I've been thinking about this all day, and I'm starting to question myself. I was 100% stone cold sure on Zionite in Meadows too and I was dead wrong there.
Plus, I started that behavioral comparison of Axelrod I told you about yesterday, and I have to be honest: a lot of it was making him seem pretty townie. There were plenty of differences between his game here and his scum game in Fleet Mafia. I still think he's scum, and I still find his reluctance to call me scum to be disquieting, but after much consideration I think we would be better served with a MMoD lynch today.
Accusations and counter-accusations fly fast and furious as the day proceeds. Fingers are pointed and voices are raised, and finally the blame settles on mystery meat of doom. His protestations of innocence are not heard, and soon words are replaced with deeds. When his soul is freed from his body, though, it is, while not untarnished, at least not evil. You have made another mistake, and mmod (Gull, Garaman Townie Negator) has paid the price. This cost is one that may hurt you all.
It is now Night 6. Night actions are due in 72 hours, at 1 am Eastern on Saturday, August 7th. If you have an optional night ability that you will not be using, please let me know this; that way I may be able to start the next day early.
ZeDorkSlipeur (Narinder Singh, Terran Townie Self-Protector) moved carefully through the halls, putting himself in harm's way, where he might be able to do some good. It wasn't long before he became aware of someone following him - shadowing him, and at a distance that didn't imply anything good. Rounding a corner, ZDS quickly swung himself up into an access panel that he had noted was missing on a previous night. As the other figure passed underneath, ZDS dropped back down, knocking him flat. Rolling him over quickly, ZDS found his assailant looking back up at him, and... smirking? He had just enough time to realize that he had been decoyed before the gun blast took him through the back.
--
Morning found the six remaining people on board gathered around ZDS' body. By now nobody could spare much time to mourn him, but the implications of his death took a moment to settle in, and everyone looked around, trying to decide what to do next. zindabad decided to take the initiative - he pulled out a gun and shot Emo_Pinata (Elia Malawsky, Terran Townie Evolutionary). Azrael turned his hypnotic powers onto tordeck (Sani, Garaman Townie Prankster), holding him in place long enough for Wrath_of_DoG to snap his neck. Leaving only Axelrod (Xarn, Garaman Townie Juvenile) - the youngest person on board, the one least able to take care of himself. Outnumbered and outclassed, he was unable to resist the combined assault of the remaining three scum.
Azrael (Durian, Garaman Mafia Dominator), zindabad (Evey, Garaman Mafia Overloader) and Wrath_of_DoG (Roel, Garaman Mafia Stowaway) looked around, smiling at the outcome. "Now," began Azrael, "we have some work to do."

The Fridtjof Nansen triggered multiple alerts when it blew past Earth's outer pickets with no message and no maneuvering. Ships from the Unification Space Force pursued it, matching velocities and boarding. What they found there shocked them - nearly two dozen bodies, only two survivors, and neither of those from the original crew. The main computers had been crashed hard, and with no knowledge of exactly how it took nearly a week after the Nansen had been returned to Earth orbit for details on its final voyage to be made available. By that time it was too late.
With nobody on Gateway Station aware of the existence of Garaman powers, it had been child's play for the three to escape. Azrael's domination abilities, zindabad's ability to tell outrageous lies with a straight face, Wrath_of_DoG's presence not being known to anyone - by the time a week had passed, they had made it to Earth and disappeared. The Age of Paranoia wouldn't properly begin for another two years, when the extent of their web of influence started to show, but the seeds had been sown. Garama had missed its chance to be reintegrated to human culture, and Earth... Earth had only just met those who would be its masters.
Spectator forum can be found here, and the mafia chat can be found here. Full setup can be found in the Files section of the spec forum. Further writeups will be coming later.
Rawr! What a fun game! Muchas gracias, RobRoy, for an interesting setup, my first serial killer role, and plenty of surprises. I had a lot of fun playing, and still enjoyed watching after I died.
I want to particularly mention that Zindabad played a stellar scum game; his play convinced me enough for me to "invite" him to join me the night I died. Imagine my surprise when WoD showed up to kill me instead.
ZDS has also risen high in my estimation; he made a lot of good observations this game, regardless of it ultimately being in vain.
Well right about Az and WoD, if only for his last bit against me. Wrong about ZDS. Was wary about Zind's claim but Axel's not connecting thing made me doubt it less.
Oh. Why did you have to NK me night 1??
I figured out WoD was scum. Zinda was hard to not realize he is scum. Azrael was scummy as hell. Only wrong read I had was axelrod.

