Well, IMO, he probably should get a warning or something with a reason to why his thread was deleted.
(not that I know anything about what his threads were, or whatever, so maybe just deleting them was the best course, but a warning with the rule broken, guessing spam, seems reasonable)
Do you need them to do that to understand why your thread was deleted? It doesn't seem so to me.
The 'randomly' there strikes me as blatantly false, wouldn't you agree?
Yes I do actually, I don't see why some of them were deleted. I guess everything is SERIOUS BUSINESS in the rumor mill or something?
ran-dom:
proceeding, made, or occurring without definite aim, reason, or pattern
To me it is random since I don't see the reason they are being deleted.
I can accept that it was deleted if the mod tells me what I did wrong. At least don't let me come back 2 days later expecting to check up on my thread only to have no clue where it has gone.
EDIT: It was a thread in the rumor mill asking if anyone else was happy when they saw the spoiler was at 25 only to realize that it was all basic lands. It wasn't disruptive or anything, just some people chuckling at themselves about falsely believing that so many cards had been spoiled.
To me it is random since I don't see the reason they are being deleted.
What {mikeyG} is saying is that there was a GOOD REASON why your threads were deleted, and again without knowing what they were, I can only guess that he is right.
Its not 'random' if it was clear that they did not belong. (and, yes, the rumor mill is more or less the heart of this site, so they do take it seriously, like they should)

Well, now I know {mikeyG} was right. Can't say I'm surprised.
You're very luckily you did not get an infraction for that. Not being able to whine about the spoiler is clearly spelled out in the rules. The cards will go up when they are found, complaining will not make it go faster. (and the basic lands this time around are COOL! I was exited to see them on the spoiler)

Didn't take long for the butthurt use of 'SERIOUS BUSINESS' did it?
Anyway, the Mill is a busy place as I'm sure you know. During rumor season, the staff has upwards of a thousand or more posts to deal with each day. So unless a post is particularly exceptional in the way it breaks the rules, we typically delete the post to trim out disruption in the forum. With that much going on, we don't like to leave messes that tens of thousands of people have to sift through.
And yes, we do take the 'Mill seriously. We kinda have to since it's this site's reason for being. Would you rather we didn't take the job of maintaining order seriously?

Oh, that's your problem - you didn't read the Rumor Mill Guidelines. This occurred with definite aim and purpose: to get rid of crap that doesn't belong in the Rumor Mill. And your thread about how lightheaded you got when you saw 25/249 for the Zen spoiler was most certainly not a rumor and thus did not belong in the Mill.
This isn't about whether or not my thread was against the rules. It's about the fact that I just want to know when my thread is deleted rather than sifting through the forum pages wondering where it went.
Give me an infraction, I just want to have notice. If it's too much because there are too many posts in the mill then fine, I just figured that since this is the "speak your mind" forum I would post about how I think an aspect of the forum could be improved. You don't have to take my advice, I'm not a mod and I don't know how hard it is to keep up with moderating a forum.
Give me an infraction, I just want to have notice.
You probably should have asked for my earlier suggestion of a warning.
If they have deleted 3 of your threads, you might have just asked them to suspend you. (3 infractions = a suspension)
I think you might just want to re-read the Rumor Mill Guidelines and walk this one off.
{mikeyG} just told you why you got your thread deleted, do you really think more info in the form of a warning or infraction is needed?
Well, I am sure they delete a lot of threads per-day. It would be difficult for them to remember to infract YOU out of everyone. (but now they might)
Remember, they really have to try to be constant. If their policy is to simply delete the threads, but they have a different policy for YOU, it would be kind of hard. I think you're in the minority of wanting an infection for that kind of thing. I'm sure if they gave out infractions for 'questionable' threads, in addition to deleting them, they would get a lot more complaints.
Don't you think it would be easier for all parties involved if you just re-read the rules, and considered this your insight to what happened to your thread, and what will probably happen to others that violate the rules?

Once again, I was just "speaking my mind". I know personally I would rather find an unread message when I log on instead of having to search for my nonexistent thread, but apparently that isn't possible so I'll just have to deal with it.
@mikeyG: I don't know why you have to be so condescending.

