Er Xen has a custom tag .... He didn't want a custom tag he wanted a special unique coloured tag.
Tags are only given to staff.
Customs are given at a much lower rate than normal because everyone wants them.
In fact puzzle I just noticed you should have 1
Correction, tags are only given to staff and writers.
Also shouldn't this have been closed on Necro?
Anyway I have stated my opinion and basicly I am on the fence. It seems like you can not get rid of both. If you get rid of post counts then you should still have it as an internal counter and gives customs at 1000. If you get rid of 1000 for custom then keep post counts.
Well... if the arguement is to get rid of the post count because you don't care about it... then, why do you care about it enough to remove it? If you don't think it matters... just ignore it. I haven't ever seen someone say 'I [blank] because you don't have as many posts as [blank2]'. If you find it unimportant, treat it as such.

Banana of the Month Feb '05 Cool stuff here.
I don't really know extremeicon that well. The reason his post count is so high is because he plays the forum games quite a bit. I have never seen him post spam, and his answers to games questions are always funny and usually correct. I can't fault him for being an avid gamer. Its why we're all here. What I would propose would be to split up the post counts between Discussions/Games. Since games go much faster make it 2000 posts in games to get a custom tag or 500 discussion posts. You can even go to the point of making spam a 5 post penalty. That should curb the spammers (although I can picture some people competing for the highest negative post count). You could even give people 2 custom tag lines. If they want both, they have to fulfil both the requirements. Then you would have basically 3 levels of custom tags. People with games tags (who would be looked up to in the games forums), people with discussion tags (who would be looked up to in discussion forums), and people with both. Don't know how much programming it would take, but maybe you could make the tags only viewable in the forums that they were earned in. Any thoughts?
My posting was to try and appease the people who are annoyed about others posting a lot. I have days with high post counts and days where is seems like I just lurk and don't post at all. The first part of my post backs up extreme.
I know that some people get really worked up about their post counts, but it seems kinda like a ***** size thing to me (not to diss the girls around here).
People, you are not your post count. People may judge you by it, but it's no big deal.
On the other hand, getting rid of the post count (or making it invisible) may be a good idea, if it means stopingthreads like this from existing...
@votan- no problem, i just didn't know if i had explained myself completely or not.
@solace- i see how that might be, but the idea was that if people look to others with high post count (as i did when I first started) it would be beneficial to know what they achieved that high number in. Someone with over a thousand posts in the games forums might not be the best person to listen to in the rulings forum, you know? I figured between that and the high penalty for posting, spam wouldn't be a problem (who wants to lose 5 posts for a single instance of spam) but you would be able to keep the "reward" of custom tags for high (read experienced) posters. I know post count is considered e-***** comparison, but new people really do look to others for answers and a visible post count is a good way to tell who the most experienced person is.

For better or for worse, this type of thread will always be around. Maybe not about post counts, but someone will always want something changed in the forums.
@draygn_mage: Your idea is interesting, but would require a lot of programming, and really shouldn't be limited to just those two forums. What about strategy? Avatar/sig designing? Custom card creation? The list goes on... what might be a better way is to simply list somewhere what each member's most active forum is.
In general, I think that if some people want to use post counts as an "e-*****," there's no reason to get rid of it just because of that. They're usually the type of person whose judgement doesn't mean much anyways. Leave it there for them, the rest of us can ignore it or use it as something to celebrate every now and then.

Well... if they did that, there'd just be two post counts. :winky: If some people've got a problem with one, I don't think two is the solution.
