I just realized that Watza is advertising his week 42 banner in his sig. Isn't this a bit unfair? I think it should be in the rules we can't advertise in sigs for people to vote for us. It's... cheap. and desperate.
Come on, it's not so bad. He's not even saying "vote for me!" He's saying "If you like this banner, vote." I figure more publicity for the contest is good, and I don't really see why it's unfair... for now I'm going to let this slide, but I'm interested in hearing what other people have to say.
Also, I'm going to merge this with the rules thread.
That logic seems sound to me. The link for the voting thread doesn't send you to a place where you've already voted for Watza, it sends you to the place where you can compare all the sigs from Week 32 and vote accordingly. I have zero problems with this method of publicizing the contest.
PS— Oh, yes, and the red angry face is on the Rules thread.
I think we need more people from around the boards voting in these contests anyway, so I'm down for advertising it. As of now it's pretty much only the participants who are voting.
"Hello! I've come to serenade you. I can't play guitar. I can't play this accordion either, but I thought it'd be less obvious."
Dylan Moran, Black Books
I don't see a problem at all with an artist advertising the voting page in their sig. Just about the only people that vote in the contests are contestants. The way I see it is that if more people are giving their input then more artists will strive to improve their art. And I can't seem to find anything wrong with healthy competition.
I'm new to this section of the forums, and I'm still honing my skills so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.
Is every single forumer able to make poll threads after the week been closed, or timed out?
I mean... Imagine the week thread was made at 0.01am monday GMT time. and on the next monday exactly at 0.01 am monday GMT time, a mod has still not made the poll.
Can we do it for him?
Take into consideration that people have commitments outside of the internet. In such situations I think a bit of patience is the best choice.
I will add the new trophy rules once someone hits the 30 win mark (which is soon)
and also, I will probably add the section on Gimmick accounts, it should be self explanatory, but they still vote and that is an unfair swing in the friendly competetion.
Any gimmick found to be voting, will get their host account banned from the weeklies, or the vote won't count at the very least.
hey so not to be an ass but like whats with these polls? like they go up week after week, but there's no kind of winner lol championship polls go up and votes are given and closed without any kind of winner mentioned, sure you look at the poll and know, but like the one is closed and done with everyone tied at 2
There are definatly winners, when someone gets three wins you get a trophy, I don't know if anyone is keeping score anymore though
As for the tie im not sure, I think it counts as a win for both people.

If you waited to make your avatar/banned on Saturday, you could take an idea from a different avatar/banner, anyway. If you make it earlier, you make it earlier. I know that I'll accept an edited entry if you have it in before the deadline.
I've been reviewing the contest rules. I'm concerned that the previous banner size restriction might be a tad too strict. What size banners do you think the upper bound should be?
I'm kinda leaning towards something around 750x150 pixels.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

I've found that some other forums have the 200 x 800/900 banner size actually. your call though.
You probably don't want to go past 750px wide, so as to cater to the lowest common denominator for screen resolution (800x600). One thing I would like to see is a more lenient vertical cap. I imagine the reason they capped it so short was to minimize post lengths, but I've seen signatures that have ridiculously long compiled lengths (taking all text/image into account.) As of right now were restricted to horizontal rectangles. That can get monotonous.
I'm willing to experiment with vertical banners in some rounds, but I think that's likely a tad easier to handle by a round-based exemption. If we do a banner for someone or something for a round, like this round, I don't want to have to deal with an amazing piece that is inappropriate for the purpose. I need to think about it a little more though.
Also, I've been thinking of changing the Trophy prize structure.
What do you think of abandoning the 5, 12, 20, 30 structure and going to a run-off model?
The way it would work is every 2 or 3 months (8-12 weeks) we would have a poll between the weekly winning entries of that time period. This would make it so that a single excellent submission can carry you straight to a trophy and would make it a guaranteed 4-6 trophies given out per year. I would also be willing to do a second run-off for the best submission of the year and one for the best commissioned piece of the year (sig shops would choose and submit submit one of their pieces). I realize that last part extends outside the purview of the weekly contest, and it should be considered a separate proposition, but this seems the best place to discuss it as well.

Alright, my decision stands. Watza, advertize away.
I think it should be frontpage news when voting goes up. Then that would get more votes.

And there are enough stickies in the main Avvy and Sig Shops forum anyway.

For example, this week's theme is flight. I have winged character on the banner and the same character on the avvy, but without wings. Is it okay?
Good idea. I just added them.
