I want to alter a card very slightly. I want to alter Mana Short so that the flower petals, and possibly the stem, are high gloss while the rest of the card stays matte. I've never altered a card before and would like to know how I can do this. I have some artistic talent so this should be quite simple. I also don't want this to create an unlevel surface on the card. Please let me know what method I can use for this.
EDIT: If you're unfamiliar with the card, the newest printing changed the art. All others were a rose with a petal falling.
So, when you say you want to alter it, you just want to change the gloss level, not actually paint anything?
With paints, you can add mediums to affect the glossiness, but you don't usually want to use a medium by itself. One exception is mixing GOLDEN Soft Gel (Gloss) medium in a 2:1 ratio with water (preferably distilled/RO water so you don't add calcium or other minerals). This mixture is sometimes used as an isolation coat for an acrylic painting (just used it on my last painting). You'll need to apply it smoothly, which can be tricky if you are trying to follow a shape rather than apply an even coat over the entire surface. Also, gloss tends to highlight any inconsistencies in the surface level, so your results may or may not match what you want.
A second option would be to apply a latex masking fluid to every part of the card except the rose. Spray the card with a gloss finish spray, and then peel off the masking fluid. Again, it may or may not achieve the results you want, but as long as the gloss finish doesn't peel with the fluid, you should get a smooth finish.
Come to think of it, you might be able to combine the methods (use the masking fluid and then apply the gel medium). this would allow you to apply the medium smoothly.
I've never tried to just gloss up one part of a card, but one of these methods might work. Obviously, I'd recommend trying on a card you don't care about first. I've never applied masking fluid to a card and have no idea if it affects the ink. If it does, you could always cut frisket and then spray.
Thanks for the reply. You are correct, I don't want to paint anything, simply gloss the rose. I considered foil but I haven't found anything on how I could achieve that either. I just think it would add a nice touch to a card I think is pretty neat.
I was thinking about the possibility of masking off the rest of the card (maybe use a damaged copy or a 1:1 printout to create the mask so as not to damage the original when cutting it) and then using a high gloss clear coat spray.
