The aim of the Finite Damage Challenge is simple: Do as much damage (or cause as much loss of life) to an opponent in a single turn as possible, without the use of infinite combos. To make the game more interesting, here are some rules:
1) Try to stick with a 60 card deck. Playing 4 of every card in the game breaks the spirit of things.
1a) Research (of Research // Development) is banned. No skirting the deck size by chaining these together.
2) You have as many turns to set up as needed, within reason. No "I spend 900 turns putting charge counters on Gemstone Array" shenanigans.
3) The normal rules of Magic apply, unless written below otherwise, meaning you only have 20 life unless you increase it somehow.
4) You are goldfishing. Any permanents your opponent has in play or cards in any zone must be somehow donated to him.
5) For the purpose of this challenge, your opponent has infinite life. However, you may not abuse this fact with cards such as Heartless Hidetsugu.
6) There are no other players in this game. Consequently, you must survive at least until the point of the life loss.
7) This rule will be deleted in a matter of weeks, but this challenge uses post-M10 rules. (No mana burn is the only really relevant one).
I may add rules, as needed, if some unfair or unfun exploit arises.
Method: Flip the Ascendant at some point, then, after you draw your last card and play your last land, tap all of your mana. This makes 58x58, or 3364, G. Cast Hurricane, with X=3363.
Total Life Lost by Opponent: 3363
You don't have to follow this template, but the essentials are the contents of the deck, the method used, and the total life lost.

Fodder Cannon Step 1: Find your cousin. Step 2: Get your cousin in the cannon. Step 3: Find another cousin.
Method:
turn 1: Plains
turn 2: Forest, Wheel of Sun and Moon Enchanting Myself.
On each subsequent even-numbered turn, I pay a basic land.
On each subsequent odd-numbered turn, I play a bounce-land, bouncing the basic I played the turn before.
On turn 4, I play Upwelling with the 4 mana I have available.
Each subsequent turn I tap out to start filling my mana pool.
t5: 4 Mana (Basic, Bounce, Basic), play bounce
t6: 5 Mana (Basic, Bounce, Bounce), play bounce
t7: 7 Mana (Bounce, Bounce, Bounce, played Basic)
t8: 7 Mana (Bounce, Bounce, Bounce, Basic) play bounce
Each subsequent set of 2 turns, I will play one bounce land and add 1 extra mana to my mana pool. Playing 38 Bounce lands allows me to do this for 34 bounces, 68 turns, starting with turn 9.
/start math
2*(34*35)/2 = 34*35 = 1190 + 23 from before = 1213 mana in my pool.
/end math
Along the way, I'll use 20 of this mana to play 4 copies of Coat of Arms.
1193 in my mana pool. 4x Coat of arms in play.
In my hand/lined up in my library by the wheel:
2 Plains, 2 Forest, 4 Martial Coup, 4 Priest of Titania, 4 Mirrorweave.
Plains, Tap 38 bounces + Plains for 77 Mana
Play Martial Coup for 1278, emptying my pool.
Next turn, Plains, tap for 78 Mana,
Play Priest (76 left)
Play Mirrorweave, targeting Priest. (72 left)
Tap 1278 elves, each for 1279 mana. (1278*1279+72)
Play Martial Coup for 1634632
Next turn, Forest, tap for 79 Mana,
Play Priest(77)
Mirrorweave @ Priest (73)
Tap elves (1634632*1634633+73)
Martial Coup for 2672023410127
Next turn, Forest, tap for 80 Mana,
Play Priest(78)
Mirrorweave @ Priest (74)
Tap elves (2672023410127*2672023410128+74)
Martial Coup for 2672023410127
7.1397091 × 10^24 Soldiers
Next turn each attacks, getting +4/+4 for each soldier I control = (7.13*10^24)^2 *4 = 2.033476 × 10^50
Thats 200 Quindecillion Damage.
