After having seen all of Mr Alexander's work laid out on the table at the LA prerelease... and a wad of cash in my pocket from selling altered cards... I can't say I wasn't tempted.
I'm also one that enjoys the collecting of Original Magic Art.
Here is my collection as it stands now:
Sliver Queen
City of Traitors
Wall of Blossoms
Turnabout
Scaled Wurm (Ice Age)
Sleight of Hand (9th Edition)
Stone Rain (6th Edition) w/ Sketch

I've also picked up a bunch of sketches for digital pieces, the closest you can get for original art of the new digital pieces:
Gorilla Shaman
Magus of the Moon
Evacuation (10th Edition)
Toil of Night and Day
Anavolver
Symbiotic Wurm
Goblin Flectomancer
Squelch
I've seen Survival of the Fittest up on the auction site as well as one of the Hymn to Tourach originals, the Hymn sold but I don't think the Survival was purchased at the $1400 minimum that it was offered at.
I constantly try to keep my ear to the ground on Original Art that comes on the market but haven't bought anything lately.
Hopefully I'll pick something up at this year's Gen Con.
I actually have undersketches for two of KrauserKrauser's originals (Sliver Queen and Scaled Wurm) - in fact, I think Gelon did two for Scaled Wurm. He also did two for Dread Wight, like anyone cares. An incomplete list of my sketches is below. Still working on getting them all catalogued and photographed (and watermarked!). As for paintings, I only have about 35 of them, but a few are pretty cool... Empyrial Armor, RV Plateau, Alpha Drain Life, River Boa, 5E Sea Sprites are a few of the better ones.. though from a value perspective I am pretty happy with my pile - o - Guays from Masques and Portal. Her name is starting to mean something for value.

An Unused Amy Weber Card
Not many, but I love them
I understand why so many freelance artists have gone digital, but I feel bad that there isn't an original out there. I also think cards made from paint look a lot better than cards made from zeroes and ones.
as a long time collector, i laugh at those prices-its only worth whats someones willing to pay and those prices by that dealer are not even in the ballpark of reasonable-my guess is that he really doesnt want to sell them, but if some business man from overseas say who wants to get into the hobby of collecting and doesnt know the going rate, he/she might pay for it. but its no mistake that these pieces have been "on sale" on ebay for years now-IMO its really to bad as it prohibits real fans from having these iconic pieces and just drives the speculative market up for only someone looking to turn a quick buck-but good luck to him-he bought/owns them so he can do with him what he pleases. i would never buy a piece like that from a thrid party-its much better and cheaper to deal right with the artist or engage in trades
as for you Cnrtspll-i bow before your mighty collection. i thought i had an amazing collection until i saw your list. i am happy re: counterspells that i was able to get Lost in the Mist from Innistrad-i fell in love with the piece as soon as i saw it and knew i had to have it
Here are a few of the pieces that I have picked up over the past couple years. Some of them are just signed prints, others are commissioned pieces that are tributes to the original magic cards, one is the process sketches.
Cromat process sketches with correspondence from WOTC, print, and artist's proof signed by Donato Giancola. He even included a signed Ebon Dragon print because he is such a nice guy!
Korlash, Heir to Blackblade print with artist sketches, foil promo, and one of a kind commission all signed by Richard Kane Ferguson.
Yawgmoth's Will print, artist's proof, and commission all signed by Ron Spencer

