Thanks, the only issue is that my paints are older, and much thicker than brand new paints. I've been thinning them heavily. In fact to about the consistency of milk. It's been working okay.
It's heartening to know that others use citadel. Thanks.
Any advice on thinning techniques using Liquitex products? Like Acrylic Matte Medium and the like?
I'd prefer not to use water as really thinned paints tend to soak into the card, causing warping when I use broader strokes.
Edit:
On a tangental note - AVR foils blank extremely easily with acetone. Literally seconds of wiping.
Edit Edit:
Well, I bit the bullet and just bought some Liquitex Matte Medium and answered my own question.
The answer: Yes, it works much better than water and does not soak through the card. The pigments blend very, very well with it, and although it has a milky appearance, it dries to the paint color. It doesn't alter the pigment very much at all... I poured quite a bit into a small dab of black, mixing it to an almost watery consistency, and it barely lightened at all.
Formal opinion... I very much prefer to use acetone to wipe away the ink rather than just painting over the original art. It takes far fewer coats to cover and using a proper base color makes a huge difference (in both cases - acetone vs. covering - to be fair).
Any advice on how to approach altering foils? I tried one, but after painting I tried using the ol toothpick method to shape the edges and ended up pealing off the ink. Maybe I should just avoid foils?
Foils are tough... I'm trying to figure that out right now. I used to print and glue them on but I felt that the final product is lacking that way. You can use your fingernail to peel the foil easily and then paint and re-foil. I also tried painting but the foil presents trouble.
I have been lurking the digital rendering thread for a few days and would really like to create a cube with alt art for the magic cards like the ones I have seen in that thread. The problem is, I am unsure where to start. Could someone assist me in finding the right program(s) in order to do this and show me either a tutorial on how to do this or if someone is willing to work with me a bit, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am relatively new to altering, and I have a question about blanking cards. If anyone has experience with sharpie alters, what is the best way to blank cards? I know that putting down a base coat of paint is best for paint alters, but for sharpies, what is the best way? I do not have access to acetone or any chemical that would blank the card for that matter. I tried white out, but it is not the best surface for drawing on, even once it has completely dried. Thanks in advance for the help.
If I posted this in the wrong thread, can a mod move it to the correct one please?
I would be very appreciative if someone could answer this question, or direct me to a place that could answer it. I tried my hand at altering today, but my main concern was that when I first applied the paint (with a small amount of water mixed in) it was not even close to enough to cover the border of the card. Even when I used black, it was not nearly dark enough, and you could see right through it to the original card borders. I am currently using Craft Smart acrylic craft paint. Should I apply multiple coats? Am I using the wrong paints? I've watched alter videos on line, and much of the time it seems like the paint being used easily covers the original card art/borders. Any help would be appreciated.

Having used those paints in the past I can tell you that you perhaps are using the wrong paint. Although you should stay with acrylics, brands like Craft Smart and Ceramcoat are weak in pigment and are better served on more porous surfaces like untreated paper and pottery. Try to obtain some acrylics designed for painting miniatures like Games Workshop, Privateer Press or Vallejo brands. they have a higher pigment strength and will cover your cards more opaquely.

Just a quick question. In terms of altering could someone explain the carbon copy technique. I've kinda heard about it from friends and would like to know more.
I have the opportunity to either get a set of Golden Open paints, or Citadel paints, any suggestions?
Personally, I really enjoy the variety of colours that Citadel offers out of the gate, as well as the easy little pots they're stored in. I have also used Liquitex Soft Body paints. Golden Acrylics have a good reputation as well. Many professionals (and amateurs) use Golden liquid acrylics.
My one tip if you are going to be investing a chunk of change in either brand (Citadel runs ~$4 a color and around $500 for the full new set, I am not positive on Golden's pricing), is that if you do not have much if any experience painting - buying a cheap brand of acrylic craft paint (such as Folk Art, sold at Michaels) and just mixing colours for a while. It is a great way to experiment and get used to colour matching. Wasting expensive/quality paints isn't too fun!
So I had the idea to try painting on some cards. I wa curious if anyone has had success with water colors. The look I'm going for is done with water colors. The sample I did looked good on paper, but I wanted to make sure it would work on the cards before I blank them.
If they don't work is there a way to duplicate the water color look that will work on a card? In some other medium?

I have tried Kamar Varnish and Krylon Matte Finish to seal my cards. The varnish made the cards too shiny and the matte finish changed the color of my artwork and now it doesn't quite match the card colors.
Can anyone recommend a good sealer that doesn't change the card at all? I am in the US. Brand name and type will really help out.
Please Give me your honest opinion. Do not take the joker/ gambit too seriously if you don't like it, it's just me learning to draw my own stuff on the card.
So im using a staedtler white eraser to erase the stuff from cards and after erasing 2 cards i realized that i got a blister on my thumb. the last time this happened was several weeks ago, doing the same thing. I want to know if you guys get this as well and if there is anyway to prevent this.
Import them, staples.com or something, just a suggestion from a random passerby

The technique simples simple enough is it widely used?
