Back on MTGnews, i had a ppd between 20 and 25 for quite a long time.
Anyway, as for the problems people have with the custom tag system, why not let everyone have custom tag? Or let everyone have custom tag after a relatively insignificant number of posts like 5 or 10 or something like that. That way there'd definitely be no spamming to get to tag and it's entirely objective.
Because custom tags are only meant for the 31337 and you're not worthy of respect unless you have one.
I'd say go w/ the MT '500' posts for a custom. This way, people can still get a custom while posting at a steady paced-out-pace and post well thought out posts and those who are only here for customs don't have to post 20-30 times a day in the games forum.
I used to have about 25-30 ppd at 'News. That took a hell of a lot of Trivia.
In fact, I believe approx. 1000 out of 3000 of my posts were in that forum.
Personally, I did that for the high scores and fun.
I also got a kick out of racing TFE and Stax to custom for a little bit.

500 is good for MT because MT is a much smaller community. It takes a while to get to 500 there, despite blatant spamming being allowed.
Of course, many people get banned there a lot quicker too. Not too sure where I was going with this...
Blatant spamming is allowed? People get banned for that *cough* Musteval *cough*
I'm not too sure I've ever made a post there other than a decklist that wasn't pretty spammy. I just don't post there often enough for people to notice it, I suppose.

I guess the definition of spam varies. There, it's "any post that isn't productive or funny."
my suggestion: move post count to profiles, but retain custom. that way, if you really cared, you could go and check, and you don't have to flaunt around your massive e-***** for attention. new people could judge on quality, not quantity.
I was told today that this kid on my team called 911 twice this morning and hung up both times. They called back and his dad answered. The reason the kid called 911? He got an erection and didn't know what to do. I wish I was making this up.

Spam is spam. If someone manages to post 100 posts a day but still have meaningful content in them that isn't post-upping, let them do it. Although more often than not a fair number could be considered "spammy". Judge on content not quantity.

You're obviously an ignorant conservative. I blame your hill-billy Mom and Dad.
What I think should happen is a point system. Over on another message board I frequent they have had a point system (You can name it whatever you want, theirs is called Bells). For each post you make you get a Bell. You can give bells to other people with the "donate" feature. But the big thing is, instead of getting titles and such when you get post counts, you buy titles, ranging from only 50 bells for a one week title, to 3000 bells for a permanent title, and you can also buy other special features with your bells. This is a PHBB hack, so I don't see why salvation couldn't install it.
Now, I propose that (In my idea) Salvation installs this system. Each post is worth a Mana (Or whatever the staff wants to name it). Each article is worth 1-100 mana depending on quality. You can buy things such as Titles with your Mana, ranging from a few days, to a few months to permanent titles. You could also buy things such as a special high-quality banner from Alex or something.
The other thing thats big at this other site is their forum games. You see, with the Bells system, some games you pay bells to enter and then the bells go toward the prize. Imagine 3CB like this: everyone pays 5 mana to enter... no big deal right? But if you get 40 people, then thats a 200 mana prize, divided through first second and third! Or what about card contests with prizes? The list goes on and on!
I think that this is a cool idea, especially because i've seen it work for other sites in the past, and its worked very well!

This has only come out well on one board I was at, ever. Honestly, it leads to even MORE spamming, because now people want teh $.
As long as staff members do their job and enforce spamming, it shouldn't cause any problems. Plus, if someone goes on a spamming spree, you can always have rules where staff take away your points.

I was on a forum with that same system, cept they called it "gold." However, for the enforcement part, moderaters were given infiite (it was alwayd displayed as some wierd long random number, but it was infinite) gold, and they had the power to give and take gold as they pleased. So they could strip spamers of everything, and reward players for doing something cool. Then each post=1 gold, each thread=5, and if some1 posted some crazy good article or strategy or sometin, a mod would just give him like a thousand gold or someting.
To take it a step furthure, the forum ran a bank and lottery. Bank was, you put your money in, and it would colect intrest, then when you took it out they would take a certain percent from it. Lotery was where you payed 50 gold for a tiket and if you won you got some 1k gold or something.
This system worked very well, and their were very few spamers.

