101-999 posts: you've seen infractons and warnings handed down and you become afraid of them
I have more than 300 posts (not much), but I never was warned/infracted. Maybe because I afraid of being infracted for spam, and therefore don't respond in three words, or maybe because I dont know offensive words. I don't trade to boot.
The problem is that the mods are apparently issued no clear-cut definitions of what is and isn't wrong, and we have situations where Mod "A" will let it pass and Mod "B" starts handing out infractions.
Also, I believe certain mods are too quick to hand out infractions. For example, "backseat modding," which is absolutely retarded. In pretty much every other internet forum that has a high amount of traffic, users that take the time to just say "hey, that discussion really belongs in this forum over here" are considered assets to the site. Over here a mod is always ready to jump out and hit them with an infraction. How juvenile and lame is that? "You tried to help, we're going to punish you for it." How many people that might have become solid contributors to discussions have been driven off by that piece of stupidity?
And I'm not even saying to drop the "backseat moderation" rule, I'm just asking that the mods be told to use some common damned sense. Take a lesson from Board Game Geek, which has a very clean forum as well. They don't publicly humiliate users with red text, especially for something small. A private message of "hey, don't do this, here's the rule" works just as well. Granted, it doesn't let the mods show their e-peen off, but if that's the person's attitude they shouldn't be a mod in the first place.
Please refrain from using "retarded" in this context.
I'll say my hypothesis on a subject that could help explain a little bit.
0-100 posts: your new and any warning or infraction could set you off
101-999 posts: you've seen infractons and warnings handed down and you become afraid of them
1000-2499 posts: Infractions and Warnings dont bother you as much, you take them and correct the offending behavior.
2500+ posts: you've survived this long (). Here is the stage where the mods may not be as tough on you. You've been around long enough and while you really know the rules, the mods do have precedent as to how you are and it may influence there decision. new posters may see this, and it leads them to be infuriated.
Uh, no. I've never received a warning (Let alone an infraction) because I have always, and will always, be terrified of the mods. Literally, they scare me to death. (I especially don't want one because modtext scares me even more, and in my posts? I'd die of fright.)

Why does it scare you so much? It's only an internet forum. You don't go to jail for half a life sentence if you accidentally make a mistake.
Unless you're being sarcastic.

Mod Text isn't the equivalent of being put in the headlock shackle things from the 1600s. I don't see how it's humiliating. If anything, it hopefully serves as a reminder to others to not just do what Joe Schmoe did the post above you. And it's not a matter of a mod showing their "e-peen off." That's a gross generalization that I don't see (very often) on this site. They serve this site, and do so by correcting detrimental behavior. They are policemen of infractions and warnings, not a criminal record.
I don't understand the bitterness, honestly.
Well, i was going to defend the Mods, but after reading through all these i'm changing my message to...
You've never experienced what some of these people have said they experienced, so I don't see why you'd be so quick to change your mind after just a couple posts from another perspective that is shared by a few people.

That right there explains exactly what is wrong with this site. That's how your mods are to be viewed? Policemen?
How about guides? Advocates? Why policemen? Why go and dole out infractions for something that's considered helpful? Seriously, this is the first time I've heard of trying to help someone find the right forum be referred to as "detrimental behavior" and it's disgusting. Many people in the MtG community view this place as a joke, and the over-modding of the site is usually the first thing they bring up. And no, it's not complaints of "they wouldn't let me be a jerk." It's that the mods are to enamored with their authority and are too quick to whip it out, and that different mods enforce the rules differently.

WAIT, WHY IN THE BLOODY HELL DO YOU LOOK ME UP??? creeper much.. lol, its cool. The only reason im not afraid of mods is because the ones i usually talk to are australian, and australians are good people.
Ok, to bring some substance so i dont get caught with spam, (its disgusting, i dont see why people like to eat Spam.) Mods aren't here to police us and most don't. there job is to enforce the rules. I guess, i was off with my breakdown earlier so here you go...
The more you contribute positively, the less likely a mod will warn/infract you. I had a long sig recently and a mod warned me (no, not a warning, but more of a heads up) to put it in a spoiler as to not break that rule. I did so, and there were no issues. And let me ask all of you something, if the mods or admins were out of control, do you believe MTGS would be one of the to MTG sites on the web. If you want proof of my thought, look at what happened on MTGnews to see what a mod out of control looks like

The rationale behind that rule is that they don't want anyone relaying any misinformation. If someone replies in a thread that's a week or two old and I reply, "Hey, necro'ing threads is illegal around here," that's probably damaging to the quality of the site (since necro'ing is actually allowed now in most circumstances) and definitely damaging to the quality of the thread (since it would likely start an argument over the site's rules).
Seems like infracting only in the case of misinformation would be more elegant.

If you try to be helpful, and let someone know that their sales thread is missing prices, or that their trade thread is missing a wants section - YOU GET A WARNING. Yes, it's actually against the rules to try and help someone out by saying their thread is missing important information.
Just going to say this...
Outside of the obvious unnecessary clutter, the secretly lame thing about backseat modding is that a good deal of the time the backseat mod gets it wrong.

Do you see how that could cause confusion?
This is true but in the case of the above poster. Saying someone doesn't have a wants list and needs one is something you can't get wrong. Why should he get an infraction for this?

Like recently I got a month suspension from an infraction for "impersonating" someone, and since I am apparently suppose to know better dude to having a high post count and being around for ages it was a month suspension rather than just an infraction.
Just curious.. any reason you insist on posting this here rather than in the Community Issues section of the forum made for this type of discussion?

Because instead of just hitting the report button and letting a mod deal with it, it bumps that trading thread back to the top where it gets in the way of all the other threads that actually follow the rules.
That right there explains exactly what is wrong with this site. That's how your mods are to be viewed? Policemen?