Note: I misplayed it a bit, this could be a few orders of magnitude bigger, but I think you get the point. Also, I can go infinite because wheel recurs all of my combo-cards, and I couldn't think of an easier way to recur the lands. I suppose I could drop a priest (I only used 3) for a naturalize, but just saying I wont go infinite is about the same.
I'll TRY the math there. For high numbers' sake, I'll pretend those 37 spells have a creature type that you chose with doors.
t10 - 20 Doubling Seasons in play.
t11 2097172 Doubling Seasons in play.
t12 ......and then I have trouble.
Apparently, that number becomes absurd, to the point that every online calculator I tried gave me INF as an answer.
I also neglected to calculate turn 11 properly...there are 1048596 Doubling Seasons in play after the FIRST Followed Footsteps trigger, so the second one makes 2^1048596 Doubling Seasons...which also comes up as INF.
So, let's try avoiding copying Doubling Season, as that is mind numbing.

2,562,527,232 damage for the entire turn or about 2.5 trillion damage to my opponant who in going through with their infinite life only said they were getting a trillion life foolish thing thought that would be enough. Still not up with the others but a good second try I think.
So, this does go infinite rather quickly. (due to the 4 doubling seasons.)
T1: Breeding Pool, take 2, Llanowar Elf
T2: Gaea's Cradle, tap Llanowar for Birchlore, tap Cradle for Priest.
T3: Forest, Tap Priest and forest for Slate of Ancestry, tap Llanowar for Llanowar, tap Llanowar and Burchlore for Llanowar (hand should be empty at this point)
T4: Forest. Tap 3 Llanowar and Forest, use Slate.
~~~~
Eventually, use the Artificial Evolution on the Words of Wilding and voice of the Woods to change them to Elves.
Then just use the Slate + Wilding to double your creatures (before seasons), and then start tapping 5 creatures to put another 8 into play from Voice.
When you get enough Elves, use Kamahl to give them all a stupidly high amount of +3/+3 buffs and trample.
W may only be paid with white mana. U may only be paid with blue mana. B may only be paid with black mana. R may only be paid with red mana. G may only be paid with green mana. C may only be paid with colorless mana. 1 may be paid with white, blue, black, red, green, or clolorless mana.
You wouldn't be able to do it exactly with all the computing power in the world. It grows at about the same rate as the Ackermann Function. Which is to say: sufficiently fast that even exponential notation quickly becomes useless.
Besides, it still doesn't beat the largest source of finite damage in the whole of Magic: Reverse the Sands!
Let's make it a bit more restrictive... a limited version! Block only cards. Play would have to be against a chump blocking deck or a massive lifegaining deck if we are going to allow behemoth sledge.
It appears the later turns will include 9 triggers of lifegain and 4 opportunities to profit off each of those triggers with cradle. This means 2^36X where X is the number of remaining turns once it is at peak performance.
Here's the exercise, try to optomize the plays turn 1-20. It may be more optimal for acceleration purposes to play more nobles... you tell me when.
4 Wall of Reverence
4 Cradle of Vitality
4 Behemoth Sledge (a stretch)
1 Noble Hierarch
1 Rhox War Monk
T1 Forest + Noble Hierarch
T2 Plains + Rhox War Monk
T3 Plains + Cradle
T4 Plains + Wall of Reverence
T5 Plains +
T6 Plains +
T7 Plains +
T8 Plains +
T9
.
.
.T53 or 54 = last turn depending on if you went first
(assumes no recursion effects to make game last indefinately such as blitz helion)
You've definitely got the right idea wth Sharding Sphinx - it's faster than both Mirror Sigil Sergeant and Mycoloth, but we can improve things from the current combo:
Also, I think your maths is wrong. Your number of 1/1 artifacts doesn't multiply by 9 each turn, it multiplies by your number of Sharding Sphixes, which itself rises every turn.
This new version provides 16 new Sharding Sphinxes each turn, so the number of tokens on turn n is some constant multiple of n factorial.
There are also lots of ways to get a one-off boost to our Sphinx count, such as Skill Borrower, Sedraxis Alchemist, Resounding Wave, Call to Hell etc. Plus we can use Tezzeret to multiply our damage by five (roughly).
