Hey guys, I know there's been some rumors flying around, so let us put this to rest.
The details are:
Hannes (the owner of MTGS) has been talking to Curse.com about them assuming custodianship of the site.
Nothing has been settled yet, it's still in the talks phase. It's unlikely to affect what makes this site popular, such as our Rumor Mill.
If we go with Curse, our contact with Curse would be Boubouille from MMO-Champion, and Diablofans, and assorted other sites. His work there should speak for itself.
As of this posting, there's nothing final. It's currently just discussion between the two groups.
Recently, there's been a number of rumors floating around about this deal, and we've been trying to quash them while getting as much information as we could to set the record straight. This is why some posts have been deleted recently.
I assure you that the administration will be paying close attention to this thread and answering where we can and dispelling misconceptions to the best of our ability.
Additionally, certain bans, intended to stop rumors from getting out of hand are going to be reviewed so those not intending to cause trouble will not be punished. This process has already started. We apologize to all those affected.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

Well, I'm disappointed in how this was handled, but at least it is now known publically. Just wondering if yall are OK with me posting a link to a backup of kijin's post from earlier today?
Hopefully this does turn out for the best though, I don't see that much bad stuff could come from this.
I guess OP wants it to be 'keyworded' like "dies" was. What word would you replace ETB with though?
When Aegis Angel is born?
When Huntmaster of the Fells arrives?
When Kitchen Sphinx lands?
When Faerie Imposter busts in?
When Dread Cacodemon pops in?
When Malfegor shows up?
Who/what is Curse.com? My firewall is blocking them right now.
Any hints as to what might be in store for the site? Obviously, there were some people who considered this important enough to talk about that they risked their place in this community. It makes me wonder if there was something to worry about.
Curse.com is a network of gaming websites. From what I gather (since I don't play most of the games they work on), they run a program for gathering mods for these games and organizing them. They run the websites as a discussion-based thing, and they sell their program through them.
As for what's in store for the site, we're not sure yet. Nothing's set in stone.
From the rumors going around, I gather some people saw 'Curse is purchasing MTGS' and jumped to conclusions about what will happen on the website.

It's a gaming site dedicated to PC games. They're primarily known for hosting add-ons for WoW and the like. The site is generally safe to visit, but I've had shady things happen with ads there before.
Because conservative bias is a far, far worse thing. Liberal bias doesn't, statistically speaking, make people stupid. Conservative bias (or at least Fox's version of it) does.

The thought that was expressed in the gutter apparently (from what I've seen through layers of filtering) was that Curse would make MTGS an official site, meaning no unofficial spoilers, but we'd get our own special ones. ER's post seems to contradict that however, so take that as you may. I've yet to form an opinion in either direction.

I'm talking with Nai about your request right now, but I figure i can address the rest of it in the meantime.
Yeah, I think saying we could have handled it better is an understatement, and an admission I'm not afraid to make. I woke up to it today and everything had already gone to hell (if you'll forgive the phrase).
Regarding your last bit, yeah, if this goes through it could mean a lot for the site. We were on the verge of crashing for a couple days this rumour season, and Hannes hasn't been able to devote all the time to the backend that a site this size needs. being able to fix stuff like malware quickly could only be good for the site.

I know my opinion isn't worth a huge amount to a lot of the people that live in Community Issues, but based on all of the discourse and discussion with the people at Curse, I am actually pretty excited about this. Obviously we can't say too much about the details, but all of my "oh dear god they are going to ruin X" fears have been pushed aside. It could be a trainwreck, it could be nothing, but after talking about this for what seems like years, I am very much looking forward to the changes.
Jobie, Shazbot, ein, kijin, and anyone else in that conversation (cryptic I know :-/), all I can say is that I am very sorry. When I was talking with you about how to solve site issues and move forward this wasn't really something I had the information to factor into that. The ______ is dead, Long live the _______
Now that the gag order's finally come off, it certainly seems to me as if having an active site owner could potentially do a lot of good for the site.
Aside from that, I'd like it on record that I was not forewarned regarding the gutter attack. And I'll most likely be keeping my opinions on the subject to myself for the time being.

I just wanted to underline this. It has been some time since Hannes has been able to offer the site the time it needs, as well as afford the costs of maintaining her, & while the staff have been doing the best we can to keep her on course Salve has been limping along for quite some time now.
This is an opportunity for the ship to be righted & get under full steam again. As far as it has been discussed, changes to would be effected in stages, with a focus on getting us clean of malicious software & security holes a priority.
Change can be scary! & the dust won't settle for a while, but please understand that this is a huge boon for this website's future.

This doesn't actually make any logical sense, given that WoTC's own official forums allow unofficial spoilers.

So it's safe to assume that the gutter will be abolished?
There is a little wiggle room there, but as it is, things like slurs & hazing would be off the table. This also affects the NSFW subs. TO BE SURE, this is all up in the air, but is being discussed.
I hope Market Street will remain unaffected. Being able to trade on here is the only way I'm able to affordably obtain a lot of the cards I need. I'd also hope the staff will remain unaffected. I'd hate to see some new owner who knows nothing about the site come in, boot out all of the established staff who care about the site, and replace them with new faces.

So effectively yes. I mean, curse is a respectable site trying to make money. I can't imagine they would tolerate a lot of NSFW stuff.
Seems to early to really talk about what Curse curatorship would mean to us...we don't know anything really about what this means to the site and how it will be run.
I wouldn't say we don't know anything. Curse has acquired other sites in the past, so history may provide some clues.

So say we all!
As you can imagine I have been watching the discussion for anything involving Market Street and as far as I can tell NOTHING will change. I actually hope to pick their brains about site security and seeing if they have any ideas about how to make things better!

Not necessarily; if the parent corporation wanted that they'd probably just make a competitor site. Buying the MTGSavvy brand would obviously be used to take advantage of the existing community and atmosphere.
Under the old gutter it was all allowed, we were in the process of changing some of that but then this has happened. Nothing is really clear right now.

So...cautious thumbsup?

Cautious optimism is the way to go forward here. There will be a lot of benefits from this deal but a lot of stuff is still nebulous and undefined. The spreading of rumours before things had any certainty is/was harmful; until we know for certain about everything that will happen all the speculation was just hurting the website.

As far as has been discussed, all current staff will remain, hiring will continue to be in-house, day-to-day operations will continue to be staff responsibility.

It could...but it could also potentially do the opposite, since you couldn't fire a hypothetical bad site owner.

Well, the odds weigh heavily in favor of positive change, as the owner would be rewarded/chastised in the form of actual cash monies.
Another good read for those interested in how we may be affected is the Curse Terms of Service.
Curse runs something like 40-60 websites – they're pretty successful at what they do.

How will this affect non-magic forums such as clans and mafia?
