(2) Archonoid - kpaca, Emo_Pinata, DJ Catchem, DJ Catchem
Not Voting: Archonoid, Guardman, Jobie
Your numbers are dwindling, so it seems somehow even more personal this time as you walk Archonoid up to the gallows. After he's gone, you search his house and find he was Hardacre, Vanilla Townie. And so your numbers dwindle further.
It is now night 5. Night actions are due Monday, August 22nd though I'd really prefer them all in by the 21st as I'm leaving on a road trip on the 22nd. Don't worry, I'll still have internets, it'll just be less convenient to send out all those end of night PMs from the road. If all actions are in before the 22nd, day will start. If you have an action you're choosing not to use, please let me know of that as well.
Before anyone has even left the town square, a single gunshot rings in your ears. Everyone turns back to see who has fired.
DJ Catchem is lying on the ground, bullet in his tummy. Guardman AKA stands over him with a smoking revolver.
No one is quite sure what to do. Should you take him down? Tackle him? Aren't we all supposed to be in bed right now? But Guardman knows what to do. He reaches down to DJ's wallet and opens it up. DJ Catchem AKA Rachael, Mafia Goon lies dead and unmasked before you.
Guardman AKA Harold, Neutral Hitman lights a cigarette, eyes you all with a smile, and wanders off into the sunset. The rest of you look around, assured that all threats to your little town have now vanished.
Mafia
1. DJ Catchem - Female mafia goon. No abilities.
2. Archmage Eternal - Mafia watcher.
3. vezokpiraka - Mafia roleblocker.
4. zindabad - Mafia ally. Traditional cop role: can choose someone each night and learn their alignment.
Neutrals
5. Guardman - Hitman. Has a list of people he needs dead: [4] mafia ally, [12] vanilla town, and [8] the town roleblocker (knows character names of targets). Name cop. Has a one shot vig kill.
Town
6. Ecophagy - Bodyguard, bulletproof vest, needs [5] alive
7. Emo_Pinata - Coward. Can choose to be untargetable for the night, but can’t use ability two nights in a row.
8. poggydude - Prostitute. Roleblocks male targets
9. Arcadic - Lover. Can communicate with [10] privately at night. If [10] dies, commits suicide immediately.
10. DYH - Lover . Can communicate with [9] privately at night. If [9] dies, commits suicide immediately.
11. Wrath_Of_Dog - Motivator (target gets a bonus vote).
12. Lost_Profit - Census taker. Night 2 gets a list of how many players have each alignment.
13. RisingPhoenix - Vanilla.
14. Archonoid - Vanilla.
15. Jobie - Donating vig. Twice during the game can choose someone else at night. That player will gain a one shot vig kill. Can’t target himself.
16. ZeDorkSlipeur - Gunsmith. Chooses someone and learns if they have the ability to kill.
[Mafia Group PM]
[1], [2], and [3]: you are three members of this small, homegrown mafia. You will receive individual PMs describing any individual abilities you may or may not have.
At night you may communicate freely with each other, then choose one of you to kill someone. The person preforming the kill should PM me who their target is. If you are preforming the kill, you may take no other actions for that night.
You may also communicate with each other now before Day 1 begins.
Win Condition: you win when the number of living mafia members is at least half the number of living players. Please confirm by PM. Do not post in the thread until Day 1 has begun.
[1]
Rachael, Mafia Goon
You have no special abilities.
[2]
Tom, Mafia Watcher
Each night you can pick someone to follow. You will learn the names of anyone else who targets that player that night.
[3]
Steven, Mafia Roleblocker
Each night you can pick someone to beat up. That person will be roleblocked.
[4]
Keith, Mafia Ally and Cop
You don’t know who the mafia are, but you’re sympathetic to their cause and count towards their win condition (which is identical to yours).
In addition, each night you may choose a player. You will learn that player’s alignment.
Win Condition: you win when the number of living mafia members is at
least half the number of living players.
[5]
Harold, Neutral Hitman
You’ve been hired by someone to kill several people in this town. Their names are as follows:
Keith
Kelly
Hardacre
Each night you may investigate someone, learning their name. Once per game at night, you may kill one player. You may not use this ability on the same night that you investigate someone’s name. Finally, you know your brother Douglas is around and looking out for you.
Win Condition: kill everyone on your list, then survive until another team’s win condition is met. If all roles that conflict with the town’s win condition have been killed but you still haven’t killed everyone on your list, the game will not end until either you die or everyone on your list dies.
[6]
Douglas, Town Bodyguard
Each night you can choose a player to protect. If that player would be killed, you will be killed instead.
You also own a bullet proof vest. The first time you would be killed, the vest will be ruined instead and you will survive.
Finally, your brother Harold [player name] is in town. You promised your parents you’d look after him just before they died, and you consider it your duty to keep that promise. If Harold died, you don’t know what you’d do with yourself...
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town, and Harold must be
alive at the end of the game (even if you aren’t).
[MOD NOTE: Becomes vanilla (and loses vest) if Sammy dies and win condition changes to standard town win condition]
[7]
Edgar, Town Coward
Each night you may choose to hide in a closet. If you do, you are untargetable for that night. You may not use this ability two nights in a row.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[8]
Kelly, Town Prostitute
Each night you can choose another player to seduce. If that player is male, you will keep them occupied for the whole night, preventing them from using any actions. If that person is female, they will learn your identity and that you tried to target them, and you will not prevent them from going about their business.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[MOD NOTE: If targets either lover, will find the door locked and the
sounds of two people already boinking behind closed doors. Lovers
will not be notified of this.]
[9], [10]
Aimie, Town Lover and Brett, Town Lover
You two (Aimie AKA Arcadic and DYH AKA Brett) are hopelessly in love with each other. Because of this, you may communicate privately at night.
Also, if either of you die, the other will be so heartbroken that they will commit suicide during the next night. So if Aimie is killed night 2, Brett will kill himself during night 3. If Brett is lynched day 2, Aimie will kill herself night 2 (the night that immediately follows Brett's lynching).
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[11]
Max, Town Motivator
Each night you can drug someone else’s breakfast. That person will feel great after eating their morning meal, giving them a bonus vote for the rest of the day.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[12]
Jason, Census Taker
You work for city hall, which gives you certain privileges in times like these. During night 2, you will be given a list of how many unique win conditions exist in the game along with how many living players have each win condition. You will not be told what those win conditions are. So if there are two win conditions in the game, you might get the list [9, 3] meaning that there are 12 players left alive, 9 of them have one win condition, and 3 of them have the other.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[13]
Scott, Vanilla Townie
You have no abilities besides your vote.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[14]
Hardacre, Vanilla Townie
You have no abilities besides your vote.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[15]
Dwight, Town Donating Vigilante
You have a few guns and bullets, but you’re too cowardly to use them yourself. Twice during the game you can choose another player to give a gun loaded with a single round. That player will gain the ability to once during the game kill another player during the night. This ability can’t be used in addition to any other abilities the player may or may not have.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[16]
Casey, Town Gunsmith
Each night you can choose another player. You will learn if that player has an ability that let’s him kill another player.
Win Condition: Eliminate all threats to the town.
[MOD NOTE: [15]’s ability resolves before [16]’s, so if [15] and [16]
target the same person one night, that person will show up as having a
killing ability.]
Fun following along this game, although I wish the lovers hadn't needed to be revealed. Well played on Guardsman's part, but I don't think there were any glaring misplays.
It was your claim that tipped me off. You basically claimed Miller, yet this is the first we heard about it. Townfolk almost always claim Miller the first chance they post if they know. You held onto until the mass claim.
The only reason I waited until night to kill you is I needed Arch dead and he seemed the default lynch for today.

