I entered into a $20 M11 sealed tournament at my local shop. I won and got a From the Vault: Relics as my prize. I just started playing Magic a couple months ago, so all I play is Standard because it was the easiest for me to get into and learn and compete. I really have no desire to keep FTV: Relics for that reason. None of the cards appeal to me at all. I went into the tournament knowing that if I won I would sell it. Basically, I just want to know if you think it would be more profitable to sell it now or to hold onto it for a while and then sell it. I know StarCityGames is giving $50 cash or $60 trade for it, and it is currently selling for $70 on Ebay. Do you think it's going to go up in price or should I just sell now while it has a ton of hype around it?
I think if you hold onto it for a year, it will probably gain another 20-30 bucks. FTV:exiled sealed product sells for 80 bucks on ebay, and Dragons sells at 90. It seems that the cards in Relics are even more playable/awesome/sexy than either of the other FTV products. But maybe you dont want to sit around for that and just want to cash out now for 70. that's perfectly reasonable too.

I have no problem with holding onto it for a year. I wasn't sure what usually happened with the FTV sets. Knowing that they usually increase in price, I'll be holding onto it. Thanks.
There might be FTV products listed that high, but they rarely sell. I personally don't think holding onto these long term is a good idea, especially considering most of Relic's value is in one card whose demand is incredibly inelastic.
You can get a copy of FTV:E for $75 locally. Dragons' print run was incredibly small and too many people opened these, which is the only reason it commands a premium.

Considering Troll and Toad has 50 sealed FTV: Dragons in stock at $65, I don't see $90 as being too accurate.
It's a collector's item, so in the long run they're obviously going to be worth slightly more sealed compared to opened.
Well, the price of Relics isn't going to drop really is it? Obviously, if the price is going to drop I would want to go ahead and sell it now. As long as it will at least retain this price (and have the possibility of rising) then I don't mind keeping it.
when I did an Ebay completed auction search, i just noted the most recent FTV:dragons that sold at 89 bucks. upon further review, it seems that most of them are in the 60-70 range. I still stand by the idea of holding it though. (I certainly am not cracking mine.) I just dont see how a limited printing with alternate art foil sol ring, aether vial, and mox diamond can drop in price. Plus the ivory tower and nevinyrral's disk are hot, too.
weird side note: the spindown dice from the FTV sets go for like 4-7 bucks on ebay. that is crazy.

Is it sad that the only thing that was appealing to me in the set was the lifecounter? hahaha. Well, the Sword of Body and Mind was too. I guess that just shows how little I care about anything other than standard lol.

I think the price of Relics is absolutely going to drop.
Right now almost all the value is in a single card, the Mox Diamond.
The problem is that right now this card is worth a lot because, well, it's worth a lot. There is a very fixed demand for this card (Some EDH decks, lands.dec). We probably just doubled the supply, and considering that the old version is perceived as rarer the foil version is not necessarily even worth more.
As people realize this, the result is inevitable.
Mox diamond's value is definitely going to drop. I'd guess $30-$35 in a year. With that the set's value is going to fall.
I'd wait if I were you. Right now they are too easily available at better prices. I've picked up 8 so far, and 6 of those were under $40. In a year or so they won't be as abundant and will thus increase in value for those seeking them. Just my opinion

I don't know where you're seeing this. I see 53 in stock at $129.99. Please let me know where you see $65; I'll buy some more myself.

So.....I guess you don't play....Legacy....EDH.....Vintage......or Casual for that matter..... Do you play magic at all? Or are you just speaking from your "Expert Opinion"?
Legacy:
Aether Vial: 10$+
Currently used in one of the top Decks, Merfolk, which won GP: Columbus. It is an uncommon from Darksteel in normal print that is valued at around 10$
EDH:
Sol Ring: $15+
Mirari
Memory Jar
Nevinyrral's Disk.
Basically, this set was the EDH'er's dream. It contains a lot of the cards which are put in a many decks, all in foil, and some with alt. Art. Quite good.
Vintage:
Karn Silver Golem
Sundering Titan
Admittedly, I don't know much about vintage. I believe both of these cards are used in the "Stax" archetype however. Someone who knows, please correct me.
Casual/Future:
Mox Diamond
Masticore
Sword of Body and Mind
Yes, Mox diamond is the most valuable card in the set, but it will not in any way determine the set's value. Just as there are no real marquee cards in the dragons set, yet it still commands a hefty pricetag.
Honestly, the price of this set is either going to stick at 65-70 or go up, I personally think it is going to rise...but hey, maybe people don't like foil sol rings.

Sol Ring & Memory Jar are also heavily played in Vintage.
In the same boat as the OP, won a raffle and bought a FTV Relic for MSRP. Have no interest in the cards. Would it be beter to sell the box unopened, or two open it and sell the singles?
Alternatively, I may look at trading it to someone for a box of something.
Either hold onto it and wait for value or sell it now. I think a problem with cracking it is that you get stuck with cards that people don't want to trade for and you just lose value in part of the box.
The problem with cracking them is thats what everyone is doing right now. The Diamond, ring, and vial will sell and you should turn a nice little profit over the msrp. The rest will sit masticore and Karn might be $5 cards but they wont move in todays market IMO (case and point I bought a non foil Karn from the dollar bin this week just to have one). If you dont mind holding onto the less hot cards for a few months cracking it makes for easier sales on most of it. If you want to sell it all your better off keeping it sealed.

FTV:Dragons is expensive for the same reason that Jace vs. Chandra is. There just aren't many unopened. FTV:Exiled and FTV:Relics won't have this factor for the same reason that the other duel decks haven't hit $100+ -- a large percentage of people stopped opening them when they realized how much value they were destroying by doing so. The print run sizes didn't help matters either.
It's also funny that you spent many lines insulting me for my conclusions . . . and then partially drawing the same ones. ~$65 in a year is probably about what they'll be. $30 of that in the mox. I'd bet on under over over though. People in this thread were throwing around numbers like $100 and $125, or talking about them as investments, which is unsound.
Also about EDH and Vintage, in my experience a lot of EDH and Vintage players want to pimp out their decks are going more for rarity than anything else. I'd bet that in a year a normal mox diamond is more expensive than a FTV one.

The problem with your entire argument is that most of the cards you mentioned already have foils and FTV Foils compared to regular foils are TERRIBLE.
The only ones that don't are Disk and Diamond. That's where the value of this set will come from for most people.
