Within the past few days, I've seen several users, who I have a great deal of respect for, speak out against postcounts. As an individual who, until only recently, only exisited in the mafia fourms, I never really paid any type of heed into postcouts outside of getting my first 15 for a nifty banner.
It has been stated that removing postcounts would increase the amount of spam generated on the fourms, but I think once people stopped worrying so much about postcounts they would worry more about putting more content into their posts. There would be no reason to remove any spam rules, because is very detrimental to the fourm community as a whole. I was just wondering the opinions of other MTGS users on this issue.

I don't see a reason to remove post counts. I could go as far as just keeping them in the public profile page and not attached to every post by a user. But I think they are a good thing. Then again, I am not well informed of the con side.
Is the main issue that people just spam their way to 1000 posts to get a custom? If that is an issue, then change the system so that if you are here for X months (and are active) you get a custom. There is no reason to flip the switch for all the other accounts that have been inactive for a year and give them customs.
I like the post counts, cause it gives me a ridiculous goal of becoming the member with the highest post count. Sure it doesn't mean anything to anyone, but it is my own personal goal and taking that away by removing post counts would not be cool.
Also, this should have a poll.

Why not give these poster this (admittedly small) token of pride? Have incidents of poster superiority complexes been popping up? If so, I haven't really been aware of them.
I think they should be removed, together with join dates.
What is their purpose exactly ? To say that a given poster is more important than another ?
I'm having hefty discussions with Nan about what is useful or not today and I think these are some of the least useful features and should therefore disappear.
That said, I think this thread belong more in Speak Your Mind than here.
I pretty much agree with the sentiment of this post. "Back in the day" internet fourms were a way for individuals to converse with their peers, and eventually it evolved into a place where elitest attitudes were able to develop. Having post counts and join dates just encourages members to think better of themselves and to look down on those who have lest posts. From what I've seen there haven't been that many "OMFG you n00b gtfo" incidents here, but it's always possible that they can develop.
The problem is that people feel that they *have* to post in excessive quantitiy, and do not focus on the quality of their posts. The fact that people have goals to be the highest poster in the fourms is evidence of that. There is no possible way to post as much as some poeople do, and actually have their posts be relevant and meaningful.
(As a side note, it encourages people to spend large amounts of time on the internet instead of doing things in the real word that would instill an even greater amount of pride and sense of accomplishment and/or help make the world a better place.)
It was orignally to be posted in SYM, but I wanted there to be a serious discussion of the pros and cons of removing/keeping postcounts. I did not want a flame war/random comments/people not debating.

Me neither but it's an argument that we hear about every once in a while in the mafia forums when double-posting.
This is why I'd rather get rid of post count, cutting dhort on this argument.
If the majority of the problem comes from the Mafia forums, then don't display post counts or join dates in the Mafia, just like how i-trader ratings only show up in the trade forum.
I still like to have a number somewhere that tracks howmany times I have posted something on here. Even if it is not displayed publically.

I like postcounts for the purpose that it shows who the very active and, usually, who the more respectable members in a forum are. It does show that they are knowledgeable about forum rules and about the site in general because they have been here a while. They have an excellent grasp of how to handle themselves in the forum setting because of their experience.
I can see how it could be a superiority issue, but I really have not seen it displayed anywhere. Other than that, I believe it is merely an indicator of forum experience, and should be viewed thus.

If someone can't tell what's good posting and can't learn the forum rules on his own, maybe he should be lurking (and taking a reading comprehension class).
Forget no post count, there's something to be said for anonymous posting.
Giving members custom tags based on how long they've been members may result in some members having custom, but have not contributed to the forum at all, while some really active and contributive members, don't have one.
I don't mind post counts, but I must admit I sometimes have prejudices against members with less than 100 posts or so... Their opinion doesn't mean as much as those of a member with 1000+ posts.
I have a suggestion: You could make post counts outside profiles invisible at default, but you can turn them on again in your control panel if you would like to.
I've always thought the post count was a meaningless and useless feature. It is nothing more than elitism and serves no purpose. There must be ways to acknowledge the big contributors to these forums without using them, perhaps include milestones in an individuals profile instead. Of course, those of us who have been around a while are already well aware of our forum leaders anyway so post counts only serve to give new members some insight. Removing post count is a great idea.
I don't see any issues with it around here, but I understand how it can develop into a problem. What is the purpose of showing post counts? I don't see much of a list for that in this thread yet.
Giving members custom tags based on how long they've been members may result in some members having custom, but have not contributed to the forum at all, while some really active and contributive members, don't have one.
Maybe a good solution would be to make post counts invisible, but keep track of them and maintain the count-determined rewards.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
Like many have said, I don't see many issues on this forum regarding post counts. Yes, the possibility exists that a problem could develop, but it isn't like this is some fledgling website that's just starting out. Salvation has been around for two years, and if something hasn't developed already, I don't see the chances of something coming up as likely.

I think something that a few people are missing is that removing post counts would still not allow spam or double posting. The reason that those rules are in place is because spam/double posts clutter up a forum. Removing post counts doesn't change that.
This is not to say that I'm necessarily against removing postcounts, but that I think this is a misconception of an effect of removing them.
Why not give these poster this (admittedly small) token of pride? Have incidents of poster superiority complexes been popping up? If so, I haven't really been aware of them.
Why would anyone be proud for clicking a button x amount of times?
I think Post Counts should be obliterated fureva' and that Custom Titles should be handed out for the following:
* 5 Articles, AotM, and other awards
* Doing something the mods feel deserves a reward
* Being an active user for 1 year

I don't really think this is much of a problem. If you needed to, you could always use date joined as a requirement in place of post counts.
Well, postcounts would still be visible in profile, they just wouldn't show next to every post and wouldn't mean anything at all.
I'll call you a friggin loser though everytime I see you.
