So the IOC decided earlier today to award the 2016 Olympic Games to Rio, Brazil instead of Chicago, Tokio, and Madrid.
It will be the first time the games will ever be held not only in Brazil, but in all of South America, and only the second time they will be held in Latin America (after Mexico City 1968).
In my opinion this is going to prove invaluable to the sporting culture in the country. I think sports currently don't receive half the attention it needs to in Brazil as a tool of social development (aside from football/soccer, for the most part). Hopefully the Olympics (and the FIFA World Cup two years earlier) will not only help modernize the country's sporting infrastructure, but also the sporting culture as a whole.
I was really hoping they would choose Rio simply because of the reasons you provided.
I also didn't really want to see them be held in Chicago, which is kinda shocking as I'm from the US. I just feel there are much better cities in our country where they could hold them. (Never been a big fan of Chicago anyway)

Congratulations! Your country must be extremely excited. However I feel cheated that Chicago got knocked out so early considering it was supposed to win (at least that's what the American media has been saying, I have no idea how one can be the projected winner) and you are getting the 2014 World Cup. On a separate note, I hope America wins its bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. If not, I think we will have a problem...
We live in a country were ~50% of the populace believe public schooling is a socialist conspiracy and that being called Einstein is an insult. We could try and fix it, but unfortunately the other 50% don't believe in euthanasia.
Who cares if the US didn't get it. Sure we could use the jobs, but have you seen the distribution of wealth in Brazil? It is atrocious, even worse than in the US. They need this kick in the economic pants...
The largest World Cup (in terms of attendance) in the history of the World Cup was the one that took place in America.
Which is why I think we'll have another one in the States soon. Although I believe England should be a given for the 2018 edition... it's been a while since they last hosted it, and there's a big lobby campaign inside FIFA to bring the Cup back to the sport's country of origin. If I had to guess, I'd say we'll have England, Australia, and then USA as hosts after 2014.

Well I'm disappointed. Obama fails again I guess.
There's more to it than that. News reports around the world had it that the majority of IOC officials were all for bringing the Olympics back to the American continent, which made Rio and Chicago both favorites. However, for the first round, those very officials leaned slightly to Rio's side, while the remaining ones predictably cast their votes for Madrid and Tokyo - which is why Chicago got eliminated so early. Further proof of this is that, while Madrid was ranked #1 after a very close first round, Rio managed to win both the second and the third ones by a considerable margin.
Of course, speculation varies wildly about why the pro-America officials leaned towards Rio in the first place, but the main accepted reasons are the Brazilian economy's good response to the crisis (our currency has gained more value over the last two years than any other major economy in the world) and the fact that South America never hosted the Olympics before.
Either way, yes, the majority of the country is ecstatic right now.
Yea, congrats on getting the olympics hosted there. Im sure that all the competitors will love visting your fine country! America gets too much olympic love anyways, and besides Chicago is a ******** from what I have heard of it.

General speculation includes:
Obama telling people what growing up in Chicago for him was like, instead of telling them why Chicago deserves it.
Obama going to Copenhagen.
A brutal beating in a Chicago school.
Having the Olympics in South America for the first time trumps the first black president of the U.S.
I agree on the S.O. needs to return to the American continent, but it's kind of a shame that Chicago got eliminated first instead of last.
None the less Rio deserves every bit of it's win.

Tokyo would have been cool, too.

Unfortunately, I don't really foresee this happening since the US is not a big soccer country.
