Alright everybody, time for a new episode of our little artwork contest! For me the artwork contest is always a good opportunity for participants to explore their skills in different areas of painting/drawing while enjoying what brings us all together here at mtgs: fantasy stuff.
The last episodes were very tightly connected to current Magic topics, though, and I would like to move a bit away from this to prevent things from getting boring.
So, why not combine a painting/drawing challenge with classical fantasy characters we all know?
In case this idea will enjoy enough popularity, we will repeat this in a similar way with another character next month.
Your challenge
Paint a classical wizard, a Merlin/Gandalf sort of guy and make use of the know stereotypes with the accessories we all know, like hat, staff, beard, whatever. :old::old:
In addition, your piece should follow this guideline (here comes the artistic challenge )
- Your piece must display a foreshortening perspective: An arm or leg of the wizard is closer to the beholder and viewed at an angle that certain body parts are obscured by it. See examples here.
- Your piece must explore the use of complementary colors, meaning that the wizard will mainly be illustrated in one color and the background of the image in a less saturated complementary color. E.g the wizard is red and the background is green.
- This is not mandatory, but to spice things up a bit your piece can show how the wizard is casting a spell.
Your reward
The contest winner determined by poll will be rewarded with a digital trophy above his avatar and announced on mtgsalvation home.
More information, rules and restrictions - please read carefully!
Regular rules
You can use any form of media to create your piece, including paint, markers, color pencils, digital tools etc.
The work you submit must be something new you created for this contest and nothing you pulled from your portfolio.
Keep in mind your entry should be work safe, so no naked boobies or something like that
Silent submission: Do not post your work here. Instead send it by pm to both adunakhor and blackbull. All entries will be revealed when the polls are up.
Deadline for this contest is 30 June, 23:59 of your local time
Contest specific rules & additional information
Currently none, but please ask if something is not clear

Do you specifically want the arm or leg of the Wizard to be foreshortened, or is the piece, as a whole, to exhibit foreshortening due to perspective?

Hmm... I will put it his way: Foreshortening should be a clearly recognizable element in your piece. It doesnt matter if it's due to a foreshortened foot, arm, hand or whatever - I will leave up that to your creativity.
Important for me is that the foreshortened body part obscures other parts of the wizard's body. A good example is the guy with the cell phone in the example collection you can find above, where the foreshortened hand almost completely obscures the right arm.
Basically, have a part of the wizard coming out at the viewer. Should be fairly easy. I might take a shot at this, it depends on if my computer is in working order in time.
I'm finding this one to be remarkably challenging. I've had a few false starts with sketches with POV's that weren't pushed enough & they ended up evolving into dramatic side views. I think I've got one I really like though so I'm going to finish it up this week.
Yeah, I was caught up trying to figure out how I wanted to do the composition myself. I decided on a more traditional feeling fantasy image, but with my own personal touch. I hope it turns out in time.