Post-game writeup. Obviously the game was a little swingy, but I do like the setup. If I were to change it at all in retrospect, I would probably have added one more townie at a low power level, and given the Garaman SK a Powered ability of "your kill cannot be stopped" - Cyouni choosing a protected target on Night 1 really did hurt him. Other than that, I like the setup, although I would also appreciate hearing feedback from others.
The mafia started off in a bad way, with AI being the first lynch and Key also under heavy suspicion. This was quickly corrected due to ~Tilde~'s gambit - believing that he knew who was scum, he lied as a townie to get Toastboy lynched. This cost the town two mislynches, one of them on the nearest thing the town had to a doctor. This is even worse when you consider the lack of behavioural evidence the town got from the mislynches - you can't fault anyone for voting for either Toastboy or ~, and so his gambit cost the town a lot.
On the SK side, Cantripmancer died because he trusted the wrong person, allowing zindabad access to his shuttle on Night 3. Cyouni took out StormBlind that night, as he had to given SB's claim, but his choice of targets for a N4 investigation led directly to ZDS outing him and his lynch. Both were unfortunate for the person involved but also a result of choices that they made rather than random crosskills, and so I am content with both.
That leads to the last day of the game, when the mass claim went down. zindabad actually screwed up his false-claim - WoD had been connected to dC on Night 2, and zindabad claimed otherwise. Luckily for the scum, nobody noticed this discrepancy, and they were able to ride suspicion of mmod to a win.
Overall I am satisfied with the game, and feel that the scum played well. Thanks to everyone for playing, and to those who replaced in to help keep the game going.
...zindabad's ability to tell outrageous lies with a straight face...
Hah! Just call me Sailor Pluto, Inaba White Rabbit, the Eye of Sauron...
Good win. Az and I clashed a bit in scumchat - two dominant personalities on the same team can lead to that - but we held it together really well. The claim was wild - I regretted it 20 minutes later, even before WoD told me about the mistake I'd made - but I wasn't too worried. If I got lynched, the obvious conclusion the next day would be that I'd done it to save MMoD and he'd be lynched for the win.
Read the spec forum, but didn't find the mod notes on how his ability actually worked.
I felt like the first few days went pretty smoothly for me from a behavioral stance. After that I got busy and basically slouched on my laurels. By the last day, I was looking forward to a death-match between ZDS and Axel to try to win a natural lynch over a speed-kill in case Seppel was going to pull a return visit, but I guess the Axel/Az rematch will have to wait for another day.
He was town with a mistery ability. The ability got powerfull if he was connected.
The ability actually teleprted Seppel to safety if he would die. If he wasn't connected he would have been lost in space.

Hmm, I thought it was actually pretty obvious that Tilde was being Tilde there. For a while, I didn't think that we were going to pull that mislynch off, and it was a very delicate line to walk on pushing that through. Normally, I wouldn't go anywhere near a wagon like that as town. I was actually surprised we got the town to take that shot, without it coming back against us.
Maybe it would have, if more of the town's analysts had survived.
Well this has been highly unsatisfying, but I'm not really blaming anyone other than myself. I feel like I might have been able to do something at the end, but just couldn't put the time in, and sadly, no one else did either. Apparently ZDS was the most accurate in his reads, but his style is such that I just clashed with him all game. And that ending was just anti-climactic.
Haven't read the set-up, so nothing to complain about from that end (yet)

