So I was thinking about getting a laptop for school and such things. I will only be using it for word processing, internet and the usual stuff, no gaming on it. I am not very computer savy so I would love to hear any advice you can give me. What kinds of computers should I be looking at? Where should I buy them? How much should I expect to pay (The less expensive the better)? Thanks in advance for your responses.
I would advise against getting a dell, most of my friends who have a dell say they are garbage.

I think a simple "I love you dad" would work much better.

Regarding your dad, do you apologize to him after you reject his ideas? Like, a heartfelt, "I'm sorry, Dad, I didn't mean to be a **** like that." If you take the time to let him know that you didn't mean to be a ****, and explain why his suggestion wouldn't work, it'd probably go a long way. If you haven't apologized for being a **** before, do it now.
I'd actually recommend a dell, contrary to what the first poster said, their laptops are pretty good quality. I'd choose this computer. When you go customize, make sure you choose a core 2 duo processor as your processor.

I'd have to agree here; my friend has a Dell which he had to send in for repairs. They took 2 months longer than expected, and now the battery still only lasts about... not very long.
Dell Inspiron laptops can be a bit flaky. The Latitude line costs more, but is rock solid. A few models are still shipping with Windows XP which I would definitely recommend sticking with for now.

I am no longer on MTGS staff, so please don't contact me asking me to do staff things. :|
Do NOT get a Toshiba. I got a top-of-the-line one and it is sitting broken next to me ATM because of the last time I talked with tech support ... I'm returned the thing twice and it broke again. I think out of 3 computers, I've been able to use the thing for around 4 months.

Abolutely do not get a Dell. They are not reliable at all, and their customer service is the worst thing ever. HP's are much different.
I would recommend a Macbook. For 999$, you get a very durable and reliable computer with a nice OS (Avoid Vista at all costs). Then, you can always run Windows on it if you need to. My Macbook is very fast and does most things without any pauses.
Maybe you'll get Archenemy cards in your Duel Decks From The Vault: Deck Builder's Toolkit All-Foil Duels of the Planeswalkers Downloadable Content Expansion (Tactics Edition).
Thanks for all the help so far. At this point I don't know if I have the budget for a new a laptop, or a need for a new one. Is it even worth buying older/used laptops or should I just wait until I can afford something new?

I would not recommend any older laptops, because they are so slow compared to newer ones. Besides, they will be outdated faster. Check into refurbished products. That's where I always check for new computers.

Does it really matter if it's outdated if it does what he needs it to do? I've seen all but one person in this thread recommend a thousand dollar laptop. Why? Read the OP; he doesn't need a thousand dollar laptop.
I've been recommending this laptop to most of my customers that don't need a thousand dollar laptop, and that one's $600 after MIRs. Price for specs, it's really hard to beat and I spend 4 to 8 hours a day at work, selling laptops.
Regarding older/used laptops, of course it's contingent upon your budget and how badly beat up the used laptop in question is. It's a risk/reward deal, in my honest opinion it's not usually a risk worth taking as they won't generally come with warranties.
