Oh, some might argue the definition, but the fact is that you are possessed of a large amount of inherent magical ability, far more than any normal person. Most of you also have similarly gifted friends, comrades, or lackeys, and eventually, every one of you managed to pierce the veil between realities, propelling yourself into the great unknown, setting off on the greatest quest anyone had ever known. Going - if you will permit - where no one had gone before.
Or so you thought.
Without exception, each of you was met by a group of similarly powered wizards. In the distant past, they explained, this kind of dimension-hopping had led to horrible wars, with entire planes of existence laid waste by arcane energies run amok. Finally, a group of survivors had banded together and formed a coalition to prevent this from happening again. They magically bound themselves to a compact not to raise arms against foreign worlds or each other, and developed the means to predict when a new thaumaturgist would break through into the space between realities. Each of the newcomers, then, was given the same choice you were. Sign the pact, and agree to restrain yourself while away from your homeworld - or fight the others. All of the others.
Each of you signed. Some gladly, grateful that the magic community was caring for those less fortunate; some grudgingly, giving up on plans of domination; some simply to buy time to plan and discover a way around the restrictions. It is because of those last that you have been gathered together now.
The agreement has been broken. The peace is shattered. It is time for war - magic against magic, mind against mind, until the heavens are shattered and the vanquished are cast down. The battle lines have been drawn, and what happens next... is up to you.
[1a] I expect you to follow the spirit of the rules as well as the letter. If you think you've found a loophole that will get you around a rule, and you try to exploit it, the most likely outcome is a modkill for you. Don't be afraid to PM me to ask if something's okay, but be prepared to hear "No."
[1b] If you believe I have made a mistake, or if you require clarification on anything, feel free to inquire about it either in-thread or via PM. I will respond in the same manner. Don't be surprised, though, if my response is "You already have all the information I am going to provide." Also, questions to the mod in-thread should be prefaced with Mod: in order to get my attention.
[1c] This game is intended to be played. Please make an effort to follow along and contribute on a regular basis. If you do not believe that you will be able to do so, contact me and I will see if I can get you replaced. I won't be happy, but it's better than having an inactive player in the game.
[1d] Once you are dead, you are dead. Do not post anything further - not even "Damn, I'm dead" or "Go town!"
[1e] Do not use your avatar, custom title, or sig to convey information - these are too easy to change. Personal artwork or smilies are okay, but should not be changed after being linked to, and should not be used to convey a hidden message of any kind.
[1f] Do not discuss the game with anyone unless your role PM specifically allows you to do so. This includes via e-mail or PM, or in real life.
Section 2: Role PMs
[2a] Role PMs contain several parts. The first line will welcome you to the game and tell you your character name, affiliation, role, and source material. For example:
Welcome to Powerful Wizard Mafia, RobRoy. You are Ganoes Paran, Vanilla Townie, from Stephen Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen.
The second paragraph in your role PM will have a brief background on your character, as they existed in the source material. All following paragraphs will be rules text. None of the PMs say anything about how you came to leave your own world and become part of this group.
[2b] You are allowed to quote from the first line of your role PM only. (Note that you can lie while doing so if you want.) Quoting from any other part of your role PM will be cause for immediate modkill. Any additional information that you want to reveal must be paraphrased - put into your own words, rather than mine.
[2c] The townie win condition is: "You win the game when there are no scum left alive."
Section 3: Mechanics
[3a] At night, nobody may post in this thread. You may not communicate with other players unless specifically informed in your role PM that you are allowed to. Some of you will have actions that can be taken at night; please try to get these actions to me promptly, including, if you have an optional action that you choose not to use, the choice to do nothing. Once all actions are in, result PMs from the night will be sent out and the morning scene will be posted.
[3b] During the day, players may talk freely by posting in this thread. Players who may communicate privately may continue to do so during the day. A day will end when the majority of players vote to lynch a person; this will put us into twilight, during which you may continue to discuss. Once the lynch scene is posted, all discussion must cease, as the game proceeds to night. Numbers required for lynch will be provided at the start of the day and with each votecount.
[3c] Votes must be bolded and must be in the form vote: RobRoy or vote: no lynch. If you are changing your vote, you do not need to unvote; however this can be used when you wish to not vote for anyone.
[3d] When a player dies, I will provide that character's name, affiliation, role, and source material in the death scene. No further information will be provided.
[3e] Never edit your posts - not even lightning edits for grammar, spelling or formatting screwups. Double- or triple-posting is preferred - within MTGSalvation rules, of course. Violation of this rule may result in modkill.
[3f] Never post in invisitext. Violation of this rule may also result in modkill.
[3g] There will be an automatic deadline announced in the morning scene for each day. If the deadline is reached, the day ends without a lynch. Deadlines may be extended at the mod's discretion.
[3h] You may vote not to lynch anyone. A majority vote: no lynch will end the day without a lynch.
Section 4: Starting the Game
[4a] Before the game starts, I will expect each player to PM me back once they receive their role PM to confirm receipt. Once they do, players who are able to communicate privately may do so.
[4b] Once all players have confirmed, or 24 hours have passed, I will announce in the thread that Day 1 has started. Once I have made this announcement the game will begin and you may begin posting in this thread.
Without warning, you find yourself in a grey antechamber of some kind. Catching your balance, you look around to see others blinking into existence, all apparently as surprised as you. As the calls for answers begin, you catch sight of a group at one side who are standing, white-faced, over a body. Rushing over, you find that the body is that of Wrath_of_DoG, the mage of longest standing in your peculiar guild. From the condition of his body, you can tell that he was assaulted magically, probably by multiple people. A suspicion beginning to form in your head, you confer with your fellows and confirm what this means: with the murder of one of your brethren by another, the Mafia provisions of the agreement have come into force, and you will not be allowed to return to your homes until the infection has been rooted out and eliminated.
Several of you conjure up comfortable couches and chairs, and others (under very watchful eyes) produce food and drink. As you pull the seating into a rough circle to begin the day, though, one more surprise reveals itself. A glowing ball of light begins to form in the middle of the circle, stabilizing into a sphere a foot across and then, seemingly, waiting. After a brief conference and some diagnostic dwoemers, you determine that this must have been conjured by one of you, and that it apparently requires additional power to do... well, whatever it's trying to do. Will you support it in its task before it fades away?
In addition to the normal voting, you can also vote either Magic: Yea or Magic: Nay to indicate your support or lack thereof for the waiting spell. This additional vote will be in effect for exactly one week. If there is a majority voting Yea at any time before noon Eastern on Wednesday, August 25th, the spell will succeed. If that time is reached without a majority, the spell will fail.
It is now Day 1. With 17 players alive, it is 9 votes to lynch. A deadline for the day will be given once the Magic vote has succeeded or failed. You may begin posting.
I am a french vanilla that knows what the magic does.
If there is a majority the 18th player will join the game as a vanilla townie. He is confirmed town for me. I can flavor claim if you want. I know the role name and series of the person who joins the game.
The person who will join the game knows that he will die if someone dies. That someone is me. He doesn't know that.
That is all continue.