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
One more thing to state. I do not feel that the town made very good use of the core mechanic of the game, the Connection. Despite the comments on Day 1 about forcing people to burn Connections, the plan never actually went through. Some people also didn't make attempts to get Connected despite having strong reasons to do so - StormBlind and Zebi, for instance. Things might have been different had SB been given better info, or Zebi been able to kill someone.
I want to toss joboman in with ~Tilde~ as far as bad town plays are concerned. The town was going to lynch key, but joboman prevented the lynch for the sole purpose of vigging him later - forcing the town to look elsewhere.

I feel that had I been town OR Garaman, I would have pursued that with more force; I made a show of it, but I felt it didn't seem natural coming from a player who had stated he wasn't having anything to do with connections. For the curious, here were my notes/plans for falseclaims:
I am Eiji Hoshino, Terran Townie Ascetic
I was orphaned at a young age by a group of muggers and have harbored a heightened sense of vengeance ever since. Over the years, however, I’ve learned the art of meditation, which has successfully tempered that vengeance. The recent deaths have reawakened my feelings of injustice, and I have decided to channel the energies that meditation provides into powerful acts of destruction aimed at those I believe to be in the wrong.
Every other night, I may hide in the shuttle bay and no one may target me. If I do, the following night I may act as a vigilante and kill a player of my choice. In addition, each night that I hide away, I may provide another player with the combination to the shuttle bay, which allows that player to hide with me and not be the target of any abilities that night (I asked about the interaction and the response I got from the mod seemed to indicate that they might be able to use their abilities before joining me for the night, but it wasn’t clear.)
However, I am paranoid and extremely suspicious of the Garamen; if there aren’t more Garaman dead than Terrans, all my actions are anti-Garaman, which means I can only hide Terrans, only vig Garamen, and I can’t accept a connection. My character doesn’t trust this “Oh, we have ways of knowing who’s guilty but only after they’re dead” stuff.
N1 I invited E_P to join me, which worked out well as he played it extremely close to the vest, but I felt I had made an ally who could vouch for me late game.
N2 I killed Cyan and was a little dismayed that people thought "SK" with his death. Given the curiosity of a vig not vigging Tilde at that point, I had justification prepped:
"I thought about Tilde, but then remembered tha the claimed JoaT, and since he revealed that he was bluffing, if he has a 1-shot protective element, I thought there was a possibility he would use it on himself. Cyan had been lazy all day, and I didn't like his posts or wagon-hopping. He actually hammered Toastboy, and acted like he didn't realize it. Oh, and he was somewhat counter-claimed by E_P, whom I trust a LOT in this game."
Zindabad was an unfortunate N3 choice, but, as RR mentioned, I was done in by my bad read, which means that my downfall was my own fault.
I was particularly impressed with RR's creation of a serial killer who has the option to "benefit" the town. It really made it feel like I had a chance at it.
playing scums pretty hard. i pretty much froze up after i made the rules mistake early on then couldn't recover properly from there. It also didn't help that after i read anything i wrote, it sounded scummy, so i wouldn't post it...