Yeah I cringed when I saw that. But no one said a word, why not? After that I thought we had it in the bag for sure.
Emo you have to be more determined. You had me but left me. I could not believe it when you came out voting Arch and not me. Good eye though.
Didn't know, but I did investigate you on the night I died, and was about to show up and tell everyone you were town.
Then you would've known I wasn't town, and you would've stopped trying to kill me.
...sigh.
No proly would have thought you were insane or something. Would have eventually tried to. Just be happy that I didn't get to pull the trigger...But I watched.

I had to try it, as I wasn't convinced there were no more information roles left. If it passed mass claim, all I had to do is wake up the next morning and I could have most likely taken it down.
Side note - Love to know why it seems like a scum tell to hold on to it...I don't see it. (A_E - I told you I was going to use it...why'd you let it go if you thought it was a bad call?)
Guardman - How does it play out in your mind if I claimed VT? I'm interested as to why you jumped to action with a pretty clear shot at the end game.

Because if you don't claim it right away it can be used as a cop out if/when you are investigated.
If you claimed vanilla town I probably would've killed you. Basically I didn't trust EP to leave me alone and I didn't trust Jobie not to follow EP, so I was going into win now mode, which just happened to work. Plus EP was either going to off me or off kpaca. And I thought the scum were going to either off Jobie or EP since they were pretty much confirmed. The only thing that your claim did for me was solidify in my mind you were scum.

