Can't say this news took me by surprise. Sudden? Yes. Shocking? No.
As many have said, the last years of his life have just been weird and it would be naive to believe that he was healthy. I never got how the world could have been taken by such an androgynous man when such qualities are taboo nowadays. And I can't honestly say I ever liked his voice.
But enough of all that... Rest in peace. Michael Jackson lead an intriguing life and his legacy will be remembered. Just wait when they come back with the autopsy and the Marilyn Monroe style conspiracy theories start to float around.
Eventually, I suspect the plastic surgery overdoses, the baby-dangling incident, and the allegations of pedophilia will all be more or less forgotten; and MJ's legacy will be simply that of one of the most influential figures in the history of American (and possibly world) music.
I love Ideal responses like this. When it all comes down to it, it is either A) the worst of a person's lifetime, or B) the end of a person's fame that is remembered. Unfortunately for MJ, these both happened at the same time. History usually isn't kind when people who do good things turn around and do bad things (whether or not the molestation is true, he will be remembered for it). His songs will undoubtedly be remembered with good connotations, but he will not.
Sorry if I overreacted, but it's just so annoying to have an RIP thread and always have someone come in with that attitude. This isn't really the place to discuss your feelings on how mankind views the loss of a life, it's a place to honor and remember one of the most influential musicians ever.
I wasn't meaning to piss you off, was just stating a simple view that is actually shared by many people. Also I didn't see RIP in the title so don't think it's a RIP thread. Just figured it was an announcement and therefore open to any comments on such an announcement. Also I find him being one of the most influential musicians to be kinda debatable. He made some good stuff, but made terrible stuff too. An influential person really needs to influence, and I really just don't see it with him. Bono is influential (still think he's self centered and full of it, but I can admit that he is doing things to change the world), Freddy Mercury was influential. The beatles were influential. All of them addressed issues in their times and brought purpose and meaning to their music. Micheal Jackson just simply sang well and was a cute little kid. If that was the basis of influential Miley Cirus is the goddess of all music everywhere.

I think to argue that he wasn't influential is crazy. Maybe to discuss HOW influential is fair. Elvis Presley made music I can't stand. Does that mean he wasn't influential? Not at all. Jackson's greatest stuff was well after he was a kid (argueably) but to say Thriller wasn't influential... Top Selling Record of All Time Worldwide?
50 Million Records for one album would like to speak with you.
Influential doesn't mean they're doing things for the world. It means they INFLUENCE people with similar paths; in his case music. Jackson wasn't a philanthropist, may not have talked too much about war, or even done much memorable outside of music but what he did for music was astounding. It's a shame his mental health was not always there because he is by far and away the greatest performer I have personally seen. I am still a young one and never saw Elvis or Lennon but he will be missed and we will remember how much he did for music and how he shaped pop for the rest of its existance.

fair enough to the first part. I agree with the Elvis comments as there is stuff he did that I didn't like either, but he helped main stream a revolution in music. I still fail to see how MJ accomplished that much. His cd was the top selling album ever, but every single off the album was even outsold by "macerena" and Bing Crosby singing christmas songs. Not entirely sure how that happens, but maybe as a full set the cd was good. Heck, "YMCA" beat them all out. But a man can stand as influential in ways that simply entertain without changing the world. So I can full heartedly concede that.

I appreciate your open mindedness on the topic. Im not even really a huge MJ fan but I run a bar and my DJ played only MJ tonight and everyone was fine with it and we were still slammed. The point is, he played over an hour of his music straight and I knew almost every word. When you line the hits up in a row its just baffling that you know so many that you didn't realize beforehand. And again I'm not a huge fan. It was impressive. I do love The Wiz though
Back to my quote, yes Bing Christmas outsold singles of most everyone. Old ladies will listen to Bing Crosby until they die (and some of use youngins as well) but that's why everyone and their brother make a Christmas Album. I don't want to look but I venture to say there are a few American Idol rejects with some. For some reason people will ALWAYS buy Christmas albums and I don't get it! They're not new songs!!! haha While I did bring up sales they obviously aren't a proof of quality when it comes to Mainstream music. His music takes me back to a time before Brittney and Justin, before President Bush, and when things we're simpler. His music was fun, sometimes meaningful (man in the mirror, black or white), but always classy. He didn't need to rip on people or curse to sell records (not that I care) but he was a wholesome pop star that, at the time, we could get behind. So for that I miss him.

haha. yea. christmas albums are the reject rares of music. like when Now that's what I call music did it... twice... seriously?? I did the same thing with the beatles lately. I watched that across the universe movie and couldn't believe how many of those songs I knew and never attributed to the beatles! never know until you do it I guess. haha. I can name some of MJ's big hits, and some I do like. Wasn't a fan of thriller (the song) but it gets sooo stuck in your head and you picture the dance and you know the words even if you fight it. like "sexy back". And you got a point that he didn't rip on anyone. That gives him some plus but I don't expect vegas to fill up with impersonators, neverland to become a mermorial, or movies to mimic him (fondly at least). As a person he's just... forgettable. His music can be played and remembered and thought fondly of and then you can forget it the next day completely. When it comes on the radio you'll be like "oh yea! this was a good song" and then procede to think the same thing about the next song and the one after that untily ou forget it again. I think the only song of his that I actively look for and listen to is smooth criminal cause it had a great tempo and sound.
... gotta go watch across the universe now... need a beatles fix.
In the past years MJ has been a tad weird, but I must say he can make a darn good album and have a massive fanbase. He's been a musican his whole life, and I pat him on the back for his career. I personally love Thriller,Who's Loving You, Smooth Criminal, Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough, Bad, Billie Jean, and Beat It.
Hopefully Michael Jackson will be remembered for his music, and not for all the other stuff. History has shown us that the legacy of great musicians will emphasise the music, and the bad incidents will be diminished (Elvis, Jim Morrison etc)
Elvis has never had the world wide fame Michael Jackson did. Michael Jackson had 3 number 1 hits at the age of 11. Not nearly the same thing.
What? Elvis is not as famous as MJ? Like do you know anything about music history? While MJ revolutionized Videos Elvis basicaly is credit with creating Rock & Roll. For every MJ impersonator there are porbably 4 or 5 Elvis ones. His estate made more money then MJ did last year. Elvis started in 30+ movies