I can finally say that I have a piece of original Magic art. My wife was able to procure the original art for Wild Pair as a part of my global set. I have been wanting to get ahold of this for about a year now, and my wife surprised me for Christmas. Needless to say, it is the best Christmas present I have ever recieved. I love my wife, and very much appreciate her helping me with my vice.
Like I said, about a year ago, I decided to start a global set of Wild Pair. I've played with the card since it was released, and have never really let it go since. Just having both english versions didn't feel like enough, so the global set seemed like a fun challenge. Being the completionist that I am, I wanted to include the original art as a part of my set. This decision set quite a story into motion.
I started to track down the artist, Mark Brill, to try and figure out where the art was, and if it was even available. While looking for contact information, I came across a copy of his resume. He had listed Sierra Entertainment as one of his former jobs. Once upon a time, my wife was a tester for Sierra, and thought there might be a connection. When I showed this to her, she was stunned. Apparently, she was on the same team with Mark back in her Sierra days. It really is a small world after all.
She wanted to get in contact with him again, and I asked her to look into the status of the original art I was looking for. When she heard back, it turned out that he had donated it to a local charity auction earlier that month. I was rather disappointed that the art had made it out into the wild. I felt like I had missed my chance to get it. The only lead we had was a facebook post mentioning the name of the auction winner. Given so little info, I basically resigned myself to fact that I would probably never see the art again. I looked for eBay listings hoping that they were going to try and flip the art. I scoured the internet for some glimmer of hope that the original would come my way, but to no avail.
While I was agonizing over the art being sold, unbeknownst to me, she had somehow contacted the buyer. It was a long shot with just a name and Facebook, but she tried anyway, knowing how much it meant to me. Long story short, she had gotten ahold of him, and convinced him to sell it to her. Have I mentioned that I love my wife? This all happened around October. The charity auction was around July, but she had managed to keep it quiet the entire time she was negotiating and during the run up to Christmas. She had managed to rope her Mom into this ordeal. The seller was in Seattle, and her Mom lives there as well. My wife arranged with the seller to have her Mom buy it locally, and then she would deliver it her when she flew in for the holidays.
The real kicker to this behind the scenes sale is that she had told me that she heard from Mark that the art had been "sold again". After all of the looking around online, it sucked quite a bit to hear it slip away again. The ironic part about her telling me this was that I had posited that she had bought the art and would enlist the help of my mother as a shipping address. It was a really close guess to what happened, but I didn't really think she would have been that lucky to buy the piece.
Once her Mom flew in for the holidays, they went ahead and presented me with the original art. My wife had assumed that I had figured out what was going on with my little theory and that wrapping and what not wasn't really necessary. I was rather surprised because I hadn't put much stock in the notion. In the end, she had come through on a promise she made when we found out the art was sold. She can be quite the sly fox, but I love her all the more for it.
In total, she was able to get the original art, 2 artist proofs, and some signed copies (both Planar Chaos and PDS: Slivers). Mark was kind enough to throw in his signed PT San Diego pass as an additional gift. Thanks for the cards, Mark! Pics, since it happened:
The original included a signed copy of the card, an artist proof with sketch, and a random unknown card showing the regular Magic backer. One of these days, I would like to have a look at the back of the art so that I can read WotC's notes, provided they are there.
I am trying to find out who owns the original art for the M10 Birds of Paradise. I dont think it was a purely digital rendering, and my wife fell in love with that picture the first time she saw it.

You need to be looking for the Ravnica art, since that is when that particular art first appeared. The problem is, I believe that Vignali is mostly a digital artist. This means that there is likely no "original art" for the card. There might be some sketches or something, but no original in the sense that there is a painting somewhere.

It's true, Vignali stopped using acrylics around 2002 (ONS block art).
I'm sure there is a concept sketch out there somewhere.
Ahhh, damn. This is the problem that I ran into when I inquired about the Zendikar full-art island with the bowl. Maybe I can pay a king's ransom to have an acrylic commission done

You could, or you might consider paying signifcantly less for an sketched artist proof. I imagine he probably has a few left, considering how many times the Birds have been reprinted with his art.
It's a real bummer when looking for original artwork only to find it is digital. My biggest bummer was Form of the Dragon by Daarken from the FTV series. He does do canvas prints, so I may have to pick one up some day.
I currently own:
Noble Hierarch
Sword of Fire and Ice
Coal Stoker
Martyr of Ashes
Veinfire Borderpost
The Pieces are Coming Together(Archenemy Scheme)
I am looking for Qasali Pridemage by Chris Rahn. He sold it quite awhile ago and I have not heard a peep about who has it. If anyone has any information that knows if it is available for trade/sale let me know.

