What do you guys normally use for spacing? My Island doesn't pop out as much as I expected it to, and I see that some of the users here are using nifty methods to ascend this. I would post pictures, but am without a camera. I'd like to do more of these, so please post your suggestions!
Also, I used acid-free brush pens for inking the borders, and they still bled into the edges of the faces a little. What pens and/or techniques should I be using?
...and now that I think about it, I also had the problem of getting the pieces set square before the glue dried, so solutions to that would be appreciated...
I'm thinking I'll commission Shazaam for a Loxodon Hierarch when I can nail down 2-3 more. The art looks as though it'd lend itself very nicely to being a 3D elephant/life counter complement to my elephant deck : )
And serrot_29, have you just given up on PMs in general?
@ bone_doc: oooh cruel ultimatum would be pretty kewl... *scampers off to pilfer through card piles*
@ Benalicious Hero: I use Pigma Brush pens... and i notice a little bleed, but its not significant enough to warrant me changing what i use.
@ MidoriRyu: uh... no.... ok, maybe that was a lie. as of late, i rarely check my PM's. aaah... trading post ping. yeah, about that... sent ya a pm ;P
@ All: Well I've been super busy. getting maybe only 2 hours a night to work on my cards and I'm no where near half way.... only 4 are still WIPs... *sigh* err... make that 5, yays half way to all being WIPs
Thanks for the inspiration on this one Shazaam!
Forgot to remove uncut filler.... yet that looks kinda kewl... might keep it that way.
Barely half way on this one. It also has lots of little floating bits.
I also have Vampire's Bite WIP, but I havent taken pictures of it cuz it looks kinda silly as is. I'll post it once I get it done. RoE Smother is next in line, followed by Soul's Attendant, and finally Plated Geopede. Hope to get these done soon to share with everyone.
I saw this thread about an hour ago and got interested... I went and rifled through my cards and came up with this set of four mountains. I wish I had a fifth so the trees (top layer) could have been divided into a left and right side, but oh well.
One Issue I ran into was that the printed card i used for the top layer isn't centered on the cardboard, it's shifted slightly down. This turned out to not be so bad, because it gave the treeline on the left a second layer slightly offset from the other.
I haven't decided if it is done or not...not sure what else I would like to add. The vines being connected seamlessly into the guy's skin make it difficult to layer them directly without it looking janky (IMO)
Also, check out this feature from this weekend's Japanese National Championship. I've been wondering if Ookubo was still making cards, glad to see he is :).
I somehow missed seeing a bunch of the more recent posts until now! Awesome to see more people doing this. I just wish I could see some of these in person to get the full effect.
Speaking of seeing these in person, if anyone is attending the M11 prerelease in Houston @ the GW Bush Mariott that is where I'll be sellin mah wares. I def don't mind showing them off between games.
Also, good to see Ookubo is still doing these. I can't remember where, but I recall seeing on some artists site, something about Ookubo giving them an amazing piece. I believe it also mentioned something about that other guy from that artcle Shazaam linked. Il have to refind that article.
Anyone have some tips on lining up cards to glue them back to back evenly?
I haven't had any problems just using my hands to align them. Just use your hands to hold each side of the card and squish it together. That said, I use two part epoxy to hold the cards together. I found white glue to be too weak and require too much babysitting to hold the cards together. With the epoxy it holds together very quickly (however, I can only use a small drop at a time otherwise it hardens before I go back for more).
Along these same lines, what types of spacers are people using? One one hand I like the simplicity that Ookubo style spacing (foam?) offers in terms of putting the card together, but I also like the look and feel of a solid thick card using extra cards as spacers. Anyone have any suggestions for things to try?
I'll get pictures of these up soon. I like how Plains and Blood Seeker came out, Torch slinger is OK and Venerated Teacher looks good, there is just not much going on in the picture.
Had a free weekend so I picked up on this again. I experimented with the life counter format that people have been trying and it turned out pretty well. Time Sieve and Spire Golem
I tried curving the 'Bulbs' of the Time Sieve to give it a good look. It turned out pretty well.
@Benalicious Hero: d.g has it right, use your hands to align them. as for the glue, I use a tacky craft glue. picked up a new bottle. its just a white, elmer's-like glue, but it has a tackier (is that a word) feel.
@d.g: I always glue these things in sections, never the whole thing at once so the cards don't slide as i put them together. I've never had too many issues with the cards holding once it sets a bit, which i usually do something else while i wait. Can't wait to see your cut cards.
