Henrik, that's some great work there. Thanks for sharing it. I think I would theme that whole playmat out as a G/W kinda' thing. Just my opinion.
Okay, so Friday night when I was able to pilot my deck to an amazing finals finish (end happy gloat lol) I was able to get my girlfriend to swing by with her digital camera again and snap some pictures of my other two friends' playmats that I hadn't posted yet. One is a unique take on a dimir-esque Teferi, thus the blackened eyes. The other is a splashing of red and white spells, for a friend whose favorite colors are those two. These were done on request by them, so they had about ninety-nine percent of the say-so in how the finished product came out. However, I love to also do non-magic related artwork as well, albeit fantasy mostly. I can do other kids, but fantasy and mosnsters and logos and such are my forte. Anywho, here are the playmats.
I like your style, a direct copy is good, but style is hard to find!
Do you pencil it out first? Or do you go direct with ink? What if there was an error?
Edit: took me a while to recognise, but that is the alt art grim lavamancer no?
Thank you for the kind words. I just sketch something on paper of how I think it will roughly look. Afterwards, I use the pens and markers I spoke of earlier in the thread to draw it out and color it in. Errors? Well, I just try VERY hard not to make any and thus far I've been lucky lol.
And yes, that is the judge promo Grim Lavamancer.:D
Thank you for the kind words Krash. I was fairly pleased with that Isamaru mat. I think deciding to color in the whole border of the playmat really made it standout. I wanted to make the Lightning Bolt look better, but my friend wanted it to have that old school feel to it, so I tried not to stray too far from Rush's style on the original.
It's funny that I stumble upon this thread when I just decided today to color on my playmat, I will openly defend myself by saying that I am not nearly as talented as you folks, and as soon as I finish my work I will post a picture. Sweet~!
:owow, those are really cool. I'm currently making a red one with Keldon Marauders coming from the left side but my camera isn't working so I don't have a picture of it yet. I can't decide what to put on the right side :-/, most of its open and I'm trying to think of some cool classic card like goblin piledriver- or something, I'll put up a picture up when i get a chance.
@Darjarri Whew, man, that's pretty sweet, the faces depth is a tad off but that's the only thing that I can see and if that's it... well thats a damn good job
I want to get more into stuff like this, but I always stumble over a) fingers b) shading and c) scaling, any tips?

I have used pencil alot in the past, but then I hated the fact the pencils would dull, so I went with a mechanical pencil and I hated the lead always breaking, and then on top of all that, I knew that once I was done, I had to go back over everything in ink, which seemed like a pain in the donkey. I don't do anything properly when it comes to art although I should.
In other news, I feel more honored to have YOU coloring my work. Your art and abilities are exceptional man. I think you have plenty of talent yourself. I own Photoshop CS2 and I can barely use it at all. I seem to lack the patience to do tutorials, My friend Steve went to college for graphic art and such and before he went off to Iraq, he left me this GIANT book on how to use Photoshop, that they used as his primary text book in college for learning it. It came with a CD and honestly, I've booted that thing up and cracked that book every bit of two times. I just think that I'm not cut out to be a colorer. I like to design creatures, monsters, and conceptual art kind of stuff. Style guides and the like. Anywho, thanks again to you and everyone else that I've missed a kind word from. That really means alot to me.
It sounds like you might draw a little harder than the normal person. I had that problem too. Pencils would dull, mechanical ...well... just suck, so I went to pen and sharpie. I also hold the pencil oddly, and I look like I'm angry at the paper, but that is a different story....Now I have a WACOM tablet but the way I sketch is somewhat hard to get used too.
You're style is amazing and someone needs to make them into fully scaleable vectors. T-shirts would like a word with you. I'd buy a couple.
First things first.. After the Artwork contest, could you maybe draw an auratog (best creature ever followed by mountain goat) I could do it, but I am not that good and your particular style would be awesome to see how you interpret it.
Secondly, You should do more and post the linework. I'd love to color some of the work not meaning for contests or anything, just for fun. Its just that good.
Lastly, I tried to get a blank mat off the web, ha good luck to that.. but here is what I have and I recently found it while cleaning up my computer. Maybe some viewers can use it.
...collection (This is 25% of what I actually made.)
If you want to am exact copy just use an overhead projector, I had a friend a while back who did his sons room with one , he did a sports theme and had pictures of players he took out of S.I. it came out great. This should work for the playmats also . just an idea so you dont have to worry about messing up with a sketch, I know to a true artist this would be cheating but it can save you some cash if you do it yourself.

Thanks for those kind words. I would love to try a stab at the ole' auratog sometime. I have some other work that I could send you from my Photobucket, if you'd like to try it. Just PM me and let me know.:)
The art itself is fine. Compositionally its kindda off though, the right side looks empty. Maybe you could do what everyone else seems to be doing and add motifs from another card to balance the pic?
@Darjarri: I agree with atsc83 in that the art is really good, but the right side needs something else.
On the art itself, it might look a little better if you added some little bits of energy all over the place, to symbolize that the energy is flying everywhere. But for the most part, I think you did a really good job with that.
For the right side, I would suggest putting in the art from some other highly recognizable Magic card. Off the top of my head I don't have any good suggestions, but something that fits mechanically with the Command and has very recognizable art.
Yeah, definitely well done but maybe a Guile on the other side to balance it out? Very nice work all the same.

I was thinking maybe jace perhaps?
but another thing i was thinking of was to do profane command and have the energies mixing tigether.
Took me a while to trace. I found that it was easier to print out a lineart of the object I wanted to trace, then using a finepoint sharpie and some clothespins and a lot of patience I could do a section of a time in near-perfect tracing.
It may not be magic related, but it's a playmat. And I'm going to be playing Magic on it. So it's Related.

QFT. That stuff is absolutely amazing.
I especially liked the Grim Lavamancer and Isamaru one, but the other one is really nice too.