do you have a favorite artist that you'd like to collect? how about a price range? i just saw a cool one by terese neilsen up for about 1000 for stronghold machinist/biologist, which seems like a good buy as terese's work is amazing.
it was very well written and i hear you 100%-we agree-you know my pieces well-lol-i am selling some of them off (just dont have the space-IMO some good ones too) but you are right, i am holding onto mirrari and dawnstrider-but there are others that i am selling so if you are intrested pm me, watch ebay or talk to colin-i have one awesome post that i am selling that i think colin is taking a photo of for you before it hits ebay-its silent assassin-the colors are much more rich than on the card-thats what i often hate about WOTC printing process and now that you have some orignals you can see this but they "wash out" the colors when they print the card-the colors are so much more vivid on the originals-i hope you like the rk post you bought-you got a great one and hope you like silent assassin-i might in the future put up a scott fisher, but that one wont be cheap-in the 1-2 range. but i agree with you...paying 6,000 for an original is ridiculous the most i ever paid was 2000 and most around 1500 which for an original piece by a great artist seems fair.
i love how you say karn is your lotus and you would never buy the mox pearl-that is so true-for me-i feel that way about rebecca guay-just looking at her art makes me happy and thats why i would never part with one of her originals-
I own the original Shuler Weakness. I've been looking for Jesper Myrfor's "The Fallen" for quite sometime, but I havent had any luck whatsoever tracking it down.
After having seen all of Mr Alexander's work laid out on the table at the LA prerelease... and a wad of cash in my pocket from selling altered cards... I can't say I wasn't tempted.

I hope you mean Mana Drain. It's on the Bay for a tick under $49k.
I do find it rather amusing that the Mox Pearl original is "only" $175,000. I think the guy has been trying to move it for a few years now.

Now that Wild Pair is safely in the vaults, all we need to do is track down the arts for Vesuvan Doppelganger and Whispers of the Muse.
Please provide content to your posts. Thank you.

You could, or you might consider paying signifcantly less for an sketched artist proof. I imagine he probably has a few left, considering how many times the Birds have been reprinted with his art.
I currently own:
Noble Hierarch
Sword of Fire and Ice
Coal Stoker

I am looking for Qasali Pridemage by Chris Rahn. He sold it quite awhile ago and I have not heard a peep about who has it. If anyone has any information that knows if it is available for trade/sale let me know.
do you have a favorite artist that you'd like to collect? how about a price range? i just saw a cool one by terese neilsen up for about 1000 for stronghold machinist/biologist, which seems like a good buy as terese's work is amazing.
it was very well written and i hear you 100%-we agree-you know my pieces well-lol-i am selling some of them off (just dont have the space-IMO some good ones too) but you are right, i am holding onto mirrari and dawnstrider-but there are others that i am selling so if you are intrested pm me, watch ebay or talk to colin-i have one awesome post that i am selling that i think colin is taking a photo of for you before it hits ebay-its silent assassin-the colors are much more rich than on the card-thats what i often hate about WOTC printing process and now that you have some orignals you can see this but they "wash out" the colors when they print the card-the colors are so much more vivid on the originals-i hope you like the rk post you bought-you got a great one and hope you like silent assassin-i might in the future put up a scott fisher, but that one wont be cheap-in the 1-2 range. but i agree with you...paying 6,000 for an original is ridiculous the most i ever paid was 2000 and most around 1500 which for an original piece by a great artist seems fair.
i love how you say karn is your lotus and you would never buy the mox pearl-that is so true-for me-i feel that way about rebecca guay-just looking at her art makes me happy and thats why i would never part with one of her originals-
take care and keep in touch!