If there a way to generate infinite mana in Alara Block? If so, we could add Filigree Angel and Cradle of Vitality. Oh, and maybe Sludge Striders for another x5 damage.
How is "finite" damage defined here. Can we use Time Sieve? If so, we can deal all of our damage by turn ten or so, which is pretty fast.
Nuts, you're right, forgot about the sac for Minion Reflector tokens. And the block doesn't have any way to lose the sac triggers, either.
Also, it seems to have really rubbishy mana tools. I can't see any way to make big mana.
In which case you've quoted me a bit out of context! I was referring to the later challenge to use Block only cards. So no Evolution Vat since it's not in Alara Block!
Elegant deck, nonetheless!
Not sure if it breaks the spirit of the contest, but in the artifact deck you could add time sieve in there to generate numerous turns extra. It would quickly become possible to have infinite turns to build more tokens to build more damage. The infinite loop has an opt out though, so pick a #.
First get all the cards out on the field (save for blood tribute)
I don't really care to figure out the total life gained by wall of shards by turn 50 (or whatever)
For this i will keep it at 20
Play beacon of immortality on your opponent 4 times > 160 life
Tap "vampire" for blood tributes kicker deal 80 damage gain "80 life"
80 life gained becomes 640 from the boon reflections and deals 2560 damage
Sac a Tainted Sigil 80+2560 damage taken so 2640 life gained x 16 = 42240
4x42240 damage from sanguine bond 168960 + 2560 damage taken thusfar
Sac Tainted Sigil Gain 171520 life x 16 = 2744320
4x2744320 damage from sanguine bond 2744320+42240 damage taken so far
Sac Tainted Sigil Gain 2786560 life x 16 = 44584960 x 4 = 178339840 damage
178339840+2786560=181126400 damage taken so far
Sacrifice Tainted Sigil Gain 181126400 life x 16 = 2898022400 x 4 damage through sanguine bond = 11592089600 +181126400 = 11773216000
Total damage = 11773216000
(would be more if I wanted to figure the life my opponent would have from wall of shards but I'm too lazy ;))
Note to assume that my opponent has unlimited life doesn't work for this combo because I would deal infinite damage times whatever it is....
Turn 1 - Play out the entire hand - You'll end turn with a Mycoloth that has 10 counters on it.
Turn 2 - Gaea's Cradle taps for 11 green, Draw Harmonize (52 in library)
Play Harmonize, (7 left) drawing Mycosynth Lattice, Evolution Vat and Tolarian Academy (49 left in library) Play Lattice (:symg: left), Play and tap Academy (14 :symu:) and then play and activate Evo Vat twice. Mycoloth ends turn with 44 +1/+1 counters on it.
At this point, you're getting a HUGE runaway acceleration of mana, tokens and +1/+1 counters on Mycoloth, but it's time to go Beyond The Impossible:
Turn 3: Draw Tidings, Tap Cradle for 55 mana. Play Tidings, which draws Doubling Season x4. (44 cards left in library) Play all 4 Seasons, then tap Academy (93 mana in pool) Activate Evo Vat 22 times, each activation puts 32x counters on Mycoloth. Turn ends with Mycoloth having ~5.7115 x 10^34 +1/+1 counters on it.
Your remaining library has 4 Coat of Arms which will be played out at some point, as well as something which gives your creatures haste (Concordant Crossroads works) After you draw your last card, play out your hand: 4 Berserks (cast first on Mycoloth pumped to maximum size via Evo Vat) and 4 Overwhelming Stampedes. Declare full attack with all your tokens.
1) Try to stick with a 60 card deck. Playing 4 of every card in the game breaks the spirit of things.
1a) Research (of Research // Development) is banned. No skirting the deck size by chaining these together.
2) You have as many turns to set up as needed, within reason. No "I spend 900 turns putting charge counters on Gemstone Array" shenanigans.
