally, use some Airbrush paints because they are very watery and act almost like ink. One thing to consider is that paint brushed get really sloppy once paint hits the ferule - the metal thing that holds the bristles in - and it's important to keep your paint just on the tip. I am constant using a paper towel to pull excess paint off the bristles. It also takes a bit of practice.
Thanks for the tips, I just have the normal acrylic paint. I've had trouble getting even coats which I think I need to use the water for. I'll have to look into getting the liquid acrylic stuff. Any recommendations on the types I should be looking for?
Or as always, you can find me on twitter @BlackWingStudio or DeviantArt
Wow, that's really impressive. Good creativity there.