@Jaws2k: LOVE the Sieve!! i like those rose beads, almost picked some of those up this week.
@tamuru: mmmm ... Induce Despair. that was gonna be one of the 10 i did this week, but decided on Vampire's Bite and Smother instead.... tho i may come back to that card. Great first attempts. Tho, one piece of advice, sharp blades. When one starts to dull, it tears the card and makes rough edges instead of cut, clean edges. you lose some of the 3d feel bc of this. Tell her to keep it up tho, practice makes perfect.
@all: Seeing everyone's work here is inspiring me. i just want to do more and more of these, to push myself to do these. Hopefully I'll get around to photographing and posting my weeks completed works.
I picked up some spray adhesive and now my alignment problems are over. I was using a tack glue, and it dried way too fast. Using your hands to align the cards doesn't count for anything when they're fastened as soon as they come into contact.
But the new problem presented by the spray is finding a background surface to lay the cards on... do NOT use newspaper.
Well, I've been mentioning these for the past couple of weeks and have finally completed them today. I was only able to fit in 9 of these, #10 will have to wait until my next run.
Newspaper worked for me, just make sure you dont put another card down where spray got on the newspaper previously.
I'll give this a shot; though it seems wasteful to me to go through that much newspaper... but hey, it's not like I read the damn things.
Those all look amazing, serrot_29. But if I could offer some constructive criticism, did you intentionally leave the river of lava on Plated Geopede recessed? Maybe it looks better in person, but I try not to leave any recessions in "foregrounds" that would be closer than backgrounds (in this case, the lava and the mountains behind/beside it). I think it looks unnatural and disrupts the 3D effect. Other than that, absolutely fantastic.
ehh I use old newspapers that everyone's allready done with, so it doesn't really matter. Also, you can just flip one sheet over/swap one layer and it's fine, it doesn't bleed through.

I use single-side-adhesive foam to space mine. With glue stick for the other side. Clean and quick.
Always tough for me to choose what pictures to show; usually a straight-on view shows the layering better, but eliminates all depth - that's why I've mentioned before wanting to see the work in this thread in person.
@d.g. - Nice work. I especially like the Dark Ritual. Is that a Beta one on top? If so I think that's the most expensive 3D card in the thread!
@serrot - Domestication looks so good! Nice Karona, too It's funny, before I saw your work I thought there was a "best" way of doing 3D - I didn't think I'd figured it out, but that I was trying to get closer to a theoretical best way. Your style, though, is very different from mine, but still looks really great, and there are some cards that your style would work better with than mine. It's cool that I keep learning things about layering that show it's much less straight-forward than I think.
Also, I feel weird that I can tell what brand of pens you use just by recognizing the combination of colors
A question: When you look at your cards straight-on, can you see the border/art meet points like we can in the pictures? For instance, on the picture of Karona - her cape layer looks like it's raised up higher than it should be, so we can see where the cape meets the border. Is that just because of the angle of the picture, or is it actually raised up?
You guys are making me jealous for time! I can't wait until I have the free time to crank out a few in a week again - I hope those times aren't behind me for good.
@Shazaam
I have been looking some of these 3D cards over and they are amazing. I have read over most the posts here but I still have a question. In many of the pictures posted of the 3D cards seperated it looks like some have made the image 3D by having most the layering ancored to an outside border edge of some sort and then laying one layer over another giving a depth to each layer. But on some of your cards it appears some of the layers are not ancored to an outer edge, do you adhere each layer to the layer directly below or is it ancored to a border somewere on each layer? For example in your kaervek the merciless his right arms look like they are just attached to the layer below and not an outer edge.
edit:
or another example would be the karrthus, tyrant of jund his head (top most layer to his neck) is just there. it does not appear to have anything attached to it.

As much as possible, I keep part of the art of each layer connected to an edge; this makes layering much easier to do. Most cards have some details that can't be done this way, so I also end up cutting out a lot of pieces and pasting them directly to another layer.
You can see more examples of this type of layering in other peoples' art in this thread as well - serrot's Plated Geopede and Staggershock both have lots of this type of layering.
There is a great deal of potential variation as well. Sometimes these pieces cross from behind one layer and to on top of another layer. Sometimes I attach small squares of card behind the piece to make it look like it's floating and connected to nothing. Sometimes I use a razor blade to shave off half of the thickness of the layer to make it not stick up as much but still be layered.
Cruel Ultimatum?