I don't know if nom is town or scum. But I'd like to point out this type of behavior is his standard modus operandi.
Court Mafia: Day 1, hatch plan to KILL EVERYONE ELSE IN A SINGLE NIGHT, when the plan only allows him to hit 11 random players, ATTEMPTS TO FIRE ANYHOW (Roleblocked).
In other words....Nom is an impulsive player who doesn't think about planning long-term or listening to others. I wouldn't be surprised if he was town. At all.

Pulling this out of your hat (so to speak) in the first post seems like a ballsy play for a scum. Magic: Yea
With a majority of you providing additional power, the sphere of mystical energy floating in the middle of the room began to pulsate. Faster and faster it went, glowing more brightly, until it finally flared away to oblivion, leaving in its place a form. nacho wizard. A moment of silence passed while nacho wizard looked around him.
"Hey guys," he began, "what's going on in this thread?"
nacho wizard has now been added to the active player list. With 18 living players, it is now 10 votes to lynch. The deadline for Day 1 is set for three weeks from now, at 4 pm Eastern on Wednesday, September 8th.
Don't think vezo should've given out that last part about dying Information at all.
Fix'd
Also, Vote: Falkonn for liking the the worst part of the game, RVS.

:/ Is it common for "french vanilla" "known-info" roles like this to exist? Regardless, I concur that the dying element shouldn't have been revealed, but the move seems too brazen for a scumploy. However:
Ooo, I want to know if we'll be getting more of these "feed the glowing orb" choices in the game. Fun little element, but obviously something to be wary of, as there's no way that the mechanic is as one-sided as "every orb voted for = benefit to town".

:/ = :-/, which I don't associate with "unhappy," more of "dissatisfaction". I remember reading that surety is the antithesis of fun in Mafia, and I haven't run into a lot of "you know blah-info for sure at the start of the game" other than masons (which, granted, this sounds like a lover-mason combo). It seemed odd that RR would build in this mysterious orb element and give all the info about it to a single player. If true, then I would think that the optimal call would be to expose it as Vez did (without the death-combo part), which, again, ruins the "fun" of having a mysterious glowing orb. I guess I'm mod-gaming too much. <- Dissatisfaction.

I think vezok is mistaken about the whole dying thing, the PM I got doesn't mention such and it sounds like he thinks it should? Knowing vezok, he is probably misreading his flavor or making weird stuff up. That said, I'm very certain he is town, as this role makes no sense for scum.
Mmm, Vezo doing it again. I really don't like his playstyle. But this time he gets a pass as that would be tooo ballsy a play for scum and I don't think vezo is dumb/smart enough to try that gambit.

