Given the current empty state of the Normal queue, we are running a PCQ-style call for Normal games to repopulate the list. This event will be split into two parts: a proposal phase and a judging phase.
The proposal stage will start now and last about 4 weeks, and anyone may submit as many game ideas as they like (making a new post for each one). These games may be in any state of development, from completed and reviewed to a mere drawing board sketch. The aim of this initial stage is for people to reveal their ideas and to start working on their game and work up some hype, while joining up with collaborators and reviewers.
For the Judgement stage, each submitter from the first stage must choose one game to officially submit to the competition. The game to submit MUST have at least gone through a first-stage review in order to qualify. The winning game will be chosen in this stage through a combination of popular vote and a judge panel consisting of the Council. The Normal list will then be populated with the entered games in result order, with the winning game the first to fire.
Judges will be using a criteria based on flavour quality, balance, elegance, and how enjoyable the game looks to play!
When submitting a game, please provide the following information:
Game Name
Host(s)
Reviewer(s)
Current stage of development
Number of Players
Deadline Lengths
A technical overview of the game (Complexity, aims, public knowledge like "no neutrals", etc.)
A flavour overview
One post per game, and do try to keep it updated!
Remember that Normals are intended as traditional games of mafia, and must adhere to the following rules:
No additional rules which fundamentally alter the game.
No alignment changes.
No more than one Mafia team.
No cults, Jesters, or other weird neutrals.
Particularly unusual roles of any alignment are subject to reviewer discretion.
No roles with infeasible win conditions.
No voting after death. Other post-death abilities are subject to reviewer discretion.
No players outside of the game or on the replacement list may have a role or any effect upon the game.
Anyone willing to help review these games should make themselves known. I am personally happy to review basically anything, and am also very keen to act as second reviewer to help out inexperienced reviewers. If you're new to reviewing, I recommend my own article on the subject.
I'm available for reviewing games as well, as a first or second look. If you're having trouble finding a "balanced setup" for role designations, I personally use Xylbot on the Mafia IRC channel to generate a decent structure, then change certain roles based on preference. Its easy to swap one role for another similar role, but harder to go from one to 12 roles and still maintain balance along the way. I can't wait to see your ideas; good luck to everyone!
Game Name: Mistborn Mafia Host: Prophylaxis Reviewer: 1 Current stage of development: Everything but flavor done. Reviewed. Number of Players: 16 Deadline Lengths: Two weeks A technical overview of the game: Low powered, "Normal" normal. I wouldn't describe the setup as having cookie cutter roles, but it's certainly nowhere close to bizarre. A flavour overview: Based off of the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. Ruin has been released from the Well of Ascension and the Deepness has risen once again. Can the Hero of Ages save the people of Scadrial from the mists and the newly emerged god of destruction?
Game Name: Low Fantasy Mafia Host: Ecophagy Reviewer: Desperately Seeking! Current stage of development: First Draft Number of Players: 16, subject to change Deadline Lengths: 2 weeks/48 hours A technical overview of the game: Instead of Eco's traditional bleakness and moralistic shades of grey, this game is intended to be a silly and fun parody of classic "high fantasy". Complexity level will be reasonably low (but with plenty of imagination), characters entertaining, jokes overplayed, and the plot fast and loose. A flavour overview: The king of the realm has hosted an enormous feast for the occasion of his birthday, but late into the night he went and mysteriously kicked the bucket. With his cartoonishly evil younger brother poised to gain absolute power, the conspiracy is eye-rollingly obvious. Can the remaining feasters fight off alcohol poisoning and whatever was in the fish course to unmask the prince's lackeys and bring him to justice? Or will the prince seize the throne and bring the kingdom to ruin with his poorly thought-out economic policies and penchant for murdering people who disagree with him?
A month has passed, and with only three submissions, it's time to sadly bring this to a close. Due to the lack of entries, there will not be a second judging phase. Games will join the hosting list as usual, and we'll have to hope that by the time they run out more hosts will feel the desire to run a game.
Once I actually play a few games and get a better feel for forum based Mafia I would love to host one, I am just not ready yet. One think I think might help doing a competition like this would be a more eye catching title.