While MJ was the King of Pop, Elvis was simply The King. I'm not trying to knock MJ down, just saying the Elvis was at least as big a phenomenon and most likely bigger.
Michael Jackson the musician was a sensation. Michael Jackson the man may or may not have been a monster, but the evidence against his character is controversial. I like the man regardless of this 20 year struggle of character assassination and I was really hoping that I would be able to meet him one day. I will settle for visiting his grave.
In related news, the plastic in Michael Jackson's face is going to be used to make Legos. This will allow kids to play with him for a change. (giggles)
I really hope, that if there is a heaven, Michael Jackson doesn't go there. Seriously-his music was ok and he definitely changed music, but he was a freaking child molester. If he gets into heaven, I pity all the poor little kids there.
We live in a country were ~50% of the populace believe public schooling is a socialist conspiracy and that being called Einstein is an insult. We could try and fix it, but unfortunately the other 50% don't believe in euthanasia.
There is no proof he was ever a child molester. I think it's pretty disgusting that his entire career got defamed because a bunch of money hungry parents wanted to grub in on his fortune.
The guy was pretty much insane because of his childhood and psychologists said he had reverted to a child like state mentally. This makes it obvious why he was hanging around with little kids a lot. I really don't think he ever did any harm to them, and that's why (if you remember) they were never able to prove anything in court.
Meanwhile these trumped up cases that had no evidence whatsoever to back them up overshadow all the millions of dollars he raised for charity and all of the other great things he did. It makes me sick to be honest.

Not to turn this into that can of worms, but you say this with such certainty based on what? I mean, if you can judge that a man doesn't deserve heaven, surely you know you're right with absolute positivity.
What makes me sick are the jerks coming out of the woodwork to mock Jackson's death or celebrate it because he was a 'freak' and a 'monster'. I've had severe words with many people lately over exactly that. One person told me that Michael Jackson was more evil than Charles Manson and deserved to burn in hell for eternity.
I'm not even a fan but that level of callous disrespect just pisses me off. There's speaking ill of the dead and then there's figuratively pissing on his grave while laughing at how right you are.

For what it's worth, I strongly second this. My musical tastes are strongly anti-pop; but MJ was a master of his genre. It is altogether fitting and proper to recognize the influence he had on music and culture. As for his troubled personal life, it takes a brash sort of person to cast him as a villain without acknowledging that he was also, in many respects, a victim: pushed into the spotlight as a child, his life became a phenomenon that ultimately grew beyond his ability to control or even (as I take it) to comprehend.

Indeed. And not to mention that his supposed villainy is still altogether unproven. Odd behavior and damning accusations do not translate into guilt absolutely. To level such judgment at him in the first place is misguided and downright disrespectful at this moment in time so near after his death.
It was sad enough to witness the circus his life became, it's heartbreaking to see that his death will suffer the same fate.

You do realize that after he was acquitted from the SECOND trial of being accused of child molestation, the jury admitted they made a mistake and should of sent him away. I'm to lazy to find the interview so look it up yourself. Anyways, I will mourn MJ's death with dignity. Despite his criminal record, he was one hell of an entertainer.
When he died, his personal physician was with him giving him CPR. Just before his death, he was training with that guy who plays "The Hulk" for his comeback tour. No doubt that physical exercise combined with his age, anorexia, and drug abuse is what sent him to his maker. I haven't looked online to see the results of the autopsy yet to forgive me if I'm wrong.
I grew up hearing his music. I was listening to Van Halen, ZZ Top, etc/etc...and my sister listened to MJ. So, long car rides usually consisted of every MJ album At a young age, he made some dam catchy tunes.
I felt sorry for the guy once I learned what his story was when he was growing up in that house his parents called a "home". Any child having to endure that much punishment, both physically and mentally is bound to have severe problems later in life.
I'm just glad that it didn't consume him at a young age, and that a lot of ppl were able to witness his solo career and enjoy all the music he put out there for the world.
It was sad enough to witness the circus his life became, it's heartbreaking to see that his death will suffer the same fate.
Heartbreaking? You've been watching too much Lifetime, We, and Oxygen.
He was a multi-millionaire and world famous. He had a great life and didn't even die that young. I'm sure all the rumors, controversy, and personal problems hurt him but he is gone now and our opinions can't hurt him anymore.
If there is some sort of tabloid hurricane that accuses him of horrible things, he isn't around to care about it anyway.
Don't cry for him; he doesn't need it even though his family might.

Yes, heartbreaking. Heartbreaking for Jackson's life that all his great contributions to our lives are being overshadowed even now after his death by the tabloid circus, ignorant judgments and indefensible mocking. He never had peace in life, not really, and it seems he can't even have it in death.
It's also heartbreaking for those who knew him personally for them to have to endure another round of "mock the freak". Imagine losing your brother, or father, or child and having to deal with people choosing the days after his death to rehash all the bad things they thought of him. All the decades-old accusations, all the hate, all the mocking. Now multiply that by the world.
Not to mention it's heartbreaking that now we as a culture care less about a man's death and the grief of his loved ones than we do about reveling in scandal and drama. Tabloid and celebrity culture seems so fun but right now it seems dirty and disgusting more than anything else.
Goodnight, sweet prince.