That's exactly why I used it...in my mind, I was in protection mode because of the Name Cop reveal. I had already been investigated, and I wasn't totally convinced of your role as stated, so I went for something I could try to sell if something came out.
Although to be fair, I was trying to carry you into the last day. Arach, Jobie overnight, and hopefully Emo pulls the trigger on Kpaca as he should have.

congrats buddy, you were awesome, certainly MVS imho.
you never cease to impress me, looks like DYH was the only one who correctly identified you.
also this "miller always have to claim on D1" rule while correct in a vacuum cant be applied to new players.
i never heard of it before, had i been town miller on any of my previous games certainly i wouldnt have claimed it on D1 and i would hate to be lynched just because "miller must claim on D1".
you did well, certainly you didnt deserve this loss because i think you outplayed everyone, gman didnt really care who he was killing after arch died, he would won with mafia or town.

The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
. (A_E - I told you I was going to use it...why'd you let it go if you thought it was a bad call?)
-->DJ
Right. When I saw that I meant to say no way, you'll be instantly lynched. Those claims are suppose to be done in the first couple of posts. I was thinking of the the player base and who would be left and spaced it.
I mentioned claiming vanilla if someone else did. When I saw Arch do it I figured you were all set.
This game came from a combination of a lot of things. First was wanting to run a game in the 15-17 player range. I feel like this is a sweet spot for online mafia, at least on this site, because it allows you a lot more freedom in design and play than a mini without getting so bogged down on day 1. I find when I play in 20-some person games that I often just can't keep track of who all is in them until day 2 or even 3, so I decided my next game would just start with a number of players equal to how many I feel like I can keep track of.
From there I started thinking about individual roles I had lying around. I've always loved the mafia ally role (mafia member who doesn't know who the other mafia are and the mafia don't know exists) ever since I played it a bunch on fadebot in the MTGS IRC channel back in the days even before Xylbot. I know this role is pretty swingy; if you count it as mafia, then there's the chance the mafia will kill it off accidentally and be screwed. If you count it as something other than mafia, then there's the chance it'll just live through the endgame and win out of nowhere. I ended up counting it as an anti-town neutral, and I think that went pretty well.
I did want to put some safeguards in place, however. First was giving the mafia ally a cop role. I've always liked encouraging my players to make ballsy claims, and I tried as clearly as possible here to tell the mafia ally "hey, you can claim cop! Do it! Doooo it! You'll be cleared!" This obviously has the upside of clearing him... and the downside of clearing him since now his team is out to get him! A wonderful conundrum. Mainly though I wanted him to have the ability to search out his teammates. Leaving him completely blind seemed in poor taste.
The second thing I did was include the census taker role, tweaked to delay giving him the information because I didn't want to just hand over all that info right away. This gave the mafia group a chance to find out about the existence of their buddy since once he claims the mafia will notice that their team is off by one. I really wish I'd gotten to see what happened from this, but of course the census taker got lynched before getting his info. Pity.
Then there was the hitman / doctor (or Bodyguard, whatever) combo. I'd thought up this pair long ago and pondered over the best variant. Should the bodyguard be neutral? Should the hitman be a SK? Some other neutral? Eventually I decided on what you saw here, and I liked the results. Guardman is basically just a survivor since if he makes it to end game most of his targets will be dead, and then I hand him the one shot vig so he can make sure of that. But straight survivor is boring, and the extra requirement of the hitlist hopefully made the ride more enjoyable for him. Plus it's another safeguard against the mafia ally getting out of hand - just put him on the hitlist.
Finally, I came up with the donating vig role and loved it. It's like a vig but less swingy! Not only does the person who can use the shot have to find someone scummy, but the donating vig has to find the person he's donating to sane enough to warrant getting the bonus kill. I'm really happy with this design. Then as soon as I realized that [1] I wasn't including a town cop and [2] a gunsmith interacts with the donating vig beautifully since he starts getting "false" positives on people who had been donated to, another couple roles had fallen into place.
From there, I just filled in the rest of the roles with things I found interesting. Worth noting is that originally the game was actually 15 players, only growing to 16 when I added the lovers. They're basically just a hydra account that gets to keep it's accounts separate, so I only count them as 1 role.
Scum MVP: definitely DJ. It took a neutral role to take him down; he had everyone in the town convinced.
Town MVP: oddly enough, probably Guardman due to the same thing. Without him the town would've had a hard time getting DJ. Emo definitely deserves a mention specifically for vigging vez but also just playing well. He would've been the town's best hope for offing DJ if Guardman hadn't, though who knows if he would've done so. He chose to hide on the last night so the kill would've been out there.
To all aspiring designers who liked this game: if you choose to take one thing away from it, take away that you should keep your games small! I firmly believe this is the way of the future and an easy way to make your game just plain old better.
With the close of this game I'm going on a break from mafia. I'm entering senior year which is looking to be pretty busy, and I'm not sure I'll have time to keep up with a game. Look for me to make a return next spring as a player and whenever I float to the top of the normal queue as a mod. Unless, of course, I can get this Mostly Mute Monk Mafia game fast tracked...
Anyone with questions feel free to ask. I'm always happy to answer.
Woo! I was terribly worried when no-one even flinched at the miller claim. At least now we have an example of why a miller claim needs to be done early.
I was far to inactive and lurky this game. Still happy the town pulled this off in the end.
I replaced into this game due to my love of Cubus' normal, and I must say Ged's normal was an outstanding sequel! Here's to hoping for a third blandly named normal to round out an excellent series for me!
Mad props Gedder.

