You've heard all the rumors, and it's time to do something about them. There's a campaign going on against everything you hold sacred, and you can't let it go without a fight. Harry Potter Mafia is an item-based game. Throughout the game, many items of various types will pass into the hands of its players. This mechanic will be handled as follows: 1. Once during the night, if you started that night with an item, you may choose to give that item to another player. With all items, this may be done without using the item, unless otherwise specified via PM. However, only one item can be given away per night, unless otherwise specified. 2. If an item allows you to use an ability, using that ability precludes the passage of that item to another player that night, unless otherwise specified. If an item has a static effect, that effect will only be effective that night if ownership of the item is maintained for the entire duration of the night, unless otherwise specified. 3. No ability, item-based or not, may be used in the same night after an item is received or given, unless otherwise specified. 4. Only one ability may be used per night, regardless of how many to which you have access, unless otherwise specified. Static effects do not count as abilities. 5. If a player dies while owning an item, that item is removed from the game, unless otherwise specified.
This game has two moderators: myself, and Axelrod. For the moment, you may treat us both equally, but once night comes, you will have to send all night actions to a single player. Which player will be decided well in advance of that moment.

What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
It's the dawn of a new day, but the dawn of the new era of Voldemort's reign is still a few days off, at least. It's time to find and destroy the bad guys, guys.
Day 1 has started, so go out there and find someone to lynch!

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
Hmm.. well getting right down to business, haven't been with Loran in a game in a bit...so of course LaL.. Vote: Loran16

The day begins with every one getting up and shoving at each other to find the coffee. Tussles begin here and there, but no one really feels comfortable being the first to really discuss what you're here to do. Which is, of course, the business of killing each other.

Sorry to ruin the fun but I propose a cunning plan.
Okay it's not actually that cunning. What do you guys think of a pseudo Azplan ala Hats Mafia? i.e. one person is given all of the items one night, and catalogues what each item does, and who that item belonged to.
This is better than a mass claim because only one person knows who the items belong to, and thus information can be properly clamped down on. Additionally, the items will likely give clues to who is town and who is scum.
Recap: Someone gets all the items and the following morning, produces a list of who they believe is likely town, without giving specifics. If an item ability is too powerful for scum to have, then that item's original owner is likely a townie.
Possible problems that may arise that I thought about while typing this up:
1. Items disappear if the player dies, unless otherwise specified. If the player who we give the item to is unable to protect him/herself, we essentially end up having vanilla town against goons, and I assume that's bad.
2. We need to trust whoever gets the items. If the item-getter ends up being scum, the town casualties will be over 9000, or around there.
3. Good judgement is required. If the item-getter misinterprets an item incorrectly, we could clear scum by accident.
4. People could refuse to give their items. If we have majority agreement on the cunning plan and someone refuses to give their item away, we lynch him/her. Problems arise if more than one person refuses.
5. I've never played in a game this big and there might be more complicated roles than I understand/can think of, and thus this might not be as straightforward as hoped.
I just thought of this now, I want to know what you guys think. I hope I don't end up like Azrael did when he proposed the Azplan (for those of you who didn't read Hats Mafia, he got lynched by Tilde when Tilde used his hat powers to vote for Azrael x9 after everyone dropped their hats to the ground)
Now that I think about it my plan has lots of possible cons. What do you guys think? If it's a stupid idea don't hesitate to tell me.
EBWODP: OOOH I just got something good to add. Items are named, and so someone who knows HP flavour could easily determine if an item originates from someone evil or not.
Example: _________ has an EVIL WAND OF DESTRUCTIVE ANNIHILATION. Yeah okay that's scum.
And as previously mentioned in Hats Mafia, yes, we'd be giving up one night of abilities, but since everyone is turning vanilla, theoretically only one person will be nked, and there're lots of us, so it shouldn't hurt too much.
I hate that plan in Hats, and I equally (if not more) disagree with it here. First off, it is essentially a massclaim, where the scum learn what all the abilities the town has, and then who gets them.
Secondly, here, as far as I can tell, has the items move by pm, or otherwise: invisibly. So all the town will give their items to a certain player, and none of the scum are forced to.
Thirdly, as you pointed out, we lose all the items after that player dies, as opposed to those items falling to the ground. Bad idea.
Lastly, and perhaps the most obvious reason why this is a bad plan: the person who gains all of the items can only give them away one at a time. So, even if he got the knowledge on 20 or so items, he can use one and give away one every night, and that's it.
EWP: I also doubt items are so obviously named. And, just flavorfully, some good wizards own a few items that are evil.
Such as Dumbledore with the ultimate wand, or perhaps Ginny with Tom's Diary
1. Items disappear if the player dies, unless otherwise specified. If the player who we give the item to is unable to protect him/herself, we essentially end up having vanilla town against goons, and I assume that's bad.

