Some of you really need to realize that MTG was made for players FIRSTLY to spend money on their product, and secondly, and IMO more importantly TO HAVE FUN. (IMO, playing the same cookie cutter deck over and over is boring no matter HOW good it is.)
Yeah, I get it, you "Grinders" and "Investors" just lost out big, but if you rock so hard at Magic, i'm sure you have some other sets just itching to be played on a competitive level. For the "Investors", you knew what you were getting into. Just like any other market, it has it's ups and downs with it's peaks and valleys of supply and demand. It's been this way since the beginning. It's not a new concept.
My last point, and I'll stop after this...WotC make their decisions based on what the majority want. "Grinders" and "Investors" are not the majority(nor the priority). The majority is those of us who go to their local FNM, goof off, play a few casual games, or maybe win a few booster packs. MTG is about fun, and when you sap the fun out of it by cloning the best deck out there, you are not following the spirit of the game.
I really do appreciate that Wizards here sided with the casual player. Attendance at FNM matters to them, and I appreciate that.
I would hope that "investors" would have been smart enough to begin dumping SFM and Jace as the announcement approached. I know that, for the most part, people weren't expecting a banning, but if anything was going to go...

I understand the bannings from wotc point of view. 80% of the decks used JTMS. 80% of decks used SFM. The problem here is that the decks that used JTMS were mainly control decks that dominated. The decks that used SFM were much diverse, such as caw-blade, soul sisters, puresteel paladin, boros, GW, and probably others. It is a great card, and very diverse. I don't think this makes it too powerful or deserving of a banning. If wotc is going to ban cards that are played too much, then please ban Islands. I see those things everywhere. At our local FNM tonight there were 16 players. I was the ONLY player to play SFM (one last horrah). NOBODY played JTMS. There was a great diversity of decks, mainly aggro. A lot of people bought the event decks in the past couple of weeks, yet for some reason still preferred not ot play SFM (I know, odd group). But banning these cards for a local player base is absured and completely unnecessary. Seriously, it is what, 3 more months before they rotate anyway? Might as well just wait for the night before rotation to ban every card in the SOM block. I wonder if more people will quit playing magic b/c of these bannings over people returning who previously quit.
Also, jace 3.0 is a bad card. Just b/c his name is jace doesn't make him an all star. He's worse then tezz, koth, karn, and tirel. Only viable in a mill deck strategy deck.. so freakin limited. And I hope mill decks isn't the theme to 2012!

I run a single Ulamog in my sideboard at all times, just in case. It just completely pisses on mill.
They should have just let attendance drop for a summer instead of setting this horrible precedent. Now it shows that they might actually take the "QQ Ban X Card threads" seriously. Just because a bunch of donks lack the mental/financial resources to deal with a card doesn't mean it has to go. The JAce banning is also going to make R+D afraid to print powerful control cards, and the format being defined by idiot-proof decks like jund or valukut will become the norm. this is not healthy for the game at all
Jace was run by all Blue decks because it's the best blue card. That much is self evident. Skullclamp, on the other hand, could go into literally EVERY deck. Can you say the same for Jace? No. Control mirrors had Jace in their crosshairs. Valukut didnt care about it. Boros didnt care about it. RDW didn't care about it. Vengevine doesn't care about it. It's not skullclamp
Yes, because we all know Top 8s' were DOMINATED by RDW, Valakut and Vengevine. </sarcasm>
No, Top 8's were DOMINTED by good players in a very skill-rewarding format. Sorry it wasn't like Jund summer were any dumb hack and 7 year old can randomly win a tournament because their bloodbraid cascaded good.
They should have just let attendance drop for a summer instead of setting this horrible precedent.
Yes, if you want to see the game die because people continue to quit the game. Having people quit is a great way to see Magic decline as a game.
Are you seriously still pissed at the fact that you were convinced nothing was going to get banned on the 20th? When a deck was statistically more dominating than Affinity, compounded with significant drop-offs in tournament attendance, it astonishes me that you couldn't see the writing on the wall.
Also, a skill-heavy game does not automatically translate into being a fun-to-play one. Street Fighter III: Third Strike is very skill-intensive for example, but it is horrendously balanced because three characters (Yun, Chun-Li, and Ken) completely overpower the rest of the cast and make them unplayable. People love diversity; it's why Legacy has exploded in popularity as a format while Standard continued to stagnate during the Caw Blade era.
They knew Jace 2.0 was overpowered when they printed him. However it was when Jund was dominating standard, where Bloodbraid Elf could care less about him. Why was Jund created? Faeries. The UB powerhouse that needed an enemy.
Well don't you see? It's a chain reaction. Faeries, Jund, Jace... they can't just keep printing more overpowered cards just to balance out their previous mistakes. It had to end somewhere, and the drop in attendance let them know it was the best decision for the magic community.
I don't see how people who own Jace's can be mad about the situation financially... it's almost hypocitical. They say "I make lots of money and can afford Jace, so I would know." But then they go on to say, "WTF I just spent all this money on my Jace's, and now they're banned?!" Well if you have the money to afford them, I'm sure you can deal with his price dropping $20. Besides, he's still one of the best cards in Extended, Modern, and Legacy...
The format was not healthy, and anyone who says it was "skill intensive" is just using it as an excuse to react to the bannings. Here's an example of this so called "skill".
Player 1 wins the die roll, and chooses to play first.
Turn 2 he plays stoneforge mystic.
Turn 3 he passes with 3 mana open for counter magic. Player 2 doesn't want to run his own SFM into a mana leak, so he passes back.
End of turn 3, Player 1 puts into playSword of feast and famine.
Turn 4 Player 1 equips the sword, and attacks. Player 2 discards a crucial land or spell. Player 1 Untaps all his lands and plays Jace 2.0. Player 2 concedes.