I was silent on the miller claim because I wanted to make sure I lived another day in order to get a lynch and a vig (hopefully two). I really lost all interest in lynching Guardman once it clicked he was Eco's brother.
I was starting to get nervous at the end, but Guardman made it easy. I'm just glad i was able to reverse Day 1 and nail the first scum out of seemingly left field.

I'm just glad I gave you the NK. I think that was one of the few good moves I made all game. I was very passive after the first couple days and I'm not sure why.

I was shocked that choosing to not hide Night 1 resulted in getting a vig shot. I was so happy and excited I think I would have voted for any popular wagon once the vez one died just to use it.
EDIT
It was my first vig shot I've gotten in any game.
EDIT AGAIN
Also, DJC did a great job. Really great. Actually this is the first game where I feel everyone played well, the mod was great, and the roles were great.

My only fear was that you were scum (ala Ximbad's role in 8-bit mafia) and that you killed Vezok because he would end up getting lynched eventually and you hedged your bets.

Apologies for having to bail on the game - it's completely out of character for me, but real life just REALLY got in the way.
Glad to see I was totally right about DJ Catchem, though. That's really all I recall focusing on during the time I was playing.
Not surprised to find out zindabad was scum, too, after all he was the one trying to rail the Catchem trail to Emo, IIRC.
Good work, Guardman and town!
I didn't play as though I was scum, though...or at least I didn't think I was doing it. I was scumhunting because I was on a mission to find a scum so I could investigate him and tell everyone he was town. I legitimately thought both E_P and WoD could've been scum at some points during my attacks on them, and I also 100% believed that JTM was scum.
AE, I figured out during the Ecophagy lynch (which was pretty bad, I must say.) DJC I never got close to, same with vezok.
p.s. You seem to have made a spelling error in your above post. Corrected that for you.
haha, did everyone let the Zindy thing go once I left?
And were you a disconnected scum? Sorry, I just looked at the dead list and totally missed that, if so. :embarrassed:
Edit: Literally all I can remember from this game (and I obviously haven't caught up to read it yet) was being 99.99% sure DJC was scum for his antics with Vezok. Who I now also see was scum. That totally would have all but cleared him (Vezok) in my eyes, so the gambit wouldn't have gone for naught had I been around and able to talk people into a DJC lynch.
We had it in the bag after that amazing Bus against DJC.
Gman SK. I suspected something wasn't all right but I thought I was just thinking weird things.
I've been in too many games as a neutral with you. Though I also have to say I have my best win percentage as neutrals... I feel like a more righteous kpaca.
Does anyone have comments on my play? I feel that my lynch was pretty bad and my case on AE was pretty strong - what was I doing wrong, or was it just a combination of scum, arch's omgus, wod's tunnel vision and...kpaca.

Sweet game Ged
Cmon, it wash my excellent play of reversal:cool2:
I thought you had me a few times. All I had was what you were accusing me of. Fence sitting. Plus DJ helped out immensely. It hurt you that he was so looked upon as town. But yeah, when Vez flipped I was like uh-oh. Plus it helped that you came out voting Arch and switched after Emo voted me. Thats all the ammo I had. Thought I was a goner.

