One of the major problems with MTGnews is/was the use of nepotism in deciding major issues and positions within the forums. I would love to see these new forums form a constitution so there are rules that all must follow.
Also I would like to see elected moderators as well as a type of governmental body.

I want the people to be a major influence on this website. It's a forum's populace that make it what it is, it should be atleast partially up to them where it goes.
Where moddship is concerned, we have a staff right now, and I want to stay with that staff as I believe they will do their jobs well and know what they're doing. As Salvation continues to grow, there will surely be a need for more staff, and upon reaching that point, we will let people vote.
If any major decision regarding this website arrises, we will ask the people what they think, and let them vote on it. There will be, as always, sometimes where a democratic vote will be out of the question because we believe there is no other way to do something, but any time at all anything happens or is taking place that calls for the people's opinion, their opinion will be heard.
I agree that a complete democracy could not work, I see this being best run like my school (I go to a VERY different school...) At my school any and every decision is voted on, and suggestions are always throughly examined, but the teachers (staff) can veto, but only in an emergency. I have found that with this sort of a system it creates a feeling of self pride that helps a community, for example, our school has been open for something like 6 years now, and not a single veto has been used. People are a lot more responsible when you trust them.

Internet forums really cannot be run as a democracy. At a basic level, a certain amount of dictatorship is needed to run an effective forum.
MTGNews appears to have been taken out through corruption in high places more than administrative abuse. If the person on top doesn't care, then nothing gets done. That has nothing to do with forum administration, and if that happens, the site will just die in due course no matter how the forums are structured.
The best way to keep a community around has more to do with the member base itself. If the people want the community to stay around, it will. The URL the community has is generally irrelevant.
I have looked into and yes a complete democracy in a forum is impossible, but elected officials would be a nice idea. And a constitution would be a great thing to have for the site to survive.
Democracy is awesome, and I really hope we can go through with voting on things as much as possible. These forums were created as a place we could all gather - for the users. Unless server costs arise or theres special circumstances, I doubt they'll have much advertising at all, so no real money is really involved. They've already spent sleepless nights working on getting us what we wanted, even if we didnt really need it. With all that in mind, I'd say they would do what we really wanted even if there wasn't a specific vote for it.
However, not everything can be democratic. Voting to ban people, for example, would just turn into popularity contests, at the expence of fairness. Democracy does have its limits in places like this, and defining those limits will be the hard part. I'm sure there will be some trial and error, but everything will be better for it in the long run.
I understand that the forum structure has to be run from the top down for obvious reasons, but couldn't the Admin at least leave a bit of choice open to the public? Perhaps making a plebiscite-like poll that gave a say to the users would be a good way to get the community involved in the decision making process without allowing total anarchy. I think this website is an example of why the first amendment shouldn't exist in a forum. I think that this is the case because if you don't like how an admin/mod/owner is treating you, do what was done here: leave the site. I think that Modding is a very important job that keeps unwanted spammers/flamers/idiots off of the forum, and the power to ban, warn and delete messages is an important power for them to be able to excercize, which should not be taken away by the illusion of "democratic elections".
i think the council sounds like a really good idea, but the people popular enough and with desire to be on such a council are prolly just going to be the mods and admins who came here from mtgnews anyway, right? i think the idea is great, but i think that we already have that in the new mods and admins for this site. We've all seen what can happen when the top fails, and the guys on the top here are not about to let that be repeated anytime soon. I think we're in good hands.
I dont think that making everything democratic would work, but if we could get one or two community elected mods, that would be cool. The Mods now are already doing amazing asking the community about their ideas and wants, and I think everything is doing great right now.
On another note this is exactly how the U.S. was formed, after tyranny by King George, they wanted a democracy so noone could abuse power. Funny how 200+ years later people have the same reaction.:wierd4:

No longer staff here.
I like that type of idea. Members voted by peers to put their imput into the forums, a democratic republic just like our own.
A constitution would be nice to prevent forums treachery which we have experienced in mtgnews.
edit: oh, and democracy is pimp
new beginnings, new opportunities
