Extending the Magic Because frames and borders were made to be transgressed!
In September, it was time to go back to basics and revisite the basis. This time, the theme was Art extension.
The challenge was:
"Take any card you want and extend its original art. Yes, any card! You may add new elements in the background and/or foreground, change part of the art, etc. You may also use any kind of technique (B&W, markers, acrylics, etc.) Still, the alter must clearly depict an extension of the original art, wich should still recognizable (tournament legal from an average judge's perspective.)"We've got two entries.
Poll Rules - Please read before voting
When voting, please assess how each entry fulfilled the challenge and take into account the quality of work submitted
Multi-vote: You can vote for more than one entry and this way give credit to more than one artist.
You are not allowed to vote for yourself. Votes are public and can be seen by everyone else
Feel free to comment on your vote. People will appreciate it.
Entries are displayed in the order they were submitted: first entries first, last entries last
The participant with the most votes will win. In case of a draw, the winner will be determined by the roll of a dice.
Please, don't try to influence the poll results in any way. Such activity would earn you a DQ and also a suspension from the contests. A relapse on such behavior would lead you to a permanent ban from the contests.
This poll will close on 17th October.
Entries:Good luck to both of you! IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:Due to the low attendance we have been suffering during the last months, this contest (as well as the other artwork contests) will pass through a recessuntil further notice. Thanks to everyone who took part of this and let's hope our contests to come back soon in better shape than ever, if such thing is even possible. (We will keep the contests subforum updated about any news regarding the contests.)
I'm sad to see the contests going away for a while. It is understandable since the last few months have had low/no entry counts. But on to what I came here for.
This is a tough one for me. Firstly the image quality of these either helps or hurts. I can really tell what queengothica's is. Its big and bright. the2ndsamurai's on the other hand is rather dark. I like what I "think" is going on in the2ndsamurai's piece, but I can't tell. I'd hate for a piece to lose because the image quality showing it off is dark. Though, it seems that that might be the case here.
In the end, my vote goes to the2ndsamurai's piece. Mainly because it feels a bit more original than just slapping the 5 swords onto the Mystic. I may be way off as I don't follow the altered art thread like I used to, but I do remember quite a few "Swords on Mystics" pieces.
I like both entries, but why is one larger than the other?
I'm sad to see the contests going away :/ Hopefully they come back soon.
Both images were posted as sent. If tweaking queengothica13's image size to be at the same size than the2ndsamurai's, it would have hurted the image quality, and that wouldn't have been fair. If doing the opposite *enlarging the second one* it would have ended pixelated, and that wouldn't have been fair either. Just decided to post the images as sent and have them showing the quality their creators wanted/were able to get.
How is it not fair? The rules said 300px. I once submitted an entry that was larger and it was resized.
If anything, it's unfair to the smaller one, that followed the rules.
Which one really seems more fair?
Here's the rules section you're referring to:
"When submitting your entry, please make sure your pic/scan has a width of 300 pixel. If you can`t do it, no problem, but it would help a lot to make entries more comparable."
That clearly states that it isn't mandatory for the users, nor even it's mandatory for the organizers to resize the images.
Finished my input as a contest organizer, I would like to comment on your post as the user I'm:
If you would like to be really helpful, you wouldn't make such comments in a so boisterous way (wich almost steps on the line of trolling.) Instead, you would be gentle and respectful to other individuals (because trying to seed an unfairness feeling at the contests would probably make some people feel bad or confused, and I bet you are aware of it) and comment on this in a more amicable way, or even by PM with the organizers to avoid generating a bad atmosphere.
I'm wondering why you're always trying to make other people's time harder, specially if such people is here just to make your forum experience brighter, such as helping to bring contests for you to be part of, or sharing their art at the contests, expecting to live a fair and exciting experience at the polls while racing for the cup against others. Personally, I don't think your attitude is as good as it could be, and I really wish you could be able to change it for better.
I would like to invite you to continue this conversation through PM if you consider that my reply didn't satisfied your concerns. Honestly, I don't belive other users expect and/or desire to read about this anymore.
