The word is censored manually when the post is infracted?
Oh! I don't know how I missed that interpretation. So issue an infraction and manually censor it. Yes, that's what would happen, like what happens now with censor evasion.

Honestly, in an ideal world, I'd scratch the Censor altogether. People should know they can't use the F-word and we shouldn't need software to correct that. In other cases, like ******, queer, *****, etc., people should know when they are acceptable and when they are not. In an ideal world, we would not need the censor. But this is not an ideal world and people do often use these words. I like it that we have a censor that prevents users from getting cards for typing "****" or "****". In corner cases, people should read their posts before submiting and trying to understand if they are being correct woth their wording.
Also, like Sænæ said, I don't think people should care that much for words. That's all they are, words. It's the intent that hurts, not the words themselves. But, alas, I'm not in charge of international law and, if we want to have 13 year olds being able to access the site, there are certain standards we must mantain.
Mm. I wouldn't really mind removing the censor either, from a purely selfish standpoint (though I swear very little myself). The only thing that bugs me about swearing is overuse. Many tend to swear all the time, replacing other adjectives, and slowly but surely ruining their vocabulary. I think it's harder for someone who swears all the time anyway to properly emphasize something.
Anyway, it should be said that the culture is quite different over here for this sort of thing. I don't think there is more swearing than in, say, the US, but stuff is very rarely censored. Neither is stuff like naked bodies or blood. People don't think of it as a big deal.
The purpose of censorship should be to reduce the usage of inappropriate, vulgar words that do not add reasonable meaning to a conversation; on the other hand, care should be taken to avoid stymying a reasonable and mature expression of viewpoint. The 'F-word' does not do enough work to justify keeping off the censor given that there are multitudinous ways to refer to sex in a more mature manner. 'Retarded' and 'rape' do enough work by themselves because retarded is a very straightforward shorthand for someone with developmental disabilities and 'rape' very succinctly captures the meaning of forcible sex. Further, the inappropriate usages of 'retarded' and 'rape' come in somewhat lower on the scale of inappropriateness than the 'F-word.' Neither should be on the list, but mods should have the discretion to infract for inappropriate usage. On the other hand, 'r-word' almost always signals derogatory usage, is rarely used just to signal developmental disabilities, etc., so it may be worth keeping on the list (but probably not). '****' and 'whore' are also particularly low on the scale of vulgarity and don't seem to come up very often on MTGS, so it seems reasonable to also exclude them from the censor list.
This is not accurate. A family member of mine works in the healthcare field and served mentally retarded clients for eighteen years. She has used terms like retarded or MR to describe her clients in a clinical context, which at least was accepted practice. Retarded is not an especially derogatory term in that context.
Someone trying to use it that way on an Internet forum is definitely going to come across very differently than a professional using that same term. Context is huge.
I am bi, I take no offense to words like "queer" or "gay" or "twink."
If someone wants to call me a queer ass ****** twink, I would laugh and ask them if they were just jealous of my good looks. ^.^'
BUT, it is not that the words need censored, it is that the community ought be respectful.
IE
If someone says, "Lets have a *****in' good time!" or "Good game *****es" that is passable to me. Someone who is obviously trolling and hits someone with "ShutthaFup you c--tfaced B" should be reported, and dealt with accordingly.
I am not a big fan of censorship, I understand why it exists in some cases, but sometimes I just like to be able to say what I damn well mean.
Well, like I said before, it's often more about what you mean than about what you actually say.
Bingo. Let's not infract people for the words they use,, let's do it for the way they use them. If they're using them inappropriately slap them with a card. The word filter should only be used for words with no appropriate use whatsoever.

If context is so huge, then shouldn't we wait to see the context something is used in before deciding if it's inappropriate, and not just make assumptions based upon how you think people will use it?

Retrodrome!
Hoi, hoi, u embleer hrair
M'saion ulé hraka vair.
IDK how vBulletin's censor is configured, but the software in other forums has this nice feature where a censored word is replaced by a non-offensive equivalent. I wonder if something like that could be implemented here. For example the offensive word cone could be replaced with 1⁄3πr²h or something.
Now that I mention it, I do wonder why these offensive words haven't been censored yet:
That would certainly deter the usage of inappropriate words.
...and be about the most inelegant way of handling it. Stars work just fine. Simple, non-obtrusive, and **** if the admins will take away my ****ing censors!!! (There is still value in profanity that's been censored)
I can't think of any valid uses of the word "retarded" that couldn't easily be replaced with a less offensive word.
Honestly, in an ideal world, I'd scratch the Censor altogether.
I'd keep it. It's usually pretty easy to guess which expletive was censored out, and it keeps the site more PG friendly.
She has used terms like retarded or MR to describe her clients in a clinical context, which at least was accepted practice.
I haven't heard retarded used in a clinical context to describe mentally handicapped people in a LOOONG time. That term has been relegated to slang status since at least the 80's.
My only issue with some of the current taboo words - and this extends beyond these forums - is that proper and non-inappropriate use of some words is considered acceptable, while others are not.
Example:
20
"His Winter Orb completely retarded the match down to a crawl."
is considered acceptable.
But
20
"I completed raped his hand with a Mind Twist"
is for some reason not always socially acceptable, even though it is proper and appropriate word use.
"Rape" has meant "to pillage or plunder - to seize by force" since before it was used as "forced sexual relations" and (more importantly) continues to mean this to this day. In fact, "raping someone" is simply saying a person was pillaged, rather then someone's possessions. This is derived from the fact that women in olden days were considered property, and the crime was actually considered to be against the person owning that woman. If anything, saying someone was "Raped" is more offensive then using rape for its other terms, since you are calling that person an object. "Sexual Abuse" is not only more fitting, but does not have the negative historical connotation.
Backing to it's use as pillage - the terms are so synonymous to this day that if someone said "They pillaged her" there would be no confusion as to the meaning. There is no negative connotation to "I raped his whole battlefield" as well as no confusion, nor any improper use.
Again, this goes beyond these forums, but it still baffles me.
Language evolves. What things used to mean is less relevant than what they mean now. Yes, you used to be able to have a gay old time with the coloured folk, but now that language would be considered outdated and racist, respectively. There's no point in clinging to old definitions while usage changes around you.

Sums it up perfectly. For better or worse, we live in a PC world. While I don't particularly much care for censorship, it can be difficult to judge tone/context on forums. I think I would rather err on the side of caution.

I agree, which is why I think it's silly that I was infracted for saying what I did.