Well, it comes down to easier for YOU vs easier for them.
@mikeyG: I don't know why you have to be so condescending.
In response (and obliquely in explanation), I'll turn that around: I don't know why you and the hundreds of users like you get confused when things happen to them as a result of breaking rules they didn't bother to read (or heed) in the first place.
I don't even know why it's so bothersome to him that the spoiler said 24 and 20 of those were lands... is this his first Rumor Season here? That's to be expected.
I don't even know why it's so bothersome to him that the spoiler said 24 and 20 of those were lands... is this his first Rumor Season here? That's to be expected.
It wasn't bothersome I was just laughing at myself for getting so excited because I forgot that obviously they were lands.
If a mod thinks my thread is off topic could you at least message me after you delete it so I'm not just left in the dust wondering where it went?
I'm guessing that most posts which end up deleted would be pretty self-explanatory. If you've had multiple posts of yours deleted, then there's probably something you've missed in the rules. It might be helpful to read or re-read them. To be fair though, if the mods find themselves deleting multiple posts from the same user, it might be a good idea to send a PM to the user, as LogicX suggests. This might help decrease future problems.
I think you're in the minority of wanting an infection for that kind of thing.
I'm not trying to make fun of you but that's the funniest type-o I've seen in a while. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm leaving MTGS when mods gain the ability to pass out infections.
This post is spammy and generally useless. This is your third infraction in as many days so your account is suspended for one week. Also, you now have herpes.
Sincerely,
The Mods of MTGS
i think that alot of people are missing the point of this thread. he simply wants "in the future" for everyone to have a notification of when their thread was deleted and why.
i believe that if i were to break the law and get arrested, i have every right to know why i was arrested even if it was blatently obvious (car jacking, assault, murder). because it is quite frankly possible that those people didn't think that what they were doing was wrong in the first place.
in all seriousness, if you can't write a simple message to someone that you deleted their thread, then you really shouldn't be in a position where you can delete threads in the first place.
it just doesn't seem right to me. its like a court judge giving a jail sentence without actually having a court hearing or whatnot.
in all seriousness, if you can't write a simple message to someone that you deleted their thread, then you really shouldn't be in a position where you can delete threads in the first place.
I don't believe you really understand the reality of the situation. Do you know how many posts I delete in a day thanks to the Rumor Mill? Dozens. Several dozens during the really busy peak time the week or two before a prerelease. Now, I could sit here and type out a message to every poster whose posts I deleted, but that strikes me as a rather inefficient use of my time on here. I have several other busy sections of the forum to moderate, administrative duties to attend to and a desire to actually participate in discussions here. To do as you propose, I'd have to either spend even more time on the site or sacrifice other areas of the time I spend on here. And for whom? The rulebreaker who wouldn't have his posts deleted if he'd just simply read the rules? The poster who didn't even bother to check the forum before posting a redundant thread? The poster who couldn't muster the effort to post his own I deas so he just quoted someone else and said 'this'?
then hire someone who will do that for you, or find some auto reply function of some sorts. don't just neglect your duties.
there are plenty of bots out there designed specificly for that type of stuff. i get around 5 a day on the phone. even a simple "hello this is an official notice that your thread~"thread name"~was deleted today at "delete time". then, if you really want to stretch it, insert acouple words as to why it was deleted.

Users are already complaining of mods being cold, distant, and impersonal (right in another cute little thread next to this very one). They take their time to write to people personally. Do you want them to get all artificial and automatic? Mods want people to understand why they were infracted so it doesn't happen again. They're willing to discuss the issues personally. I think it's wonderful and it should stay that way.
But, of course, there's the argument that whoever complained about mods sounding bot-like had no idea what he was talking about.
and now we are back to the "if you don't have the time to write a simple messege, then you shouldn't be here in a mod position in the first place.
in all seriousness, is just deleting something the correct solution to peoples problems?
just deleting and ignoring a late notice on a bill doesn't solve the problem. do it enough the government will start knocking on your doorstep.
now is where I quote uncle ben. "with great power comes great responsability."
I suppose that all depends on what you define as my duties. Firing off explanatory PMs every time I deleted a post would be a required task if you felt that my duties included holding the hand of every member that required moderator action.
I don't.
My duties stem from maintaining order. Making sure each individual user is aware of every rule is not really part of that. Or at least not one I find it practical to indulge. My role is to ensure that those who break rules do not do so again via punishment and the implied threat of further punishment for future rule breakage.
Personally, I'd love to be able to personally ensure that every member is well aware of all of our policies, but that is wildly impractical. Especially given that we organize all the policies in handy little stickies. We have a reasonable expectation that everyone has read the rules, it's your duty to make sure that you have, not mine. My duty is to punish you when you break a rule. And to punish you again if you break the rule again. If you don't read or heed the rules, I can't do much about that beyond letting you know when you've done wrong. If someone doesn't take the hint and check the rules after a warning or a deleted post, I can't help them.
But back to the topic at hand. The deletion policy operating in the Mill is there for one very simple reason: the insane volume of posts in that section would be impossible to moderate otherwise. And given that at least 60% of all Rumor Mill posts fail to meet my standards (some would say I'm being generous in saying 40% meet or exceed those standards), infracting every single one would be a nightmare. So we infract the worst and delete the rest. Trust me when I say I wish I could infract every post I felt deserved it (I even vowed to do exactly that when I took the Mill position on), but there honestly isn't enough time in a day. And then even if I did somehow pull it off, we'd have a tsunami of pissed off Rumor Pigs flipping out because we're oppressive.
Deletion is a quicker way of dealing with the problem and allows me to retain my sanity.
But if I had to message everyone whose posts I deleted, I might as well have just infracted them. It'd take the same amount of time and effort.
I've never been to a forum before where threads randomly disappear with no explanation.
Do you need them to do that to understand why your thread was deleted? It doesn't seem so to me.
The 'randomly' there strikes me as blatantly false, wouldn't you agree?
