Well, well, well - what can I say? In January we had a couple of awesome entries and Bull & me are really looking forward to the outcome of this poll Well done everybody, I hope that many mtgs members will take part in voting and give you the credit you deserve... and of course find a worthy winner!
Let the voting begin - and good luck everybody:
MagicWitch: Dra'thari
Description
Species Name: Dra'thari
Sub-Species: Terrestrial, Aquatic, and Aerial
Habitat: Subterranean Caves, Caverns and Lakes.
Primary Mana Source: Mountian, Island, and or Forest
Plane: Unconfirmed
Common Abilties: Mountian Walk. Immune to Poison.
Primary Racial Attributes:
Dra'thari have evolved to best suit their subterranean world. All Dra'thari have large eyes, capable of penetrating complete darkness, but are vunerable to surface light sources even at night. Their large ears are batlike and highly sensative to the echoes and vibrations of the caverns they dwell in. Thier flesh is strong and has many spikes allowing them to move quickly through thier unground terrain, even if they must dig. The spines on thier bodies also work as a defense, as they are all laced with poison. (As is the stinger they weild on thier tails). They are immune to even the most toxic of poisons.
History:
The Dra'thari are a subterranean species of humanoids. Their civilization is tribal, (Tribes are based on the sub-species they were born into). The tribes co-exist with each other but all are hostile to outsiders.
The tribes are ruled over by a single Legendary Dra'thari Chimera, Seskret. In the Dra'thari Lore she is said to be the mother of all the Dra'thari Tribes and is worshiped as a Goddess. However, her origins are as elusive as the Queen herself, who is rarely seen.
The existance of the Dra'thari was unknown for thousands of years until such a time when the surface dwellers began to mine into the deep caves in search of rare minerals. The mining began to corrupt the mana sources of the Dra'thari and threw the tribes into civil unrest. )they consider any mineral that is created from the earth as belonging to them).
Seskret took it upon herself to make a rare appearance and warn the surface dwellers not to continue the mining.(not just to protect her own kind, but to protect the surface dwellers from the violent tribes). The surface dwellers took her warning instead a challange, assuming that she was keeping valuable resources from them.
Eventualy, the surface dwellers dug too deeply and infiltrated the caverns the Dra'thari . Having had their sanctuary corrupted, the Dra'thari have began an outright war with the surface dwellers, determined not only to take back thier mana sources, but to corrupt that of the surface dwellers as revenge for the damage they have done, (and the disrespect to Seskret).
The Dra'thari have proved formidible in force agianst the surface dwellers, who continue to struggle to fight off a vicious new enemy that can quite literally...take the ground out from underneath them.
((about this artwork:
Media: Pencil, Ink, Markers on Bristol Board. (no digital manipulation), Subject is a Terrestrial Dra'thari, Rogue. Casting Cost would be Red.))
CheshireBear: Numkins
Description:
Numkins are forest dwelling small mammals that stand about 3 to 4 feel tall. They are a quiet race, content with eating sleeping and cooking for days on end.
The Males of the Numkin race are the more peaceful gender, while the Females seem to be more drawn to violence and battle.
They prefer to live in the bottoms of tree trunks and within rock formations for housing.
There fur correlates to there age. The longer the fail fur, and the shorter the beard, the younger the Numkin. Males with no tail fur and extremely long beards usually lead the groups as the wisest and most experienced of them all. Females tails are the same as males, although they possess no facial hair, a trait they wish they possessed. Usually the battle helmets for females take the shape of beards.
Tsjagatai: Slogoth
Description:
Slogoth are a race of highly evolved seaslug-like beings, native to the deepest oceans of dominaria.
Slogoth are mostly peaceful herbivores, scavenging their suroundings for anything of interest to them.
They tend to be shy and prefer solitude over cohabitating with others of their species.
However they are not necesarily anti-scoial beings, as they have in fact been spotted banding in small parties.
Slogoth are blind, but posess the ability to send out ultrasonic waves. This enables them an equivalent to vision,
as well as allow them to communicate with one another. Besides this, their other defining quality
is the fact that they can seamlessly blend in with their surroundings due to their body texture.
Much like a chameleon they can copy patterns and collors of other beings and objects in close vicinity.

Xanth: Caesauditorius

Trancebam: Breckan
Description:
I suppose I'd describe them as elf-like in the sense that the race appreciates beauty and intelligence, but whereas elves like elegance and beauty for the sake of it, this race (called Breckan) appreciates practicality with their art and architecture and whatnot, while making it beautiful. As should be apparent from the plates on the concept's head and arms, this is a race of brawlers, which helps sell the idea of the race enjoying beauty only when it's used for practicality.
Ok, since everybody else seems too shy to comment on his vote, here are my 2 cents:
I like the entries from MagicWitch and Tsjagatai the most, with Tsjagatais Slogoth looking very professional and having great light effects. From an anatomy point of view, MagicWitche's Drathari seemed more difficult to produce, plus I like the many details. So my vote goes to MagicWitch.
Also, I like Xanth's Caesauditorius a lot. The picture seems like taken from an old biology book or like the notes a natural scientist of the 18th or 19th century would make about a new race or animal breed he discovered.
Lastly, the Numkins get my vote as well. A charming entry and I can very well see these little dudes be the center of an animated tv show.
All entries are very descriptive and interesting as a new race's background. I would have liked Trancebam's entry to be a bit more descriptive (even in the visual area.) That skull is so brilliantly done that I just feel there should have been a couple more of anathomical elements depicted.
Also, Tsjagatai's entry feels very professional. It's a great first rendition in the contests and is my favorite one.
Finally, I find the Numkins as an interesting variation on the dwarf-like type, but I would have preffered to have them less cartoony to make it easier the connection between the concept and the MtG style.
Thanks to everybody, entrants and voters, for making this round a very exciting one. Let's wait for the poll's closure and what comes the community up with next month.
Well, I'll add to the discussion with my two cents also.
I really admire Tsjagatai's skill and creativity in his design. His art is professional quality and it looks like a creature race that could have been featured in the Zendikar series.
My other vote went to MagicWitch because the design is simple yet elegant and reminds me of Erol Otus's artwork for the first edition Dungeons & Dragons modules made by TSR. It has a nostalgic yet classic "fantasy art" feel.
Yeah, I didn't end up getting the time to do more than that unfortunately. I also wasn't really expecting such a talented digital artist to pop up out of nowhere. This month I'll have to step up my game.
Ok, this very exciting round is closed too. Congratulations to Tsjagatai for his impressive victory, claiming over 70% of all votes and a big thanks to all participants for making this round very exciting ^_^^_^
