(01:46:27) LeakyFaucet63: Hello
(01:46:27) CM <AUTO-REPLY>: I'm not here right now
(01:46:53) LeakyFaucet63: Are you there?
(01:55:21) LeakyFaucet63: I guess not
(01:55:30) LeakyFaucet63: Just wanted to give you guys a heads up: Someone at a higher level (global or admin) is contacting administrators of other forums, asking for information on certain members and ex-members of MTGS, in an effort to find the origin(s) of the leaks. This is not being done with the knowledge of regular mods (as far as I know) and, as far as I'm concerned, I find it outright disgusting.
(01:58:21) LeakyFaucet63: Please make well with this info
I would also like to add that MandersHex's information (Her email used as registration, IP address) was requested from another website and the other websites owner was told it was for "official Sally business" and therefore couldn't be told what they needed it for. The owner of said website has confirmed this is all true.
I'm appalled and disgusted at what the current staff of this site are doing, what is the explanation of all this?

Dare I say you are certainly trying to instigate some sort of unrest. I am wondering as to why you have posted this here as opposed to the staff inbox. Discreetness might be useful unless you have another agenda here.
As a user of this site, I suppose I should be concerned about user privacy and safety; but, I can't say that this isn't more than fear-mongering, rabble-rousing, and a matter that cannot be verified or substantiated, independently or even otherwise, by any piece of evidence whatsoever.
If it pleases you and does not incur too much inconvenience to yourself, please address this concern as soon as possible. I am genuinely interested as to why this was posted and whether, truly, there are implications as to the rest of us.

I will admit that this is one of those things that comes up regularly. I know that in the course of some investigations on other sites, I've had to do my own digging in order to get to the bottom of certain things (for instance, ripping off people or failure to properly adhere to the law). When you deal in, say, trading cards with a monetary value (even if they are just colored cardboard), there's laws that need to be followed. If it's being done in order to facilitate compliance with applicable laws, then so be it.
If it is being done for anything else, then I'd be a bit wary, btu I don't see too much of an issue. If this is in regards to the leaks, I don't think you'll find much. If someone wants to be a leak, they're going to make a new screen name complete with a separate e-mail in order to get around it.
Honestly, it's probably nothing to worry about.

What the hell, man? Are you really trying to damn the staff for using the tools available to clear up a major problem in their day-to-day operations!?
Yeah, I really just can't get myself worked up over this. The staff have a huge issue and this can help them solve it. Besides, what information of mine could they possibly get? My real name? My old address? Off-site contacts? The staff already has access to those things. What personal information should I be upset that they could get?
The moment staff piles up a lot of this information for no reason and/or publicizes this information, then there is cause to get upset.
In this case, these are perfectly reasonable requests considering how damaging these leaks are, and how important it is to stop them, and it's not like the information requested was excessive in any way. And you can be sure that as long unless someone commits a Market Street-related violation, personal information will absolutely not be publicized.

To be fair, there are pretty expansive things that can be done with just your name.

This. The MTGS staff does not pry into people's information past what is necessary for the job. We track down returning gimmicks, rippers, etc., but never do we make public any incidental information found along the way.
This doesn't surprise me, after seeing hacking a users account suggested by staff, I think it's safe to say some of the staff are willing to break boundaries and potentially even laws to get what they want.
Yes it might not be a huge issue to some, but this opens up a big big can of worms because users information is protected by privacy acts and both mtgs and any other sites taking part in this could face serious trouble.
The MTGS Staff are committed to properly abiding by the relevant laws regarding user information and anything relating to our roles on site. I assure you that we've broken none. If you believe we have violated a law or are in danger of doing so, please PM me or another admin the law(s) you have in mind.
Regarding hacking a user's account. We have never done such a thing in my tenure, and while it is possible with admin permissions, it is not something the admins have considered as an option to date. Whatever the circumstances are that would make it something we'd consider, we've not yet reached them.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

Do the administrators ever consider options as separate entities?
From my commentary, it should be obvious that the staff's insular qualities and slow reaction speed would top my own personal list, but I'd hasten to add that this is confirmation bias in the worst way.

I don't know about you but I would be kind of annoyed if my IP address and current email address were being handed out to people without my permission.

I'd be more pissed at the person who takes "it's official business, I can't discuss it with you" as legitimate and doesn't do their own investigation before giving over my personal information.

None of my information was handed over to anyone on Staff. I believe the person that was asked for it when he says he gave them nothing.
I didn't want this brought up publicly because it's added drama that's not necessary, but since it has been, yes, everything pf said is true and I find it unnerving that I wasn't asked for that information directly. I thought this mod team knew me and knows that I've never had anything to hide. I would have answered it honestly.
All I can deduce is that they really think I am behind the leaks and are trying to find proof.
I was waiting for authorization from the third party involved before I did this, but I'll create an Inbox thread for discussion about this between myself and the staff, and I would like to request that this thread be closed. There's no use for this. This is just going to create more drama, and I never thought the Staff did anything illegal by asking the admin from the other site for my e-mail. Just unsavory and cowardly.
It's more than a trifle hypocritical to hear the Gutter *****ing about this when I know Kijin, for one, was assembling dossiers on users that he didn't like, including myself.
Harkius
This will not be a tangent talked about in here as kijin is no longer a member of MTGS.
Data protection is very important and indeed some of the things mentioned so far come close to breeching UK data protection act of 1988, if that line were crossed it would be a big issue , there are similar laws protecting all European citizens.
Which part? If you are going to say we are potentially breaking laws I think you should point to what part of the law you think we are breaking.
I am not saying you "are" , I am stating you potentially could be by gathering information without consent.
It would depend where and what and who you are gathering information on.
Since I do not know what data you are gathering I cannot tell you which areas you could potentially be breaking, I just know that the laws governing personal data protection in the UK govern very clearly what can and cannot be requested and under what circumstances.
Oh on a side issue but related I am not sure whether the site falls under the new regulations regarding clarity of sites cookie usage but not sure thats an issue to discuss here just thought i'd point it out while you asked
To be clear, I did not nor am I accusing staff of breaking any laws I was stating I am sure the staff (or at least I certainly hope so) have done their research as obviously data protection is a very hot topic at the moment.
And I am asking for you to provide the law you think we might be breaking. I am an art teacher and my expertise is oceans away from European Privacy Law. You may not be accusing us, but it sure looks like you think it's possible we are breaking international law by trying to verify information that pertains to this site's operation.
It would make sense to believe that one is innocent until proven guilty, wouldn't it?
True, but he's making a concrete statement that they are not in violation of that law. How can he possibly know that?
Regardless, look, the Staff and I have already resolved this. They're doing their job. I'm going to research US laws (as I'm in the US) to make sure they're not doing anything to break OUR laws, but seriously, I don't believe they meant any harm. I understand their reasons for needing to investigate me a bit. I'm still put off that they couldn't just ASK me, but yeah, people lie, so I see that, too.
I really don't see any good coming out of this thread anymore and repeat my request that it be closed. As I'm the only one listed as having been impacted by this, I think that should amount to something.

You guys should understand one thing: For starters you are not the internet police, and you have no rights to ask for the disclosure of private information stored offsite (of MTGS). As Belgareth said, there are laws that disallow this in many countries, but you shouldn't even need to reach this sort of debate once you arrive at the juncture where you realize that what you are doing is plainly immoral. Period. End of story. We wrap our stuff and go home.
No really, after lying to the userbase (see ExpiredRascals OP in the leak thread vs. the later clarification by Nai) we now have the snooping/spying to the userbase?
Bravo.
