Usually when MTGNews goes down, we end up with a thread eventually asking what happened to it. For various reasons myself and other old timers still visit 'News some times. That being said, MTGNews has been down for weeks and I have some information, so I thought I'd share:
According to my long time friend, THEDARKPRIESTCYRIC (long time admin), the owner, Raa, made a slip up when he tried to switch the forums to a different server. Due to not updating the MySQL code -The MTGNews version of which was 2001 code, which no servers support these days- he's created quite a mess and is having problems with the code.
At this point in time there is no telling when MTGNews will be back, if at all. As most people know, outside of a very tiny community of old timers, the website had fallen into disrepair due to neglect from the owner. While this isn't the official funeral for MTGNews, personally I'll be surprised if Raa goes through with making the effort to fix it (you know, since he cared so little about MTGNews to begin with).

I had been wondering what happened to MTGN. I sometimes would lurk there.

So basically don't expect news to be up in the next 3-4 months, yeah it's pretty much dead now i'm afraid to say, I'm one of the 20-25 regulars who visit there and such, so probably won't be going back there as of now.
EDIT: I was so looking forward to doing spoilers for there too.
I occasionally would go back and see what cards I created in the wee early days. Maybe I should have wrote them down, but I suppose they are lost now...
I still had a bunch of content there that I was too complacent to move anywhere else. God knows if it'll ever be back now.
So long, MTGnews. My 10000+ posts there thank you.

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
'News was the first MTG site that joined. I had recently created a new account there to play Mafia. I was surprised to see how many faces... er users I still recognized.
I'm still holding out hope, but even then its mostly so I can go back and save all my old card designs and maybe tally up my Mafia record. Maybe Raa will finally turn the site over the Realmworx, or even better DPC....

What are the chances of Sally allowing a 'Newsaholics' Clan?

Unfortunately, even now I doubt Raa will release 'News from his clutches. It's certainly been worth trying to wrestle the inherent history and nostalgia from his grasp, but it would be a huge gamble at this point for a buyer to get the code in working condition again. I suppose it's ironic in a way, since Raa can't have not lost money since MTGNews' activity decreased, and considering how many times he's been proposed offers... and now it's in a state where he'd be lucky to get someone to take it off his hands.
DPC and I have discussed the possibility of him starting a website for years, but several factors have come up that have prevented that from happening (not the least of which is having to leave the database and history behind). The idea of starting a new website wasn't met with too many positive feelings in the latest discussion over there regarding the state of things, when Realmworx stated Raa wouldn't budge. I suppose it's understandable though, considering how much history we'd have been losing, even though that may be lost now, regardless.
I can't imagine the MTGS staff would disallow an old timer's clan for MTGNews users (granted I'm not them). Granted, I know that wouldn't be a satisfactory solution to the void that 'News leaves for it's small user base that still remains. Much of those people grew accustomed to having their remaining small community or don't post here out of principle or due to various personal issues.

I wonder how MTGS will progress and, perhaps one day, close up shop (and what will become of users and their thousands of posts and hours). *Touches wood.*
MTGNews was awesome, in its day. It was all about the people, who seemed different then. People were cooler, and nobody was as intelligent as they are now. The game was different, it was simpler, and I could call damage on the stack. Our outlook on the future - now our past - was different. Being in The Called was awesome. There was a lot about that site's community that really helped me through some difficult times in high school, gave me a sense of belonging, and improved my writing. I miss what 'News had when it was the best. But I also recognize my part in its' demise.
Everything fades away. I'll miss all 5K+ posts I had, but not really, most of it was just bull$%#& anyway so I could get a silver icon next to my name .
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
MtgNews has failed to show up in my search engines or the link couldn't be found. Seems like the demise is complete. Still hope to see it up in some shape or form in future.

At this point, I've written it off, and you know that I'd be one of the last people to do that if it wasn't a stark reality. :/
But, I've not given up on hope that DPC'll get his forum up and running. It's terrible that we've lost the primary documentation of MTGN's history, but the real loss will hit if the community doesn't find a stable safehaven. :/

You're more than likely correct, however...
Forgotten One's suggestion of having an old timer's clan for 'News here seemed like a decent one. I know other than the nostalgia that the forum's size and traffic, maybe even the userbase and politics have made being active here somewhat undesirable to the lot; However, as a clan you guys would mostly be left alone to talk about anything that the small amount of traffic over at 'News had spawned.

No, not really. A clan wouldn't work. While the forums were generally inactive, it was still having a whole forums to ourselves that spawned half the fun we had. Containing ourselves within one thread wouldn't let us forum live the forum life we're used to forum living.
This is sort of sad. I was wondering what happened to the forums, but I guess those of us that visited the forum knew it was only a matter of time before something of this nature happened. Wish we all could've said goodbye one last time together :-/.
I was wondering about that.
I haven't posted there in a long while, but it's still sad to see it go.
I did like to go back through there and peruse my old posts every once in a while. Fortunately, I saved some of the threads I was interested in a few years ago. I guess there's always those internet archives, too.
This is sad, even though I haven't been on there for awhile, I did have a lot of fun while there, especially spamming my way up to 1,000 post via the quick reply games.

Pretty much this. Any new clan needs to be approved by the clans staff, but I don't imagine it being a problem at all.

Thank you for sharing this, Xen.
Very sad - I still don't understand what Raa has been thinking the past few years, why he hasn't been willing to sell the site.
Hopefully he'll come around and give it to someone who wants to grow the MTGNews community. We'll see. I'm not writing it off, yet...