3) The normal rules of Magic apply, unless written below otherwise, meaning you only have 20 life unless you increase it somehow.
5) For the purpose of this challenge, your opponent has infinite life. However, you may not abuse this fact with cards such as Heartless Hidetsugu.
6) There are no other players in this game. Consequently, you must survive at least until the point of the life loss.
7) This rule will be deleted in a matter of weeks, but this challenge uses post-M10 rules. (No mana burn is the only really relevant one).
So, this does go infinite rather quickly. (due to the 4 doubling seasons.)
T1: Breeding Pool, take 2, Llanowar Elf
T2: Gaea's Cradle, tap Llanowar for Birchlore, tap Cradle for Priest.
T3: Forest, Tap Priest and forest for Slate of Ancestry, tap Llanowar for Llanowar, tap Llanowar and Burchlore for Llanowar (hand should be empty at this point)
T4: Forest. Tap 3 Llanowar and Forest, use Slate.
~~~~
Eventually, use the Artificial Evolution on the Words of Wilding and voice of the Woods to change them to Elves.
Then just use the Slate + Wilding to double your creatures (before seasons), and then start tapping 5 creatures to put another 8 into play from Voice.
When you get enough Elves, use Kamahl to give them all a stupidly high amount of +3/+3 buffs and trample.
You wouldn't be able to do it exactly with all the computing power in the world. It grows at about the same rate as the Ackermann Function. Which is to say: sufficiently fast that even exponential notation quickly becomes useless.
Besides, it still doesn't beat the largest source of finite damage in the whole of Magic: Reverse the Sands!

It appears the later turns will include 9 triggers of lifegain and 4 opportunities to profit off each of those triggers with cradle. This means 2^36X where X is the number of remaining turns once it is at peak performance.
Here's the exercise, try to optomize the plays turn 1-20. It may be more optimal for acceleration purposes to play more nobles... you tell me when.
4 Wall of Reverence
4 Cradle of Vitality
4 Behemoth Sledge (a stretch)
1 Noble Hierarch
1 Rhox War Monk
T1 Forest + Noble Hierarch
T2 Plains + Rhox War Monk
T3 Plains + Cradle
T4 Plains + Wall of Reverence
T5 Plains +
T6 Plains +
T7 Plains +
T8 Plains +
T9
.
.
.T53 or 54 = last turn depending on if you went first
(assumes no recursion effects to make game last indefinately such as blitz helion)
+4 Master Transmuter
+4 Fatestitcher
+4 Unbender Tine
Also, I think your maths is wrong. Your number of 1/1 artifacts doesn't multiply by 9 each turn, it multiplies by your number of Sharding Sphixes, which itself rises every turn.
This new version provides 16 new Sharding Sphinxes each turn, so the number of tokens on turn n is some constant multiple of n factorial.
There are also lots of ways to get a one-off boost to our Sphinx count, such as Skill Borrower, Sedraxis Alchemist, Resounding Wave, Call to Hell etc. Plus we can use Tezzeret to multiply our damage by five (roughly).
If there a way to generate infinite mana in Alara Block? If so, we could add Filigree Angel and Cradle of Vitality. Oh, and maybe Sludge Striders for another x5 damage.
How is "finite" damage defined here. Can we use Time Sieve? If so, we can deal all of our damage by turn ten or so, which is pretty fast.

Also, it seems to have really rubbishy mana tools. I can't see any way to make big mana.

In which case you've quoted me a bit out of context! I was referring to the later challenge to use Block only cards. So no Evolution Vat since it's not in Alara Block!
Elegant deck, nonetheless!

