1998 for me, been sucked into it since 2000 ^^; I was 9 when I spent my first $50 on cards, and went to little events on Friday nights and Saturdays. By the time I was 13, I was already sucked into the meta, and even affecting it =O This game has been a rather large part of my life

Currently Getting Back into the swing of MTGS. Bear with me folks~
I hate the development of metagame. When I started playing you never saw the same deck. Everyone had their own spin on things. I really dislike that at the pro level you just see the same decks against eachother. The pro level should have the most unique and creative decks!
I wish Wizards would not have allowed deck development to devolve into that.
The biggest problem, honestly, is the internet. I hate that they post pro deck lists so much around the site. Not that I don't think the spikes should have access to it, but I just think it would keep things more diverse. Do you know why Caw-Blade is so good? Not because it's the only possible deck of its type right now, it's just the most developed, because the meta latched onto it. *endrant*

Okay, now seriously:
Capashen LiegeWW
Creature - Human Knight
Other Knight creatures you control get +1/+1 and have plainswalk. The stately fields of wheat outside his manor have become a proving ground against the Phyrexian menace.
2/2
Rebirth of Souls2WB
Enhcantment (R)
Whenever a nontoken creature you control is put into the graveyard from play, put a 1/1 white Spirit creature token into play.
wha, Field of Souls except one mana in the cost is black instead of white?
Dual Return2G
Sorcery
Kicker UB
Return up to two target creatures from your graveyard to the top of your library in any order. If the kicker cost was paid ~ was kicked, instead put those creatures onto the battlefield.
OH! I just figured it out - they had mana burn back in 2001!
Mana Repository 6
Artifact
If you would take damage from Mana Burn, put that many mana counters on Mana Repository instead.
:symtap:: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
:symr:, :symtap:, Sacrifice Mana Repository: Mana Repository deals damage to target player equal to half the number of Mana counters on it, rounded down.
Same here, but it's an on-again/off-again type of love affair, as I don't have a regular group of players (since I've moved pretty much every year-two since high school), so aside from the occasional pre-release, a FNM now an then, and pick-up games with family (or in various air terminals)... it's pretty much loving from a distance. I used to be obsessed... now I just fondly remember that passion, and have found other things that occupy my time much more. Maybe after grad school, when I get another "big boy" job, and settle down
So... 2001. Let's see, that'd be Odyssey block? Sure... especially since one of my favorite cards ever, Traumatize made it's debut then.
Cephalid Bureaucrat2UUU
Creature - Cephalid (R)
Whenever a player draws a card, that player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
Threshold - Whenever a player puts cards from the top of his or her library into his or her graveyard, that player puts twice that many cards from the top of his or her library into his or her graveyard instead. Even under the Otarian oceans, two things still remain inescapable: death and taxes.
"Here only miracles. Here, only the rising of spirit. And yes, love if it was pertinent (which it was so often); and sometimes bloodletting. But never the prosaic, never the trivial. Here the man who brought the strangest tale was the most welcome. Here every excess was celebrated if it brought visions, and every vision analyzed for the hints it held to the nature of the Everlasting." - Clive Barker's Imajica
Vault of Whispers

Judgings:
In the interest of time, I will be taking a hardline stance on your cards. You'll see what that means shortly.
The one-year range (2000-2002) is in effect.
Zephynoir: Boil was reprinted in 8th Edition (2003). That said, this is a very good example of an effect that just is not done anymore.
pstmdrn: Going for an Apocalypse feel, I see. Aside from being pretty powerful (Sedraxis Alchemist) for comparison, this is a card that could see print today.
JTMS: That looks like an Apocalypse card. Specifically, Suffocating Blast.
secrethumorman: Aside from the awkwardness of sometimes needing two targets when unkicked, I suppose this could have been Apocalypse-era. Nothing stopping this from being printed today, though.
void_nothing: Going the flavor route, I see? Capashen is not a name that gets used much outside of a particular era of time (and a particular nostalgia block), which gets you some "clever" points I suppose. Also: lordofatlantis.jpg
Prophylaxis: I actually think this ability would NOT have been printed in 2001. They've been getting more adventurous with what cards can do since then, and this might have been off-limits. However, it does allow you to trigger Door to Nothingness all by itself. Not too bad.
SushiOtter: Aside from being powerful, I see nothing that says this couldn't be done now.
Brofaux: This... fits the challenge pretty much perfectly. Not that I care for the card much... A little subtlety goes a long way.
JFZ: Given that Living Atlas got printed as-is, I see no reason why this couldn't have happened today. Though to be fair, this is the kind of error that one would hope would be caught somewhere along the process.
Ninja Caterpie: Well, this fits just about as well as Brofaux's entry, except that your card is actually as unfair as possible.
Daiches: As a previous pilot of a blue braids EDH deck, I too have a fondess for her. Card's good; takes the flavor approach (and humorous flavor text, as well).
Set: Your time machine overshot by a few years there...
I think this challenge was malformed in my head/I didn't explain it correctly, but I think that the best two are:
Brofaux: Mana burn!
Daiches: The best of the flavor approach cards.
HM to Ninja Caterpie, who took the unique approach of choosing a name that hadn't yet been used (but since has), but then dicked it up by making a terrible card.
Winner: I think Brofaux's card fits the challenge better, as Daiches' card doesn't really do much that couldn't be done now, whereas Brofaux's card would require some leeeengthy reminder text to work correctly. I'll give it to Brofaux.