There is a huge gulf between believing nothing would be banned (saw stoneforge coming a mile away) and my position that nothing should be banned. It's not that I was proven wrong, I'm upset that I'm going to be proven RIGHT. Nothing should have been banned. Nothing. Not stoneforge, and definately not Jace. Anyone could pick up Jund, Affinity, or Valukut and win with it. The same can certainly not be said of fae and cawblade. The more casual crowd has always been resentful of control stategies, but they are an integral part of the game that makes Magic what it is. Go play pokemon if all you want is a bunch of monsters fighting with no interruption.
Yes, let them quit. The ones that quit were probably not that dedicated anyway, and catering to these people who were going to quit in a year or two anyway just makes R+D dumb down magic. Let these people quit, let the more dedicated players get others into the game properly, and have a stronger community in the end. Natural selection.
Hmmm... lets see, ban 2 cards and make the majority happy, or continue to let attendance decline, letting thousands of potiential players (customers) never buy their products again.
I think Wizards made the right decision. It's 2 cards banned for the next few months. You'll live, even IF wizards was wrong.
They knew Jace 2.0 was overpowered when they printed him. However it was when Jund was dominating standard, where Bloodbraid Elf could care less about him. Why was Jund created? Faeries. The UB powerhouse that needed an enemy.

Jace probably shouldn't have been banned, banning him killed a lot of good fun decks that weren't super overpowered like cawblade. RUG was fun to play and a good deck, now it's dead. UB control got neutered. Traditional UW is in the same boat as UB. Basically they killed control as a competitive deck in standard. All in all it was a bad decision to ban him for the game. There are two very powerful combo decks in the format right now. I can't wait to see what happens when there's no viable deck to stop them.

"The smallest seed of regret can bloom into redemption."
Wizards banned SotF from Legacy after only 5 months of so-called "dominance." And it's most "dominant" month was when it accounted for a bit more than 18% of the Top 8s for an entire month. The average from the five months between GP: Columbus and it's banning in December 2010 was only a bit over 14% of all Top 8s.
Jace was accounting for anywhere from 50% of the field to 77% (I believe at GP: Dallas) of the field. Possibly more, but I don't pay too much attention to Standard (such a bad format, so unhealthy and stagnant). And as I recall, some Top 8s had 100% of the decks in the Top 8 running 4 JTMS. As soon as Jund and Oblivion Ring and Pithing Needle and Maelstrom Pulse and all the other stuff that could have easily dealt with Planeswalkers from Alara Block (and M10) rotated out, Jace should have been banned.

I was driven from this once-great site by abusive mods and admins, who create rules out of thin air to punish people for breaking them (meaning the rule does not exist under forum rules) and selectively enforce the rules that are written on the forum rules. I am currently lurking while deleting 6 years and 2 months of posting history. I will return when ExpiredRascals, Teia Rabishu and Blinking Spirit are no longer in power.
If there was substantial enough player dissatisfaction both with those who played JTMS and those who did not, then the the ban was justified in my mind because this was essentially the case. Time to start enjoying a more diverse format compared to what it was with JTMS.

Not everyone has the money to sink into a fantasy card game. So people being unable to spend 400+ (USD) on a deck are automatic whiners as well as casuals?

LOL. Wizards banned SFM and JTMS because of declining tournament attendance and Top 8 domination, not because they "take the "QQ Ban X Card threads seriously". If they really did, Bitterblossom and Bloodbraid Elf would have been banned a long time ago.
There is a huge gulf between believing nothing would be banned (saw stoneforge coming a mile away) and my position that nothing should be banned. I am glad you don't work for Wizards. The game would have died and they would have been bankrupt a long time ago. They were always very clear that they are catering to a wide variety of player types but are mostly favored to casual since they buy the most packs.
If you don't like where the game is going, why don't YOU take a break or just quit? Like, I dunno, what people did when they get tired of playing against Cawblade in tournaments

I see your point here and im not saying that I dont think they should have banned it but the same could be said (i.e. 'writing on the wall') for the Wizards crew when they created and then released the cards. Any experienced Magic player just takes one look at these cards and knows how powerful and game changing they will be. I certainly did the moment i laid eyes on Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge Mystic
I guess what im trying to say is, if they knew this (and how could they not have), why make them in the first place?? It's alogical.

Sure, thats a fair call - but should they have seen something of that ilk down the track given the nature of these cards (and their knoweldge of future sets and constructs?) They are the ones planning and creating these cards, besides, JTMS will be out of the T2 cycle soon enough anyway.
They knew Jace 2.0 was overpowered when they printed him. However it was when Jund was dominating standard, where Bloodbraid Elf could care less about him. Why was Jund created? Faeries. The UB powerhouse that needed an enemy.

As for the chain reaction: I understand how it happened and why it happened as well as why we need to reduce power level in sets. And with phyrexian obliterator and the swords and batterskull i have difficulty not seeing power creep even in scars but its not super blatant.
As for the game you describe, you make the crucial mistake of tapping out for jace 2.0 No, you leave manaleak mana open. The pressure of sword of feast and famine will require him to run out his spells early than he would like and all you need to do is counter them.
Jace, the Mind Sculper is out, but now we get this:
Most overpowered Jace so far in my opinion, I mean come on, Mill 10? Really?
You're pretty late to the party, and by far this is the worst Jace printed, worse than Jace 1.0 also. I'm not sure how you're able to say this is better than Jace 2
