Not sure if this is exactly the correct place, but I was looking for some info on concept artists. I am attempting to seriously develop a game, putting all of my free time into it. I have given the pitch to a few friends and they liked it a lot, and am pitching it to a few more next week- I have the idea and have all of the story written up, along with ideas for the world and how I want them to look (similar to how WotC sends artists that paragraph describing what they want the image to look like, along with mood and all of that). However, besides that, I am a terrible artist.
So my question is with the limited resources I have to start this thing up, what would be the best way to get art done? I've never done anything like this, and I would like some art to start out with to give my ideas some life to the people who are helping doing the creating of the game, so I don't necessarily want to be locked into an employment type contract with anyone yet. Is there a good way to find someone to do that, or do I have to do a contract type offer for commissions?
Anyway, just doing as much research as I can on all of the different things I would need to make this thing, as I want it to be a serious game that I could market and not just some cheap flash game, so any help or input at all is greatly appreciated.
Hiring one or a few artists to develop some initial concept art as a means to pitch the full project and get better funding is probably the best way to go. Ideally that will require an agreement or contract of some sort but it doesn't have to be terribly complex.
Depending on how limited your resources are you may find someone willing to work for a combination of cash & MTG cards in trade.
I imagine you're intending on getting this game sold at some point, yes? PM me with some of the details of the game, and I may be willing to do some free concept work with the catch that I'll get a certain percentage of the final profit (called a royalty).
conceptart.org is going to be the place to go. A lot of industry professionals post there, as well as youngbloods looking to get their feet wet. I'm going to agree with Zombie Shakespeare; you'll want some initial art for a pitch of the game to get investors. Art doesn't come free, so you'll want to start thinking about outside funding.