4x Sanguine Bond
4x Boon Reflection
4x Tainted Sigil
4x Wall of Shards
1x Blood Tribute
1x Vampire Creature
4x Beacon of Immortality
20x Swamp
18x Plains
First get all the cards out on the field (save for blood tribute)
I don't really care to figure out the total life gained by wall of shards by turn 50 (or whatever)
For this i will keep it at 20
Play beacon of immortality on your opponent 4 times > 160 life
Tap "vampire" for blood tributes kicker deal 80 damage gain "80 life"
80 life gained becomes 640 from the boon reflections and deals 2560 damage
Sac a Tainted Sigil 80+2560 damage taken so 2640 life gained x 16 = 42240
4x42240 damage from sanguine bond 168960 + 2560 damage taken thusfar
Sac Tainted Sigil Gain 171520 life x 16 = 2744320
4x2744320 damage from sanguine bond 2744320+42240 damage taken so far
Sac Tainted Sigil Gain 2786560 life x 16 = 44584960 x 4 = 178339840 damage
178339840+2786560=181126400 damage taken so far
Sacrifice Tainted Sigil Gain 181126400 life x 16 = 2898022400 x 4 damage through sanguine bond = 11592089600 +181126400 = 11773216000
Total damage = 11773216000
(would be more if I wanted to figure the life my opponent would have from wall of shards but I'm too lazy ;))
Note to assume that my opponent has unlimited life doesn't work for this combo because I would deal infinite damage times whatever it is....
Their turn 1 damage is expressed in Knuth's up arrow notation. And even then it takes up some space.
Opening hand
4 Ornithopters
1 Shield Sphere
1 Gaea's Cradle
1 Mycoloth
53 cards in library
Turn 1 - Play out the entire hand - You'll end turn with a Mycoloth that has 10 counters on it.
Turn 2 - Gaea's Cradle taps for 11 green, Draw Harmonize (52 in library)
Play Harmonize, (7 left) drawing Mycosynth Lattice, Evolution Vat and Tolarian Academy (49 left in library) Play Lattice (:symg: left), Play and tap Academy (14 :symu:) and then play and activate Evo Vat twice. Mycoloth ends turn with 44 +1/+1 counters on it.
At this point, you're getting a HUGE runaway acceleration of mana, tokens and +1/+1 counters on Mycoloth, but it's time to go Beyond The Impossible:
Turn 3: Draw Tidings, Tap Cradle for 55 mana. Play Tidings, which draws Doubling Season x4. (44 cards left in library) Play all 4 Seasons, then tap Academy (93 mana in pool) Activate Evo Vat 22 times, each activation puts 32x counters on Mycoloth. Turn ends with Mycoloth having ~5.7115 x 10^34 +1/+1 counters on it.
Your remaining library has 4 Coat of Arms which will be played out at some point, as well as something which gives your creatures haste (Concordant Crossroads works) After you draw your last card, play out your hand: 4 Berserks (cast first on Mycoloth pumped to maximum size via Evo Vat) and 4 Overwhelming Stampedes. Declare full attack with all your tokens.
Note to self: Your mafia theories are usually wrong, so don't act on them.
T2: Forest, Explore, Forest, Warcaller -- 2 Elves, Warcaller(0 counters)
T4: Forest, Elvish Archdruid -- 3 Elves, Warcaller(0 counters)
T3: Forest, Immaculate Magistrate, Doubling Season -- 4 Elves, Warcaller(0 counters)
T4: 2nd Doubling Season -- 8 Elves(4 tokens), Warcaller(32 counters)
T5: 3rd Doubling Season -- 40 Elves(36 tokens), Warcaller(356 counters)
T6: 4th Doubling Season -- 616 Elves(612 tokens), Warcaller(10212 counters)
T7: Heedless One -- 10409 Elves(10404 tokens), Warcaller(176756 counters)
T8: Overwhelming Stampede
Heedless One = 187166/187166
Rhys = 176758/176758
Warcaller = 176758/176758
Archdruid = 176758/176758
Magistrate = 176759/176759
Each token = 176758/176758
Heedless One = (187166 * 2) = 374,332
Others = ((176758 + 187166) * 10408) + 1 = 3,787,720,993
Total = 3,788,095,325
3.78 billion damage in 8 turns.
Spellbinder + Searing Wind/Savage Beating + Metathran Soldier = Win
Death's Shadow + Dead Reckoning + Stuffy Doll = Win