Agreed. There's scum slips, and then there's gigantic townie screw-ups, and Tilde's was one of those. Players as experienced as Tilde, no matter what opinion you have of his ability, just don't suddenly announce on D2 that they have a scum result only to back off it in twilight as scum. They don't do it because they know what the obvious result will be and they know it isn't worth it.
This was a very similar result to LOTR II and the Tilde lynch was very similar to the D_V lynch in that game. In fact, I mentioned it in-thread:
There's part of me that says scum just aren't this blatant. I don't think anyone without inside information could have looked at D_V's lynch in LOTR II and said "well, there goes a townie", but meanwhile we the scumteam were laughing all the way to the bank. This may just be paranoia, but I can't shake the feeling we are about to head down the same road. Plus, I already identified the dichotomy between Tilde's town and scum behavior - as town, he is irrational and impulsive (see Hats) and as scum, he is calm and collected (see Manga). Which phenotype do we see in this situation?
How ironic if you are again on the scumteam and cautioning against his lynch because you know he's innocent. However, I see where your logic is coming from and I certainly don't advocate a quick lynch here. Whether the interim time is spent rereading or establishing information about connections, we need to be patient with this.
Ironic indeed.
***
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate playing scum, by the way?
EDIT: AI, no, I didn't. Connection cop just seemed like a role that it would have made sense for RR to have included.
EXTRA EDIT: I think I played DotA with you earlier today, RR.
It was a fun game. My role was different (yet fun to play) but I will put it out there, it felt like the scum where the only ones who saw how dangerous I was.
I enjoyed this game, my first real win as scum. I've been on winning scumteams before, but never actually survived to an endgame.
I think it does demonstrate the reasons why scum doublevoters are seriously imbalanced.
Zindabad, you should be glad I was your scumbuddy or I'd sooo have gotten you lynched for that last screwup.
I think this game also adds validity to the "WHY ARE YOU STILL ALIVE, AZ?" argument. If he's alive past Day 3 without a damn good role-related reason...
Seriously, that argument's bunk. It DOES happen every other game or so.
You have to be the most feared player on salvation, so any game you're alive past day 3 in means either you're scum, a really newbie scum team, or copious doc-protection, or some other form of protection.
You'd certainly have been my absolute first choice for nightkilling if you weren't my buddy in this game.
I pretty much wrote off the town and stopped reading after Cyouni's lynch, really. By that point the only realistic way the town had of getting back into the game would have been through Cyouni cross-killing mafia.
As I commented in the spectator forum, Key and WoD were all but blaring scum. Azrael was also pretty obvious once he stopped trying, but no one really picked up on that. -_-;;
Props to zindabad, though. Not only were you the only non-obvious mafia member, you covered up for the rest pretty damned well too.

This isn't the first scum game I've won after losing a teammate on D1. And I can think of a couple of others - Cubus's Normal for example. I wonder if there's a pattern?
I think it does demonstrate the reasons why scum doublevoters are seriously imbalanced.
Indeed; your ability made it a lot easier for the scum to win. I was actually a little surprised that you weren't under more suspicion simply because your character sneaked aboard the ship, but I guess that's just gaming the mod.

The Connection mechanic gave me some ideas, as well. As for your role, I still don't think I fully understand it.
I had certain attributes that varied, but if they stood still for a certain length of time they became permanent. I wish I figured it out a day earlier than I did, but I suppose I couldn't beat myself up over it. My final role was great:
Unpowered - Bodyguard
Powered - Bodyguard, plus when I died I could still vote.

Did you learn how to break connections because Zindabad broke the connection between the two of you that night? (Zinda, that was your initiation to break it, correct?)

Originally we had planned to use my ability to connect Axel to Az, but it didn't seem like we could get together in time to do it before the deadline, so I changed it to disconnecting E_P to make myself look more town.
It succeeded on both counts - Axel had no ability we could've used anyway.

You had a set list of attributes, and each day that you didn't have any use of Garaman powers (including making a Connection as Host) you would learn one of them. Additionally, your powers would mutate if you were involved in a Connection without having learned that particular aspect of your powers.
You were actually close to burning yourself out and becoming vanilla on N3 - if your submitted action had gone through, you would have. Fortunately for you, Azrael blocked you that night, saving your abilities. Unfortunately, you interpreted the deep sleep he put you in as your powers saving you from yourself, so you still didn't realize the need to rest in order to power up.

