Do you buy books online, use Google, or download to an Ipod? These activities will be hurt if Congress passes a radical law that gives giant corporations more control over the Internet.
Internet providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. Amazon.com doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to work more properly on your computer.
Politicians don't think we are paying attention to this issue. Many of them take campaign checks from big telecom companies and are on the verge of selling out to people like AT&T's CEO, who openly says, "The internet can't be free."
The free and open Internet is under seige--can you sign this petition letting your member of Congress know you support preserving Network Neutrality? Click here:
This is ridiculous. I cannot do anything about this, as I do not live in the States, but I find it appaling. Would they be able to do this in other countries?
Why make it so complex? How about we just don't sign up for ISPs that make our favorite sites slower and we boycott companies that engage in these practices?
Unless congress has granted them monopoly privileges (which they may have) this approach should work just fine.

Not how it works...
When you sign up for an ISP, if I remember correctly, you're still going through other ones to get to your site. ISP's get most of their money from getting bandwith from other ISP's... It doesn't matter which ISP you prefer, they can still bandwith throttle you into oblivion.
(btw, if you do have something that could be a little more accurate, since I'm pulling this off the top of my head, feel free to call me out on it)
That being said... 1984 has been for naught. I wonder how this will factor with equal protection under the law?

Because relying on such an approach rather than law could pretty much never hope to eliminate such practices.
In any case, ISPs, like many other things, do not operate well as a purely free market, primarily because of the huge barriers to entry. And allowing companies to "buy out" ISPs also hurts the free market in other industries by creating larger barriers to entry.

Don't we already pay bills? Does this mean that I have to pay MORE to access a site, or does this mean that I have to salvage more of my information away?
I don't really like it too much (even if my questions above are probably completely stupid and somewhat ridiculous). The companies should just leave that amendment be.
This is absolutely rediculous. Our government should not allow this travesty against our rights. This is an outrage. Hopefully, our government is smart enough not to do this, if they do they'll be doing something unconstitutional

Erm... I don't really like the idea of putting my address down for a petition... and it won't let me just sign my name and email :-/. Oh well, i just put N/A for my actual address...
This makes me want to move to another country even more...

You have to be a registered voter with a residential address for this petition signing to mean anything to the congressman in your area.
Yes, this is why I did it in my fathers name becuase I am not old enough to vote, however, I am more edjucated than some adults on the topic of politics. This act is completely absurd though.
yeah - obviously I disagree with you, John. Spam Warning!.....Amazing - even in a forum where posts don't count, there's spam. That proves that getting rid of the post-count won't help getting rid of spam! Thans for this excellent example! - Craven
I guess if you live in a Democrat state you can hold out hope against this, but, Republicans love stuff like this, it's just more money in their pockets.
AT&T, Verizon etc, only want to create this because they're losing money(and customers) hand over fist to cable. I pay less for cable with Comcast than I would have for DSL with Verizon. Granted, I get a 6 month special, but when that's over, it'll cost the exact same as DSL would have, and cable is obviously significantly(like the difference is ridiculous) faster than DSL. Plus, alot of the cable companies are ALSO offering digital phone service now..when you can get every phone feature, and voicemail, and free nationwide long distance for 39.99, it pretty much screws phone companies completely.

If they found a way to make their service comparable then they might have a chance...
