Unknown. Curse turtled up, Hannes is MIA. Would you buy a forum with a seething community already throwing rocks? No, you wouldn't. Likely we've all pissed the bed enough that it can be seen from orbit; you'd have to be crazy to buy in now.

I believe that to be speculation. Is it? Business entities often buy struggling entities specifically because it's easier to clean things up under new management.. although granted HR is a different beast altogether, so I'm not sure how common it is there.

What was the state of the community when they first offered to buy the Site;)
Bah. I may be alone here but I'm not in the least sympathetic to the staff in this matter. If you mouth off to your buddy who is a member of the site Gestapo(Godwin's Law...awww yeah!!) about an incomplete business transaction that will shut down said secret police, do you really expect him to keep your confidence? I don't know whether the staff was being naive or just foolish when they took Gutter members into their confidence. I'm not surprised that this happened at all and while I'm inclined to support the staff in most things I cannot in this matter.
I realize that the staff don't own the site. They can't control if the site is sold or even summarily shut down. They do have control of information regarding confidential matters. Personally, I feel they shouldn't have been negotiating with the Gutter at all. As they have proven, their operation can thrive and grow elsewhere. Their NSFW content and "culture" were not in sync with the rest of MTGS and this was said many times. There is no reason the Gutter couldn't have been notified that they need to find another home and be given a month to do so. Unlike real life, groups can be deleted from a forum and there are no consequences and certainly no legal recourse. CI is already a battleground and the Gutter was such a minority that after an 80 page thread(with countless suspensions and several ban therewithin) the matter would be closed.
tl;dr
It was dumb to tell the Gutter they might be shut down after negotiating with them and the fallout is solely on the staff.

"Seething community" seems like a big exaggeration. Approximately 50 users have posted on this thread. Right now, approximately 2000 users are online. While these issues are important, the overwhelming majority of the community doesn't know or doesn't care.
I guess OP wants it to be 'keyworded' like "dies" was. What word would you replace ETB with though?
When Aegis Angel is born?
When Huntmaster of the Fells arrives?
When Kitchen Sphinx lands?
When Faerie Imposter busts in?
When Dread Cacodemon pops in?
When Malfegor shows up?
Except the staff at large didn't do that. The leakers did.
It seems probable that the leaker was a staff member. As the prospective deal was a secret it would have been on a need to know basis. So I expect that the Admins, maybe some trustworthy Globals, Hannes, and whatever Curse guy who handles potential acquisitions knew the specifics and that's it. None of these people seem to have any reason to leak the information but then again you just never know. I don't expect any confessions of guilt or agreement with what I think. I'm just saying.

No, all of moderation knew everything the admins knew (or nearly that much anyway). The leaker was a moderator, but it could have been any moderator.

The staff is still a part of the community (!), one which is impacted by the culture of this subforum, & staff culture would figure directly in any relationship with a new owner.
Then such actions are the sole and individual responsibility of that rogue staff member, not "the staff" as a body.
I hate to tell you this but the actions of one of you ultimately affects the reputation of all of you. That may not be fair but that's how it is. In a perfect world we would judge everyone on their individual merits. In reality, we automatically blame serial killer's and school shooter's parents for their children's crimes and don't seem to understand how unenlightened and illogical that is.

The problem with "the leak's actions reflect poorly upon the staff" is that "certain Gutterites' actions reflect poorly upon the Gutter" is the exact same logic, and the latter is something everyone involved in that situation have strove to avoid. It also means that this situation could be succinctly boiled down to something simplistic like "corrupt staff vs group of trolls," and I don't think anyone wants that.
Then, sorry to say so, but, it was entirely Curse`s fault for literally shooting into their own feet (unless they had no intentions whatsoever to buy this site; other than to troll us), because it really doesn`t take a prophet to see that their course of action (directly demanding the Admins in responsibility here to blatantly lie to the userbase) will create a metric ****ton of negative fallout towards them.

"Easy to clean up" is not a phrase often posted here in CI, you must be teasing.

I think the field of suspects is smaller than it appears.