Does Vezok have a tendency to lie and act chaotic as pro town?
Does Vezok have a tendency to lie and act chaotic as pro town?
Well, the game I'm thinking of (Heroes), he was neutral and definitely misread his flavor and lied a lot, so while it's possible he doesn't do it as much as town, I really wouldn't give him much credit.
Does Vezok have a tendency to lie and act chaotic as pro town?
He has a tendency to post little and come off scummy, regardless of alignment.
The mismatch between Vezok's assertion of pseudo-lovers and Nacho's contesting that concept is befuddling, specifically because Vezok said that Nacho would know about it.

Well, in a game where someone is not town aligned I would expect them to life off their ass. Not so much town.
Posting little and coming off scummy is not the same as lying pro town. Does he lie pro town, make stuff up, "botch" flavor and role PM reads repeatedly?
As a pro town player, it makes no sense to reveal that if you die a confirmed town dies. You don't share that information. So either he's left out some key details or he made a misplay, if pro town. Hard for me to make any kind of judgment on Vez as I know nothing about him, so thus I ask questions.
If he's some kind of role that highly values survival (survivor, SK, etc.) letting that "slip" makes sense, as it likely ties up doctor protection for Vez, town not wanting to get 2 for 1'd via night kill.

I haven't played with him when he was town, but he reminds of this other guy. Back on MT, there was this dude named Mr. Sparkle. In a game, he had a one-shot super daycop (got entire role PM, basically), who misread his PM and thought he could do it as much as he wanted. This led to him claiming day 1 and then the next day was pretty awkward. I have a higher opinion of Mr. Sparkle than Vezok. Just sayin'.
Also, it might be a good idea if we didn't talk about this anymore.
The genie's already been let out of the bottle. Vez has spilled the beans already. Damage's been done. Cat's out of the cradle. Katy Perry kissed a girl.
Why do you think we ought to stop talking about this?
One problem of course for the scum motivation for doing that: trick doesn't last very long. Popping off Nacho removes the incentive to keep Vez alive indefinitely.
Alternatively, in retrospect, it's confusing to see Vez claim at all. It's likely the spell would've been cast anyway - hell, we didn't even get to see if casting it even went into doubt. It seems extremely unnecessary in multiple aspects, including the details like the french vanilla status and the willingness to give us his flavor. His response to the "why you'd claim" is essentially "yeah I won't do that again," a bizarre response.

wat. Scum try to lie as little as possible.
More lies = more chances to get caught.

Firstly, his response was to when I specifically mentioned the "dying when someone else" dies part, so his response is not that bizarre.
Secondly, I've played with him 1-2 times, and he's come off as a bit impulsive and IIRC, sometimes made little sense. He seems new (at least to me), and this seems like something that happened without much thought, rather than something with a scum motivation behind it.
So I don't really think vezo's claim is a lie or some sort of gambit (as what your posts sort of seem to imply or whatever it is you were trying to ask/imply).

Interesting point.
Assuming Vezo is a town role - There's signifigant drawbacks to his coming out with this immediately, most notably that it does paint a big target on him for the scum to try and kill (getting a 2-for-1). It also potentially ties up doc protection.
Assuming Vezo is a mafia role - The mafia do have daytalk in this game, so they could have come up with this as a bold tactic, since he can effectively use Nacho as a hostage to avoid being lynched/vigged. Also can tie up town roles (watcher and doc come to mind).
Assuming Vezo is neutral - I can't see him pulling this as a neutral role at all, unless there's a REALLY good role-related reason for him to.
Vezo offered to give the flavor for his role. I'd like to hear it. Can we have a show of hands for this?
Assuming Vezo is neutral - I can't see him pulling this as a neutral role at all, unless there's a REALLY good role-related reason for him to.
Why don't you think that a neutral-survivor type might do this? Yes, he paints a target on his head, but he also attracts protection.

I think that the conflicting information is significant enough that we need resolution, and the element that is important (the ability claim) has already been "outted". I'd be for him revealing the flavor elements.
I'm aware lying as little as possible is generally the best play.
If it makes you happier, I could rephrase it for you: "If someone lies off their ass, I would not expect them to be town and not be surprised if they were neutral/scum."

Firstly, his response was to when I specifically mentioned the "dying when someone else" dies part, so his response is not that bizarre.
Ehhhh.
Fair enough on the nitpick, I suppose.

Okay. Next time I will keep it to myself.

Plausible possible explanation. Of course the major monkey wrench here is the dispute between the two players.