Pretty much all of these problems make this waaay too risky.
We could end up with the vanilla vs goons as you say, but it could even be worse. We don't know if the mafia has normal kills or not, unless of course you know something I don't.

Hmmm, I completely forgot that the fact that they were sent by PM makes the process unauditable before night. And I don't actually know much HP flavour, so thanks Andelijah for pointing that out.
I don't like the plan myself either. The big difference, as Andelijah pointed out, between this game and hats is that everything takes place privately during night. We don't know who starts with items and who doesn't, and we don't have any way to force the scum to transfer their items around. Plus, we run the risk of losing everything if that player dies.

I guess my cunning plan was just bad =(
Don't sweat it...happens to the best of us.
Well, except for Puzzle, of course.

We also don't know how many items each player has in his/her possession, unlike Hat Mafia where everyone knew that everyone had one hat (I believe, haven't read that game much).
In the meantime, I'll vote: Jobie[/b]

Now, as other have pointed out there are many flaws to this plan. Another being how much info you released about your self in having faith the plan would work. Also, I believe that this game has been designed so that such an outcome would not come from a mass claim like this. Also, try to refrain from mentioning ongoing games, its a general policy that people like to follow over hear.

I definitely do not approve of this. Seems like a weak way to mass claim. Maybe in combination with a mass claim, as well as 1 person not getting all the items it could work, but we are probably better off just going through the normal motions than hoping to break the game. Not like this is a 6 man scumchat game.

Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone
To the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.
Too many unreliable factors: Have to be done during night, cannot rely on scums to do the same, don't know the exact number of items, can only give out one item per night, etc. etc.
EBWOP: Scum would lie, some role names have obvious connotations (Madam Pompfrey, any of the aurors, etc.), not to mention anyone with an alternate win con would have a field day.
Soft claims sound good, though one on age range sounds terribly difficult to implement.
Probably something like either student age (anywhere from Dennis Creevy [3 years under Harry] to Percy Weasley [4 years over Harry, but in Hogwarts for a while]) and adults (aurors, teachers, non-Jr. DE's, OOTP, MoM personnel)
Any possibility that a soft claim could hurt us badly? I just read Shaman Mafia as a suggestion from Chamber, and Puzzle blew the game wide open with a soft claim.

The day begins with every one getting up and shoving at each other to find the coffee. Tussles begin here and there, but no one really feels comfortable being the first to really discuss what you're here to do. Which is, of course, the business of killing each other.

I really mean this as a compliment, DYH is too cool for school.
Just for that, I'm keeping it on for another... say 17 posts from this one.

I WANT YOUR DEATH BARONS! Message me if you want to get rid of them!
I WANT YOUR DEATH BARONS! Message me if you want to get rid of them!

Pretty much all of these problems make this waaay too risky.
We could end up with the vanilla vs goons as you say, but it could even be worse. We don't know if the mafia has normal kills or not, unless of course you know something I don't.

I definitely do not approve of this. Seems like a weak way to mass claim. Maybe in combination with a mass claim, as well as 1 person not getting all the items it could work, but we are probably better off just going through the normal motions than hoping to break the game. Not like this is a 6 man scumchat game.
Too many unreliable factors: Have to be done during night, cannot rely on scums to do the same, don't know the exact number of items, can only give out one item per night, etc. etc.
Mass name claiming sounds fun though.
We'll make you an offer you can't refuse.

What do we gain from this? Counter claims?
Locking people into claims actually.