Yeah, looking back on it I realize that. That's why I was saying I wished I realized what was going on a day earlier.
I really, really liked this game. Not just for the fun setup, but because I really got into my role. Kella was a very disturbed Garaman and I had to play things out the way they would have - keeping secrets, smiling in the face of death, and using her powers irrationally.
I was laid to rest calling our 4 of the 5 scums (zindabad eluded me and ZDS took his plays). Az, I really should've gone for you much harder than I did. Like, I knew you were scum, I just knew I couldn't convince anyone to vote you. WoD might've been a bit easier.
Thanks, RobRoy. I've never been more connected to a mafia game than this one.

*nods* Yeah, I was glad we were able to put you away quickly, while you were vulnerable and discredited.
With you and DC gone, and later Kpaca, it didn't seem very likely that the remaining townies would want to summmon the willpower to go head-to-head, or get enough other players to sign on, if they did. Axel and ZDS would have been able to rally the town, but it didn't seem likely to happen.
Not enough leadership was the basic problem, I think. Not enough players willing to tackle any hard analysis.

I totally wouldn't have nabbed Zindabad or WOD, so props to them I guess.
I feel that had I been town OR Garaman, I would have pursued that with more force; I made a show of it, but I felt it didn't seem natural coming from a player who had stated he wasn't having anything to do with connections. For the curious, here were my notes/plans for falseclaims:
N2 I killed Cyan and was a little dismayed that people thought "SK" with his death. Given the curiosity of a vig not vigging Tilde at that point, I had justification prepped:
Zindabad was an unfortunate N3 choice, but, as RR mentioned, I was done in by my bad read, which means that my downfall was my own fault.
I was particularly impressed with RR's creation of a serial killer who has the option to "benefit" the town. It really made it feel like I had a chance at it.
Mafia Stats:
2/3 Loss(#28 Town Disgaea,)
1/3 Wins(#29 Chess replacement, #1 Town GCF)
Ironic indeed.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate playing scum, by the way?
EDIT: AI, no, I didn't. Connection cop just seemed like a role that it would have made sense for RR to have included.
EXTRA EDIT: I think I played DotA with you earlier today, RR.
"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."
Never again, Zinda...never again. You're on my hitlist.
You'd certainly have been my absolute first choice for nightkilling if you weren't my buddy in this game.
As I commented in the spectator forum, Key and WoD were all but blaring scum. Azrael was also pretty obvious once he stopped trying, but no one really picked up on that. -_-;;
Props to zindabad, though. Not only were you the only non-obvious mafia member, you covered up for the rest pretty damned well too.
Jund Fangirl; Few things can describe the bliss of the fangirl's cries fading to silence (broken by occasional munching sounds).
Grixis Emo; 'Why should I go out there? They're all uncaring zombies! *sniff* No one understands me...'
Bant Wageslave; Behind every successful knight is a corporate drudge doing his taxwork.
Naya Overenthusiast; Because there is such a thing as too much enthusiasm.
Not me, sorry.
Have I ever told you how much I disenjoy playing town lol.
The Family
Vengeance for Inheritance.
Same name, then.
This isn't the first scum game I've won after losing a teammate on D1. And I can think of a couple of others - Cubus's Normal for example. I wonder if there's a pattern?
"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."
LotR II?
Unpowered - Bodyguard
Powered - Bodyguard, plus when I died I could still vote.
Did you learn how to break connections because Zindabad broke the connection between the two of you that night? (Zinda, that was your initiation to break it, correct?)
Originally we had planned to use my ability to connect Axel to Az, but it didn't seem like we could get together in time to do it before the deadline, so I changed it to disconnecting E_P to make myself look more town.
It succeeded on both counts - Axel had no ability we could've used anyway.
"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."
@RR: If he had successfully bodyguarded (and died), would we have had a day with 3 scum and 3 town (because E_P would have still been able to vote)?
Edit: I guess he would have had to be connected, too, but had that happened, would the above scenario occurred?
DC, when's the new specialty going up?
Great game, RR. Wonderfully flavorful. I enjoyed reading it, and appreciate you letting me in the spec forum (although I didn't input much. Sorry)
