I think a lot of traditional art remains, and WotC tries to keep a balance. Aleksi, Staples, Zug, Rex (one of my favorites, unfortunately not working on Magic anymore), Baga, etc. The digital artists they do employ tend to be at the top of their game (Izzy, Kotaki, etc), and usually have a painter's flair, even when working digitally.
There is no possible way they could appeal to everyone that plays the game, since some people absolutely love Argyle and Swanland, while others love Guay and Critchlow. Arguing that one or the other doesn't take talent and imagination is pointless, since they are working, successful artists, each with a strong following.
On a personal note, I've worked with mostly traditional mediums, and trying to produce work with the same skill digitally is actually pretty tough. Entirely different animal.
You may not like well defined, realistic art, but that doesn't mean you have to bash it. I can see artistic qualities in older magic art and in surreal pieces, but it's not necessarily as aesthetically appealing or fun to look at (especially at card size) as some of the more realistic (and very well done) pieces of modern magic art.
To each his own, not to mine and mine alone. Calm the eff down.
I see not liking it as a very good reason to bash it. I feel the art is bad. From a technical standpoint this may not be the case, but from a practical and taste standpoint, hell yeah I feel that way.
But whatevs. Another new artist I've grown to like is Eric Fortune. A very good artist, although it's a shame that Wizards seems to have phased him out as of m10.

MTGS: Where criticism of staff is a bannable offense.

My sig is not trolling. And it's not opinion, it's fact.
And I'm not changing it. I'm not gonna be browbeated by a moderator, simply because you don't like the fact that I'm bringing to light that the staff suspends half-decent posters, while allowing trolls to run rampant.
Well, you've still got about fourteen hours before you're infracted for noncompliance. Talk to whomever you want.
Well since I only have one artist based EDH deck, I'm going to list Guay as my favorite artist.
Does anybody know if she is still active or not? She hasn't had any cards in magic since m10, her website hasn't been updated in years, and when I sent her an email months ago I never got any reply.
The Butt and I seem to have very similar tastes. I love all of the soulful, abstract, stylistic pieces from earlier sets, as well as the traditional land paintings from Rob Alexander. Some of my favorite artists, and pieces that I like:
Anson Maddocks:
Harold McNeill:
Richard Kane Ferguson:
Mark Tedin:
Tom Wanerstrand:
Rob Alexander:

And I absolutely love John Avon's art.
Realm of photoshops and Skittles!
Akroma has vigilance so you can't tap that.