Sweet game Ged
Zindy was deflecting away from your wagon SO HARD I just couldn't believe that you weren't his scumbuddy. Good to see I was right about him, at least.
When zindabad said the "65% scum" line about AE with no vote on either wagon I was ready to lynch him even as the cop. I just wanted AE to flip scum first.
The truth about that is that I already figured AE was scum, so didn't want him lynched because he was my ally, but also didn't want Ecophagy lynched, because he was supposed to protect me (from my own team. :-/)
I tried to make something happen with either WoD or kpaca but it just wasn't on. Oh well.

well, as I repeatedly said, you never made, or showed any interest in making a case on me, which is one of the biggest reasons I had you pegged hard.

Win Condition: kill everyone on your list, then survive until another team’s win condition is met. If all roles that conflict with the town’s win condition have been killed but you still haven’t killed everyone on your list, the game will not end until either you die or everyone on your list dies.

Fun game Ged. I thought we had it, though.
"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."
The only reason I waited until night to kill you is I needed Arch dead and he seemed the default lynch for today.
No I have a problem killing my own team. Have to work on that. Thought for sure when Vez died I was gone.
What the hell. So did you get to win or not? I was having fun watching you get block. Then you had to die. And you died first!!
Yeah I cringed when I saw that. But no one said a word, why not? After that I thought we had it in the bag for sure.
Emo you have to be more determined. You had me but left me. I could not believe it when you came out voting Arch and not me. Good eye though.
They hate us cause they ain't us.
Thanks for the fun game Ged.
They hate us cause they ain't us.
Didn't know, but I did investigate you on the night I died, and was about to show up and tell everyone you were town.
Then you would've known I wasn't town, and you would've stopped trying to kill me.
...sigh.
"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."

-->DJ
Honestly I was surprised nobody caught onto that either. I just let it slide because I wanted them to lynch Arch.
Congrats either way!

the setup was awesome, the players were awesome, i was hooked from beginning to the end.
congrats buddy, you were awesome, certainly MVS imho.
you never cease to impress me, looks like DYH was the only one who correctly identified you.
also this "miller always have to claim on D1" rule while correct in a vacuum cant be applied to new players.
i never heard of it before, had i been town miller on any of my previous games certainly i wouldnt have claimed it on D1 and i would hate to be lynched just because "miller must claim on D1".
you did well, certainly you didnt deserve this loss because i think you outplayed everyone, gman didnt really care who he was killing after arch died, he would won with mafia or town.
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
They hate us cause they ain't us.
And thanks again, A_E. Looks like I wouldv'e been hit no matter what I did. Ah well.
Great game, Ged! Thanks again.

Thoughts on the game's design:
I was far to inactive and lurky this game. Still happy the town pulled this off in the end.
My wife was on MTV with this video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUutIZg2EpU
Mad props Gedder.

EDIT
It was my first vig shot I've gotten in any game.
EDIT AGAIN
Also, DJC did a great job. Really great. Actually this is the first game where I feel everyone played well, the mod was great, and the roles were great.
Ged awesome job tons of fun and thank you for allowing me to replace into the game. =)
My only fear was that you were scum (ala Ximbad's role in 8-bit mafia) and that you killed Vezok because he would end up getting lynched eventually and you hedged your bets.

Glad to see I was totally right about DJ Catchem, though. That's really all I recall focusing on during the time I was playing.
Not surprised to find out Zindy was scum, too, after all he was the one trying to rail the Catchem trail to Emo, IIRC.
Good work, Guardman and town!
Edit: Does someone have the spectator link? (Sorry, DRey, I don't seem to have it.)
V/LA: 3/21-3/24 & 3/27-3/29
I didn't play as though I was scum, though...or at least I didn't think I was doing it. I was scumhunting because I was on a mission to find a scum so I could investigate him and tell everyone he was town. I legitimately thought both E_P and WoD could've been scum at some points during my attacks on them, and I also 100% believed that JTM was scum.
AE, I figured out during the Ecophagy lynch (which was pretty bad, I must say.) DJC I never got close to, same with vezok.
p.s. You seem to have made a spelling error in your above post. Corrected that for you.
"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."
V/LA: 3/21-3/24 & 3/27-3/29
And yes, zindy was a disconnected scum.
We had it in the bag after that amazing Bus against DJC.
Gman SK. I suspected something wasn't all right but I thought I was just thinking weird things.
Thanks to DNC at Heroes of the plane studios for this awesome sig and SGT_Chubbz for the awesome avy.

They hate us cause they ain't us.
I tried to make something happen with either WoD or kpaca but it just wasn't on. Oh well.
