Wait, why are we assuming that Galvatron had a disability? The next time that someone gets an infraction for flaming should we assume that he has a disability and can't play nicely with others?
Even with a disability, 3 is more than enough. I DO have a spelling disability, and I have never gotten an warning or infraction for spelling, since I TRY.
He was given 3 chances, without consideration of his disability. Given consideration of this handicap, he may have been given extra leeway with his spelling and grammar and he may not have had been suspended to begin with.
The disability you think he may have?
Again, as a person with experience in this area, it just takes effort. IF he had a disability, he wasn't willing to put in the effort around here. So, if he's not putting in any effort to overcome his "disability" you think he MIGHT have, why would you so viciously defend someone you don't know, who wasn't kind or considerate to anyone?
Oh, and if you, as you stated, want to look at us "differently" because we have a disability, feel free, we still put in our time around here, more than Galvatron could have said. Funny how you're not defending the rest of people with disabilities around here that work so hard to keep our posts up to par.
Even with a disability, 3 is more than enough. I DO have a spelling disability, and I have never gotten an warning or infraction for spelling, since I TRY.
Exactly. All it takes is effort.

Amazing Avy & Sig by mchief111 @ Rising Studios [4/22/11]
This whole paragraph makes little to no sense. Incredible. Could we start handing out infractions for senseless posting too?
The case was straightforward. I can't see how it's even being discussed.
Reading comprehension is key. If you punish a child enough with the exact same punishment, eventually the effect wears off. It's not difficult to grasp.
However nobody could comprehend the majority of what Galvatron said, which is why this banning occurred. I feel that the reason of bad spelling is rather poor, but if Galvatron was indeed suspended several times before I have no sympathy for him.
Reading through these posts, i feel that this ban is justified, but ridiculously stupid, kind of like those stories about a robber breakin into a house, slipping on a knife, and sueing the owners for negelence. (I am not sure who to side with, but leaning a bit towards the mods after reading samples of his posts)
I think what is comes down to is, the mods are backing up each other because they need to. If even one mod disagreed with any of the admins on the banning, there would be no support for that mod for the entire argument.
That being said, i don't think the reason that users against the banning are upset because he was banned, i think they are upset because of the way Annorax made fun of him as he banned him. I realize that the thread can be used to make humor of a serious situation, but honestly, that was just cruel and mean and uncalled for Annorax, especially if the speculation is true that he does have a mental problem. And even if he doesn't, i would have expected better from an admin. Especially one that claims to be a grammer nazi. What would have been wrong with just posting:
"Gavaltron was banned for repeated poor spelling, and blatantly refusing to change even after being warned by admins/mods to pick up his act." Much better, and easiar to read.
final note: MikeyG is an awesome guy on these forums (even though i don't know him in real life)
I think what is comes down to is, the mods are backing up each other because they need to.
I don't think for one second that any of the staff that have posted in this thread said anything they don't believe. The staff doesn't expect any individual mod to lie on behalf of the staff. We do expect everyone to present a united front as much as we can, you're right, but we don't ask that anyone lie to maintain that front. That would be a bit much.

The staff has a history of taking something of a parting shot when a particularly notorious member takes a hike, typically by lampooning whatever behavior made that member notorious in the first place.
Is it a little cheap? Totally is, but if we can't take a little satisfaction in getting rid of problematic posters, what can we take satisfaction in? (that was said jokingly, btw)

Now, in the mod lounge (if that really exists) they could say: "On no, that was a terrible decision," but on a decision that apparently has a lot of intrest with the users, you mods would stick together in public, imo.

Ive seen the currently suspended/banned thread and while i admit that some our funny (and appropriate, expecially with gimmick creators) i feel that this one was a step too far.
I think an angle that hasn't really been thought of is that while maybe this is a ******** way to get banned, how hard is it to follow the rule really? They aren't asking much here IMO. If you had a crazy boss that doesn't want you to carry change in your pocket because he doesn't like to hear it jingle, maybe thats a messed up rule, but you aren't going to put your job on the line because it's easy enough to follow.

Yeah. But that's still a few steps beyond what we're asking here. We're not asking users to use the Oxford comma or get an infraction, or to avoid typos on pain of death - we're asking that posts at least try to be made coherent. :x
The "try to" is important. Foreign-language speakers that screw up, they're at least trying. Members who tell us "no, I'm above your rules" don't get leeway.
And that's really the issue he was banned for: Posting gibberish after being told to put effort into making his posts readable, not just for posting gibberish to begin with.

Well, the point I was trying to make is that it's not that hard to just not walk around with change in your pocket. Whether or not the rule itself is dumb shouldn't really be much of an issue because the rule is not asking much.
This community is not specifically focused in the US. We have lots of member from both English-Speaking countries and non. Is it fair to the non-native speakers to try and figure out what Galv was trying to say?
Overall though, I think this thread has strayed far from the original argument.
It's disheartening to see that people are STILL using the "he got x warnings and didn't listen to the mods" line of argument, when it was clear that none of us arguing against this ban were debating that issue. Galvatron obviously deserved to be banned under the current rules. The issue I have is that the rule is stupid and should not exist in the first place.
I also think a lot of this has to do with the fact that galvatron wasn't a particularly well liked poster. I doubt most of us are going to miss galvatron, but that doesn't make it right to just ban him. And I'm worried that someone with actually good ideas and poor spelling or typing could get banned in the future.
Mostly I just think bans are being thrown around a bit too casually. This is an MTG forum where people just want to discuss things and have fun. I don't think it's the mods place to be playing grammar police and telling people to "improve themselves" in such a casual setting.
EDIT: But I do agree that this thread has basically been a massive waste of time. I just wish people would look at these rules objectively instead of mindlessly backing the mods on every issue.
It wasn't really intended to be flaming, I'm just frustrated. It seems like every time an issue like this that is worth debating comes out, tons of members come out of the woodwork and just parrot everything the mods say. This site can improve, but it's not going to happen if people just accept every rule the mods institute.
It was a late edit that I probably shouldn't have put in, and I've gotten way too worked up over this incredibly minor issue.
While spinning in my office chair for a collective eight hours at work today, I gave some thought to the situation. I came up with one idea that I think has some merit.
Every forum section here can have a sub-forum for Galvatron. For the game and tournaments sections, it can be called "The Last Table." In humor and forum games it can be called "The Short Bus." In the debate section it can be called "Debate" and in introduce yourself it can be called "Walmart Greeter."
Galvatron can post in his own subforum pertaining to the context within and Cyan can translate it to the main forum for us.

