I think a possible solution to flaming is to have an anonymous "thumbs down" button. Anonymous because we do not want to further push an argument, or end up resorting to childish name calling, flaming, insulting, or rudeness.
1) Would it help at all?
2) Would it create more problems than it fixes?
3) How would it be better done?
IMO, this creates many more problems than it solves, mostly because it doesn't solve any problems. Most people don't really notice or care about their "thanks" count, so why would they notice or care about "thumbs down"? Also, the anonymous nature opens this up too much for harassment for those few who do care about reputation, as you'll have "downvote fairies" go through and thumbs down everything someone has ever posted when they're upset.
We're not reddit, but we also don't really want to be.
