Is there any way to control the way columns display with the deck tags? It seems to really want to be two columns if possible and sometimes your lands are way below everything else. I noticed if you label something sideboard it will get put into its own column. Is there any other way to control the columns?
Yes and no.
Sideboard will always push to its own column.
I don't know the exact methodology, but it's an automated process on how it divides them into columns. Depending on the deck, you can get two or three columns. Sometimes, if it displays a little wonky, you can reorder the sections and it'll change its layout. If it feels way off, try swapping the order (ie: Spells, Creatures, Artifacts -> Artifacts, Spells, Creatures). Hopefully it'll separate it closer to your liking.
Not sure how helpful this is since I do this more for EDH decks. I don't have a problem with 60 card constructed decks being only two columns, but I suppose if there are a bunch of singleton cards, it could make it tough to read as 2 columns.
Anyway, when I post my EDH lists, I always want them to be in 3 columns and I have found, through a bit of trial and error, that each column supports a certain number of cards before it moves over to the next column. It seems that a header value is what is used to break out the sections.
I use Magic Album to create my decklists and then another program I wrote specifically to create deck tags for this forum from those decklists. In it, I create a new header whenever I reach 28 cards in a column and I try to cut off each column when it reaches 39 cards. I chose these numbers because it gives a little wiggle room with the way the forum handles this and so far, with all my lists, these numbers have had universal success.
Here are some examples. The first is the way my deck looks when I run it through my program to create the headers and the order:
Notice that now I only have two columns. I believe this is because the first 2 sections are not large enough for the forum software to break out the next section to a new column so it just keeps it together. I am not entirely sure of the exact numbers that matter, but I have had success with the 28 & 39 numbers above.
To explain a little bit further, since my lands and General are less than 28 records, it keeps my creatures (42 records), lands and General in one column. However, if I put Enchantments between Lands and Creatures, now I have 30 records with Lands, General, and Enchantments so it breaks out the next section to its own column. That section (creatures) is then 42 records, so the next section goes to its own column. These numbers don't really allow for more than 117 records in the list, (39 in each column) so if you have more than that, I am guessing the forum software handles that a bit differently.
Also, as far as I can tell, it will display everything in the order you choose as I always want my lands displayed first so I am not sure why you lands would get pushed to the bottom.
Retired Lists: Ghave - Hanna - Thrun - Zur
Pauper: Crypt Rats
Sideboard will always push to its own column.

No longer staff here.