Based on what Sene already said about not contributing to the discussion, and remembering that mods actually have the power to move a post to its correct destination, does it not make more sense to ask a mod to move the post?
I know that's a really extreme example because it is rare for someone to actually get a warning for posting in the wrong forum (Save maybe competitive discussions and you post up some jank list with no commentary).
I know people have mentioned that the report button's default text which the admins have stated they can't change is a bit abrupt, so new users hesitate to use it.
Most backseat mod infractions are handed out for stuff like "quit trolling" or "dude you're just flaming" why can't it be enough to use the report button so someone can flag it as an example of what not to do?
As far as inconsistancy goes. Sometimes mods have bad days, and considering there are something like 40 mods on this site, the tolerance level varies a lot. Just some things to think about.
8O the cardfather is backseat modding!! report him for spamming the forum and backseat modding!!
Infract a mod for backseat modding?
Some mods might put a warning on that post, but the question is legit.
From a moderators perspective: You've got a post which is somewhere between an upset user and a wild troll in a section of the forum that needs a lot of oversight calling out the mods, claiming that we aren't going to be rational with him. The mods for Water Cooler recently resigned from that post so its only handled by admins who have a lot on thier plate. The thread simply needs to be moved, but other users need to know that there is something wrong with the post because it may take a while for admins to get there. (indeed it went onto the second page before they did).
How you could be anything but subjective in that case is beyond me.
Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Most backseat mod infractions are handed out for stuff like "quit trolling" or "dude you're just flaming" why can't it be enough to use the report button so someone can flag it as an example of what not to do?
I think this is the real point that needs to be stressed. Every backseat modding infraction I've seen (including the years I lurked before finally joining) was for something that was very clearly spam, and likely would've been marked so if the backseat modding rule didn't exist. I really don't understand how anyone can keep a straight face while defending posts like that. Replying just to say "wrong forum" is the equivalent of asking a question in class that you already know the answer to; you're just trying to show off your knowledge, not contribute to the discussion.
just skimmed the first post, here are my thoughts:
i think its total bs the way that some [read: all] of the moderators throw the strictness of the guidelines around
eg: someone will post a question such as 'what is two plus two' and I will respond with 'four' and I will get a warning for making a one word post, which has happened many times to me, the questions are obviously not this pathetic, but often they will be something like 'what is the correct number of lands to play in 43lands'
also, when a mod closes a thread because the skim over the head post and misinterpret the intention of the thread, which has also happened multiple times [eg: making a thread about metagaming that happens to include a decklist for a MBC deck, gets closed because it belongs in the MBC thread]
I think 99% of the problems with the moderators are that they either a) do not actually read, b) can not actually read, or c) choose not to read peoples posts before issuing warnings etc
I think one-word posts is probably one of the easiest rule to be blindly misinterpreted by the staff -- some misinterpretation on the spirit of the rules are pretty hilarious in hindsight. Not that I know what is going on in the Staff's forum but it would be great if there are some guidelines to help staffs understand the spirit rather than just blindly following the letter of the rule.
As for the issue of backseat moderation, that is actually a pet peeve of mine since I could sometimes enter a decklist thread and find no comments on the deck itself but plenty of "Dude, you need decktags" and instructions on how to use deck tags. As an interested reader, I would usually prefer to read about the content rather than reading how the post itself is problematic.
Other times, when a perfectly good debate is coming up, it can get derailed by: -
Quote from trollface »
*Insert TROLL post*
Quote from angry dude »
Are you a troll? *insert angry dude's flame*
Quote from another angry dude »
*more flame directed to troll*
Quote from yet another angry dude »
*yet more flame directed to troll*
Quote from sage »
Don't feed the troll
...and the kicker? At the end of it all: -
Quote from wise guy »
Don't backseat moderate!
It gets more facepalm-worthy if the original post was not trollish at all, to begin with -_-"
What we also see, at least in my bailiwick, is a lot of backseat moderation as a sort of passive-aggressive flaming. When you can't call the other guy anything else, you call him a troll. I actually let that sort of commentary slide for a long time, but it got really bad, so I've started cracking down on it.

The thread simply needs to be moved, but other users need to know that there is something wrong with the post because it may take a while for admins to get there. (indeed it went onto the second page before they did).
How you could be anything but subjective in that case is beyond me.
Replying just to say "wrong forum" is the equivalent of asking a question in class that you already know the answer to; you're just trying to show off your knowledge, not contribute to the discussion.
i think its total bs the way that some [read: all] of the moderators throw the strictness of the guidelines around
eg: someone will post a question such as 'what is two plus two' and I will respond with 'four' and I will get a warning for making a one word post, which has happened many times to me, the questions are obviously not this pathetic, but often they will be something like 'what is the correct number of lands to play in 43lands'
also, when a mod closes a thread because the skim over the head post and misinterpret the intention of the thread, which has also happened multiple times [eg: making a thread about metagaming that happens to include a decklist for a MBC deck, gets closed because it belongs in the MBC thread]
I think 99% of the problems with the moderators are that they either a) do not actually read, b) can not actually read, or c) choose not to read peoples posts before issuing warnings etc
just my thoughts, whatever
As for the issue of backseat moderation, that is actually a pet peeve of mine since I could sometimes enter a decklist thread and find no comments on the deck itself but plenty of "Dude, you need decktags" and instructions on how to use deck tags. As an interested reader, I would usually prefer to read about the content rather than reading how the post itself is problematic.
Other times, when a perfectly good debate is coming up, it can get derailed by: -
...and the kicker? At the end of it all: -
It gets more facepalm-worthy if the original post was not trollish at all, to begin with -_-"