I have a feeling you are talking a little about me. Because I have had a bit of a "well, those are the rules" attitude on this issue.
You seem to imply that allowing complete freedom (when it comes to language and grammar) with posting is obviously the better choice. I say that both sides have a decent argument. The mods happen to err on the side that restricts language, and you err on the other side.
sorry for some of this being a little late, but i've been largely off the computer for the past two days, and this thread has exploded from humble beginnings.
These forums apparently would not be good enough for men like e.e cummings, John Clare and Galvatron.
i disagree on the e.e. cummings theory. you may look to my 2,500+ post history as evidence against that part of your hypothesis.
for the record, only one mod (who isn't here anymore) had ever commented to me on the matter of my lack of capitalization. he was kind enough to ask me nicely, and i complied with his request to the letter. (pun intended)
my lack of capitalization has to do largely with my manner of typing, which i developed when i was doing computer programming back in the '80's (yes, this means i am old). capitalization wasn't all that crucial (and some machines didn't even really support lowercase letters), and shifting in all the proper capitals slows me down tremendously. however, were i told that continued usage of these forums would hinge on whether or not i capitalized correctly in my posts, i would (very begrudgingly) comply, or accept that i could not post here anymore.
would it be silly? yes. but, this is not my forum; i must respect its rules, either by adhering to them or leaving the site, or they will force me to respect the rules by suspending or banning me - which is also part of the rules.
A)It's not reasonable to make this request of Galvatron. He is mentally incapable of complying.
if that is the case, then he shouldn't be here. look, i work with kids with mental disabilities (one of whom is also my brother). i see some of them try VERY hard in order to be successful... and some who just don't care. the ones who try are the ones who move past it, go on to college, and become successful in spite of their disability; the ones who don't will continue to suffer in their disability, and many of those kids are the ones who don't really "get" that they have difficulties.
he cannot get a job that requires any kind of reading/writing..for obvious reasons. He's not lazy, he just can't learn proper language skills.
well, given this, we should let him come here and post nearly-unintelligible posts, why, exactly? because we feel sorry that he's got a problem he himself refuses to acknowledge? i can't go for that.
I don't get why people care enough about this to want Galvatron banned and why everyone seems to be getting behind a rule that is obviously stupid and arbitrary.
because, as i and many others have said repeatedly in this thread, forums are based on written communication. if you have trouble writing, and we can help you (cf. our non-native english speakers), we will. if we can recommend help to you (as taylor and others have done), we will. however, in both cases, the person with the problem has to accept the help. galvatron repeatedly and brazenly ignored the suggestion.
Let's say that being fat was theoretically banned in the rules.
for the record... worst theoretical EVAR. being fat has nothing to do with your ability to communicate intelligibly on the internet. having a mental deficiency, and not being willing to acknowledge the problem, does affect your ability to communicate.
it IS someone's fault - galvatron's! as you said, "he has never wanted to face his condition/problem/whatever, and this is only another example of that. I can't exactly blame him, his life must be as frustrating as possible." the only thing that i, or my fellow teachers, do NOT accept from our students is a lack of trying to work past their disabilities. i could tell you stories of young men who work hard every day to get through their difficulties... and i can assure you that the kids i work with are similar to, or worse than, galvatron seemed to me through his posts.
If you can't follow rules, you can't be part of activity you are trying to be.
QFT. we do this in our program all the time. kids who play sports and are troublemakers ride the pine, and, if they don't shape up, they are kicked off the team.
If Galvatron was banned for consistent improper use of grammar, then why isn't God of Cyanide? By his own admission(or you could just read any of his posts), he doesn't use capitalization. Ever. A mod apparently requested that he do so, but he does not. Is this not the same 'flagrant disregard of the rules' that Galvatron was banned for?
I see no difference in these two circumstances.
Just in case it's not abundantly clear, I don't actually want god of cyanide to get into trouble here. I like him, and enjoy reading his posts. I just thought that this was a great example of exactly how asinine and ridiculous such a rule is in the first place, and the complete lack of consistency in it's execution.
Not in this circumstance, they are not. As was so eloquently stated by MikeyG, here is the rule:
Repeated Bad Spelling and/or Grammar
Continuous bad grammar, "text speak" or bad spelling in posts will not be tolerated. If English is not your first language and you use some words or grammar out of place, or you occasionally make mistakes don't worry. Only members who consistently make no effort to communicate clearly will get an Infraction.
Never using a capital letter is 'continuous bad grammar'. The argument that the Mods have made all throughout this is that Galvatron was banned because A)he violated this rule repeatedly and B)it was requested that he make a better effort, and he did not.
God of Cyanide is guilty of both of these things. If one is deserving of a banning, then so is the other. That's it.