as has been said, this system presents more problems than it fixes - more mod haughtyness, more spamming (imagine getting 5 posts from simply starting a thread!)
my system would decrease spamming and mod involvement and work, while yours would increase both.
I have to agree with Titus - any system that promotes posting will promote spamming, even if properly modded. The problem is that those systems require a significant amount of modding, and it's not really fair to the mods, in my opinion.
Let's step back a little and do some analysis... (Hey, it's what I do! :tongue2: )
Do people who constructively post do so because it ++'s their post count? Or do they do it because they enjoy contributing to whatever it is they are contributing to? I'd suggest that it's the latter - most people who constructively post do so because they enjoy doing it, not because it ups their count. Given that, what's the purpose of the post count? Is it just asthetic, something "cool" for people who like to compete with others? That's a legitimate reason, if you enjoy competition (and I get the impression that a lot of folks here do enjoy competition). If it's about competition, maybe there's a more appropriate way to fulfill that need that doesn't force those of us (such as myself) who aren't interested in competition into the fire.
If it's about something else, let's look at that. For people who like the labels/post counts (and/or the various things that have been suggested as alternatives), why do you like it? What is it that makes it attractive?
If we can figure out what the benefits are, maybe we can find a way to implement something that is useful to people who are interested in that kind of thing without making everyone else have to pay for it (due to spamming, etc.).
The only time I ++ is when I'm about to reach a multiple of 100, I don't know why it just seems like the thing to do

I don't think that the high posters are THAT big of a deal.....but I will mention this angle.....
I think that a problem that could arise is intimidation towards new members. I say this because when they see a high post count.....for say extremeicon.....they might get the feeling that he's 'superior' and always ahs stuff to say about things. In reality, the post count doesn't really count towards anything 'constructive' to strictly magic discussion. I know it sounds kinda vague as to what I'm thinking....you may need to be on the same wave length. If anyone would like I could try to clear it up.
I guess one method to avoid this is to have Magic-relevant post counts separate from Non-Magic-relevant post counts. This way people can get an understanding of how much certain members have contributed to the environment and where.
By no means am I insulting extremeicon this way.....but he only has that many post because of the forum games.....not anything 'constructive' to magic discussions. He posts once, maybe twice for some threads, and only more if the thread evolves into 6 plus pages.
I'm not complaining myself about the post counts, but I think it may be a bit intimidating to new members. Such as, they may be less likely to contribute to the conversation if they were going to openly disagree with someone with a high post-count, because it gives a false message of 'superiority', which we don't want that at all; especially to be necessarily recognized.
Also.....I think we can all agree that extremeicon is most likely going to be the top poster for.....ever. So why bother mentioning it on the MTGSalvation homepage?

I don't usually step on toes here, because I am fairly new. However, titus mentioned extremeicon as being a problem. Quite frankly, that offends me. He's a friend of mine, and incredibly intelligent. If he's posting a lot, it's because he has something important to say, or he's playing in the game room. He also works full time, paints, draws, plays ultimate frisbee, and spends time with his wife and their families. He in no way has "no life".
I'm sure most of the high posters have the same lifestyle. And please...24 posts is high? I can clear 24 posts in an hour, if I'm really on a role in the game room. Seriously. This whole thread seems like an outlet for useless *****ing. Leave the drama where it's necessary. These guys are not bothering you, not hurting anyone else, and simply enjoying themselves speaking their minds or expressing their creativity.
Give it a rest. If anyone else said this same thing, I apologize for redundancy, but I wasn't going to read four pages of *****ing and moaning before I posted. I also just realized that my whole ranting session may be moot considering the last post was April 2nd. Ah well. I vented. All is well.
Considering we're all here because of a game--Magic:The Gathering--that which involves games interests me the most. I find it ironic that some people are complaining about others playing too many games here. I really only post in other areas if I feel that I have something important or entertaining to say.
Who cares? Seriously, who cares about a user's PPD? Don't come complaining about the number of posts, complain about the quality of posts or don't complain at all. If I have 100 posts worth of intelligent, interesting, relevant material, who cares if I post it all during the same day or if I spread it out over several days?
This isn't a competition. You don't win a prize for having a high PPD, and it doesn't cost you anything if another user has a high PPD unless it's spam...and if it's spam, it doesn't matter if it's one post or fifty posts, because it's spam either way you look at it.
I really should have just turned post counts off like I thought about doing when I started the place. I'll never understand why post counts should be considered important or a status symbol on a freaking message board on the internet.
Because custom tags are only meant for the 31337 and you're not worthy of respect unless you have one.
