can someone tell me how to prep a card for personal art? ive tried white out, erasing, and other ways but it doesnt really seem to work. can someone teach me how they do their art on the card? also what kind of ink and stuff do you use? i was planning on using the paint i use for my 40k figures
I've heard acetone works well for whiting out the card if you want to start with a blank slate. Tape off the stuff you want to keep before using it though.
Magic Rub... I am not joking. But lately I have been just priming because nobody seems to care about the difference in image surface. I like erasing since it leaves a smoother end result but I am 100% convinces that I was the only person that noticed.
I have been working on doing completely new art on some ZEN basic lands that I have been using Prismacolor Markers/Pens/Micron 005 Pens for. The problem is, ZEN lands have that funky curve in the art box, I have tried some methods, but what is the best way to clear off JUST the art on the cards? I am trying to leave the borders and everything else. For reference, I have been trying to tape it down, and then use lacquer thinner to wipe off the art and leave just the plain white behind, but It's really tough to retain the edges.
The easiest way is to use blue painters tape and tape off the edges. In order to get the curve taped off properly, you should actually cut out the picture in one of the lands and use that as a guide to cut the tape in the correct curve shape.
I hope that was clear, if not I will try and explain it better. Good luck.
I'm going to pick up paints this weekend, so I was curious, is it better to lay a white foundation before I start to paint over? And if so, what kind of paint should I use for that, just the regular soft acrylics?
I'm not super pro or anything, but I just put a slightly off-white base coat most of the time, using the same paints (though really watered down) I'll finish the card with. If you're working with a really dark card, though (ie M12 Ponder), you might put a base coat of a dark grey or even blue-black to make life easier for you in the long run.
The point is just to flesh out the basic areas of the cards and make it easier to paint the details later on. Just keep in mind that you have to be patient with the base coat, since you'll be applying it quite thin - depending on the kinds of paints you use, and the color of the coat, you might end up having to go back over 4 or 5 times just to get the base coat relatively opaque.
Hey, I'm a beginning alterist and I would like to improve my ability to alter cards. I've read some of the introductions but they don't really help me that much. Here's something I did last week:
Point is, I need help. I can post more alters if you guys would like to see more. All I have are two sets of introductory acrylics. I can also post a higher-quality version of the above alter if requested.
First of, please post a better picture. It`s hard to see anything on that pic.
Also, there`s a thread here in the forum that`s dedicated to critique concerning alters. I would assume that`s a good place to iterate your request.
Last but not least: Please be more specific about your challenges. Why are you having trouble, where do you need help? If you don`t make an effort here, most likely no one else feels inclined to do so.
I was wondering if you could tell me how to remove a magic card picture without painting over it. Someone told me that you can use a tool to scratch the art off, but I am unsure of what tool to use or if that is even a valid way to go about this. It would mean tons if you could let me know. Thanks
Ok first of all it looks like you used a single shade of orange. Do you see the gradations in intensity value and hue?. There is that yellow highlight in the center, it gets less intense, (rtry adding blue in small quanities) your alter does none of that.
Also look arond the textbox. See how you haphazirdly just made it. It looks sloppy and like you dont care.
Icant twll feom the picture but im assuming the paint is thick. Try using multle waterwd down lauers. You will build up coverage and it will look nicer.

The easiest way to do it is to use a foil card, dip the corner in acetone, and peel the foil sheet off. You'll be left with a card with the entire face removed.
you can just use acetone and rub the card with some toilet roll dipped in the acetone. If you just want the picture gone and not the text box and border you can use masking tape off the areas you want to keep.

I've been altering some cards with my basic paint set (has all primaries, green, black, and white), but I can't really get the colors right. Is there an introductory acrylic set for alters?

First of all (I feel dumb saying this...) I know squat about paint vocabulary. Is there a web site that I can obtain this information?
Thanks for the critiques, guys. I'll try to alter another one hopefully in a few days.

No. Color matching takes a lot of training, experience and the right mix of colors. I am yet to see an intro packt that will provide you with the right set.
As for "primaries", that term is misleading, making you believe you could mix a colors just with these three basic colors. Truth is, you will need at least 2 different versions of every primary (warm/cold, i.g. ultramarine blue vs cyan) and mixing these colors will provide a much greater variety of mixed colors.
You should also have something like Burnt umber, Yellow Ocre...

I've made a few acrylic altered cards and was wondering what's the best sealer/varnish/shellac/polyurathane to finish the cards so they won't chip or wear during use.
I see alot of people recommending Krylon Kamar Varnish but it's not sold in my area. Also is spray on better than paint on? I picked up a bottle of the Bulls Eye Shellac "Traditional Finish and Sealer". It seals nicely but up close it leaves alot of blotches. Also, the cards are not smooth like I would want them to be (making it hard to shuffle).
I usually don't like sealing mine. They hold up well in sleeves anyway and it can cause color shift in the paint. But when I do I prefer dosequis, I mean Krylon Semi Gloss. Just make sure you scan first( if you scan - if does'nt matter in photos as much). I let them vent off for like a week. If you don't it will make your deck smell.
Okay. How long do you typically let it dry for before putting to use?
I do just a couple thin coats and they are good to sleeve the next morning. Test it out yourself though... a lot of factors can play into the equation.