So I don't really think vezo's claim is a lie or some sort of gambit (as what your posts sort of seem to imply or whatever it is you were trying to ask/imply).
My posts imply that I am internally debating what I think of Vezo's claim and exploring the possibilities.
...
I pretty much agree with Can't Trip. I'd like the flavor claim out of Vez too, given the conflict between him and Nacho.
My bad, read his post wrong, thought he said something like "Nacho dies when someone else dies, he doesn't know that", instead of what he actually said "When I die Nacho dies".
Mmm, Vezo doing it again. I really don't like his playstyle. But this time he gets a pass as that would be tooo ballsy a play for scum and I don't think vezo is dumb/smart enough to try that gambit.

Why do you think we ought to stop talking about this?
Because you are role fishing. I don't want Vezok to discuss the inconsistency with our respective PMs any further. What do you see as a benefit from that?
Why don't you think that a neutral-survivor type might do this? Yes, he paints a target on his head, but he also attracts protection.
Yes, clearly a survivor wants to make the mafia want to kill him in exchange for the doc maybe having his back. WAHT
I think that the conflicting information is significant enough that we need resolution, and the element that is important (the ability claim) has already been "outted". I'd be for him revealing the flavor elements.
No, it's not. You guys know that Vezok brought me into the game, and that's all the relevant info. What does a full claim with flavor accomplish? Not a thing, other than to satisfy your curiousity. Maybe his flavor is that he's invincible as long as I'm alive? MAYBE THIS IS WHY WE SHOULD STOP TALKING ABOUT, GENIUS.
vote: cantrip Other dude did this too, but I get worse vibes from this post.
Because you are role fishing. I don't want Vezok to discuss the inconsistency with our respective PMs any further. What do you see as a benefit from that?
Deciding if he's scum and lying about something screwed up?
Deciding if he's scum and lying about something screwed up?
Do you have some strong reason to suspect he's scum? Why can't he be town and lying? Are you town? If you say yes, clearly you should claim so we can decide if you are lying or not.
OR WE COULD JUST LET IT GO AND PLAY MAFIA THAT SOUNDS FUN

Magic: Yea; after Symbiote, I find myself agreeing with SB: If there's something unique in a game, we'd be both dullards and ingrates to ignore it.
Mod: Do we sense that the spell will resolve or be cast when it succeeds (when the majority is reached)?
Vote Ged for not voting anyone.

Vote: MAGIC YEA!
Don't think vezo should've given out that last part about dying.

Pulling this out of your hat (so to speak) in the first post seems like a ballsy play for a scum. Magic: Yea

Semi-random Vote: BG
I hope the magic thing doesn't destroy the random phase as I love the random phase.
P.S. Doing a google image search for powerful wizard is pretty hilarious apparently.

Just not updated yet?
Ooo, I want to know if we'll be getting more of these "feed the glowing orb" choices in the game. Fun little element, but obviously something to be wary of, as there's no way that the mechanic is as one-sided as "every orb voted for = benefit to town".
The player list has now been updated.
Why so unhappy?
...why was Vez's post suspicious?
The fact it's really convinient.
The fact he gave so much detail, when he didn't need to.
Touche.
Why semi-random? He hasn't even posted yet.
mama?

Well, the game I'm thinking of (Heroes), he was neutral and definitely misread his flavor and lied a lot, so while it's possible he doesn't do it as much as town, I really wouldn't give him much credit.
He has a tendency to post little and come off scummy, regardless of alignment.
The mismatch between Vezok's assertion of pseudo-lovers and Nacho's contesting that concept is befuddling, specifically because Vezok said that Nacho would know about it.
Why do you think we ought to stop talking about this?
Alternatively, in retrospect, it's confusing to see Vez claim at all. It's likely the spell would've been cast anyway - hell, we didn't even get to see if casting it even went into doubt. It seems extremely unnecessary in multiple aspects, including the details like the french vanilla status and the willingness to give us his flavor. His response to the "why you'd claim" is essentially "yeah I won't do that again," a bizarre response.
Note to self: Your mafia theories are usually wrong, so don't act on them.
If it makes you happier, I could rephrase it for you: "If someone lies off their ass, I would not expect them to be town and not be surprised if they were neutral/scum."
Ehhhh.
Fair enough on the nitpick, I suppose.
Plausible possible explanation. Of course the major monkey wrench here is the dispute between the two players.
Yeah I'd like clarification too.
And call me PK, I prefer that.
Is there some reason that you didn't make any mention of the Magic: Yea or Nay in this "first" post, let alone make a vote on it?
Is there some reason you didn't random vote? That seems particularly strange given -
this post.
Enlighten me, please.
V/LA: 3/21-3/24 & 3/27-3/29
Because you are role fishing. I don't want Vezok to discuss the inconsistency with our respective PMs any further. What do you see as a benefit from that?
Yes, clearly a survivor wants to make the mafia want to kill him in exchange for the doc maybe having his back. WAHT
